That's what growing up in a messed up environment where you are also the one who brings home the bacon will do to a person. You have formed attachment relationships with the adult caregivers in your life, and it has a formative influence. Kids don't discern between good and bad influences, their life is "normal" to them. JoJo has grown up with the understanding that these people are her support, her friends, her peers, mentors, parent-figures. If she has nothing healthy to compare it to, all her toxic relationships are going to seem fine to her. It can take years, and needs mental distance, to realise that in the end, you were controlled and manouvred by people you were supposed to be able to trust. JoJo's sense of identity must be so warped.
