The movie is portraying this time in Germany from the eyes of a child. So the way the whole movie so distinctly switches from being all whimsical and fun to suddenly turning dark and more serious the moment he finds his mother in the square makes sense. Up until that point in Jojo’s life he had never really been exposed to the horrors of it all, so everything was just seen and portrayed exactly like a child would see it, full of childlike wonder and whimsy. It’s a brilliantly told story.
@BigGator5

"Nothing makes sense anymore." "Yeah, I know, definitely not a good time to be a Nazi." Fun Fact: Mel Brooks praised the film in his speech at the AFI awards in January 2020: "I just saw Jojo Rabbit (2019), and it's really a terrific and eloquent and beautiful picture." Lost In Adaptation Fact: The film is based on Christine Leunens's novel Caging Skies (2008), a book that Waititi's mom loved before turning him onto it as well. "Imaginary Hitler" is an added element, although the rest of the story's main characters are adaptations of the book. Historical Fact: Despite not being a full-on war movie, all of the German equipment seen, both carried and vehicles, are genuine German gear. No mocked-up non-German vehicles are used ever during the film. Taika Waititi discovered in his research that WWII Germany was very vibrant and fashionable and was interested in shying away from traditional war films showing it as dreary and dark, instead presenting the town as a seemingly celebratory place and dressing characters as stylishly as possible. He liked the idea that everything seems happy, but just underneath the surface "the third Reich is crumbling, and, you know, the dream is over."

This is one of my favorite movies. Captain K is an amazing character. Jojo imagination of Hitler is the best. On a more serious note, notice how Captain K rushed into the house just in time to save Jojo and Elsa, then he saves Jojo at the end. What an amazing movie. War movies don't always need an R rating to get their point across. Being able to reach a wider and younger audience, this film shows kids how to think for themselves, and to not just assume that what you're told and what is going on around you is true or right.

The mother said she never looked a tiger in the eye, but that's not true in my eyes. She had the guts to stand up to the Nazi regime and tried to help people. Gestapo were the official secret police of Nazi Germany. So they got wind that there might be a person hiding out in the house, so they came to tear it apart. Captain K brought his mom's bike over, either because he saw her bike and she wasn't with it, or he actually already saw her hanging and came to protect Jojo and the girl. He was in the same boat, because he was obviously gay and was basically in fear for his own life too.
@previouslyachimp
@previouslyachimp Ай бұрын
I believe the statement is partially incorrect. It's unlikely that the Gestapo thought she was hiding someone; rather, they likely saw her placing the resistance notes on the bench. The symbolism of the houses with 'eyes' when the mother is hanged suggests that people are watching, which, of course, they were. It was common for neighbors to report on each other. Additionally, it's not the mother's bike that Captain K brings. Perhaps he just knew about the mother's capture or death and wanted to be there to help Jojo.

Great reaction like always! Love this movie, the film is based on Leunens' 2004 novel Caging Skies, it's fair to say that Waititi took creative liberties when developing Jojo Rabbit. For instance, an imaginary Hitler does not make an appearance in the book. Waititi who ultimately went on to play Hitler, came up with the idea himself. Waititi said that he had no interest in accurately portraying Hitler, saying "Screw This Guy" One of my favourite scenes is when the Gestapo officers (led by Stephen Merchant) searching Jojo's home. However, the scene is also hilarious with the Gestapo doing little more than greeting one another with the "Heil Hitler" salute which is made 31 times in the scene. And in a interview Waititi told that he thought this would not only be a funny moment but also work to highlight how childish and silly the Nazi Party was. Seeing these grown men who claim to be members of a master race do their dumb greeting over and over just makes them look like a bunch of idiots. Along with being a movie about this period in time, Waititi also had a more intimate and personal influence on the film. He explained that the film is a love letter to single parents, like his own mother, who do all they can to protect their children. Keep up the good work.

You are thinking of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." No...not at all like that. That is a comedy. This is a comedy that slips into much deeper depths. Perfectly acted. No it is not an accurate portrayal of WW II. But it does get the feeling of it very right. It is just details that are not right. That said, it also got a lot of technical details VERY correct. Like the Panzerfaust and the Panzerschreck.

It's an absolute masterpiece of a movie imo. Didnt expect that much of it when I first heard of it but it absolutely blew me away. Id probably at a push call it a 'comedic/satirical drama' as its not REALLY just a straight up comedy but its essentially poking fun at the absolute lunacy that was Nazi Germany (and somehow manages to do so without feeling like its making light or belittling some really REALLY serious and heavy historical events. Wonderful film and frankly Career best performances from everyone involved (including Sam Rockwell and Scarlet Johansen and thats saying alot considering both of their extensive filmographies!). Oh as to whether its based on historical events... not any SPECIFIC one but pretty much everything depicted did happen (not SPECIFICALY with those characters etc but all the things depicted are historically accurate for the most part (the absolutely insane propoganda and myths they brainwashed kids (and adults) into believing about the Jews, the level of fanaticism people got swept up in, the folks trying to make a difference where they could and often at giving their lives for that and folks within the system trying to make a differnece too, and Germany's increasingly desperate efforts with regards to putting kids and old men with anything they could cobble together as equipment on the front line as the war ran on and they got backed into a corner. It's all pretty much accurate albeit played up for dramatic/comic effect.

I don't think it was an abrupt shift. There were hints almost from the beginning that it was going to turn dark. I feel like you both missed that the reason capt.K helped jojo and the Elsa,was because he and his partner were gay lovers, so they too had something to hide,that could get them killed. One of the most brilliant movies and deserved Oscars for sure, sadly that didn’t happen.

What I think is amazing about this film is how it explores the dogmatism of the Germans that chose become Nazis out of blind loyalty. JoJo, being a young kid was easily influenced, goes through the journey of realizing the flaw in that dogmatism and how his mother was raising him not only to do what was right, but to learn to do it for when she’s no longer with him. I also love how you watch the connection between him and Elsa and how they grow from being two estranged children with different cultural backgrounds to not only friends but to a brother-sister relationship. Also there’s an implication that Captain K and Freddy, his second in command, were lovers; they had to keep it secret, because it was forbidden to be LGBTQ+ in those days. Men that were queer would be branded with a pink triangle that represented their homosexuality. 👦🏼🐇❤️🤍🖤

And how really kids just wanted to fit in 8:42 like here, how Jojo is peer pressured to be like everyone else. None of them liked it. Yet kids seek validation and approval from others around them especially those older and seem ‘cooler’ Jojo friend even said he didn’t see all the fuss about Jews when he actually saw them. Because most boys were still toddlers in the early-mid 30s when those riots and rounding up was happening.

But when you see him fighting towards the end both of them are wearing the pink triangle ( which was placed on homosexuel nazis as hated by nazis) both showing how even they can still be strong. I love how when his mother is killed he finds ways to take care of jojo and his " sister" saving their lives and his final act alive is to save jojo again. If dont know Taika is jewish himself ,he did absolutely no research on hitler he said he didnt deserve that respect but also its jojos imagination that has created this hitler anyway.
