I once saw a comment that referred to Commodore Norrington as a Jane Austen hero stuck in the wrong story and I've never been able to watch these movies without constantly thinking about it since.
@4tr0phy
@4tr0phy Ай бұрын
He's such an interesting and nuanced character when contrasted with the caricatures and plot serving hollow shells he has to contend with. Jack and Barbossa are larger than life while Elizabeth and Will give great performances but have no real character to speak of. They're scheming and conniving pirates when it suits the plot, goofy clowns when it suits the plot, loyal and good upstanding citizens when it suits the plot. Norrington on the other hand demonstrates real, consistent, and genuinely moving character growth. It speaks volumes that, to me, the intended emotional moment of Will's line: "It's right here: between you and Jack" feels corny and unearned compared to Norrington's "I think we can afford to give him one day's head start." Even in the midst of his heartbreak and essentially being made the fool of to add insult to injury, he still has grown enough to see the right thing to do here and doesn't abuse his station to act out of anger or to get revenge. I believe these movies, especially the first, would be, pardon the phrasing, completely lost at sea without his grounding presence, and the contrast makes Jack's slapstick buffoonery all the more enjoyable.

As dark as this movie seems to get, Maple, remember one very important detail. It's a Disney movie. It will NEVER get higher than PG-13. The closest Disney ever got tona more adult rating was This and Gargoyles. And of course NOW there's MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine that's Rated R. But Gargoyles was definitely the first Disney project that was intended for teen viewers and not children.

Cheers guys!

35:20. I love this line. Because it would be an incredibly sailor/piratey thing to say because of maps back then. Often on maps you'll see the (mythical) sea screatures reported to be in these waters. The actual phrase "here be dragons" refers to this practice of either placing these purported creatures where they are said to be from or by placing/bordering the known/uncharted lands/waters with pictures of dragons. Basically the medieval equivilent of caution/warning/unknown dangers ahead signage.

The 2nd Disney theme park attraction to become a film following The Country Bears (2001). 1 of 2 Disney films based on theme park attractions released in 2003, the other was The 'first' Haunted Mansion. 1 of 2 films in the same year that starred Johnny Depp. I never would've thought myself that something that was a ride could be a film. Pirates on film in any form, even in tone could be fun and adventurous as they should be. The direction, writing, scope, scale and then some to most people reinvented the summer blockbuster. The cast all around is great. Almost every kind of character you would expect in a genre like this. But Johnny Depp, an actor's actor is incomparable with CJS as his biggest role and in the biggest film of his career at the moment, winning several awards plus an first-ever Oscar nomination for his performance. Please continue on with the 4 sequels. They're lengthy films, but all are still exciting to watch.

I have been wearing one every day since. Once I was on my own I can still count on any of them to come over to my house to tighten it if there is no other man around! If I have to I can use my makeshift method of hooking the laces on a doorknob and moving forward BUT that doesn't compare with a strong man making the laces as tight as possible! 😉😉👱‍♀👱‍♀👗👗👠👠❤❤

Something tells me she isn't cultured in theater. It's a show. Be entertained. This isn't' a universe where everything is100% realistic. Skeletons with a sheet bouncing her in the air, or the guy who fell into the dock hole, or the guy who swung on the rope to The Interceptor and was way off... are all theatrical embellishments. Think of this as more a theater production rather than a super-serious realistic interpretation of magical cursed pirates.
