What made it successful was the branding. It was about the most popular and iconic villain in comic book history, and it was his origin story to boot. The film qua film is only good on a superficial level.

Rule of modern cinema,.If the critics hate it then it probably is something worth watching. If they love it, it meets their ideological approval so will suck, avoid. If it gets mixed reaction, then it is somewhere in the middle so don't expect anything great.

The musical elements may make sense given the character suffered from delusions of a distinctly theatrical nature. That will be a thin line to walk however.

It clearly is that just from the trailers. They (or one of them) imagines themselves hosting a Sonny and Cher type show, like Arthur imagined being a comedian on the talk show in the first one. She probably brings more of the musical side to the insanity while he is still more comedic, like Sonny. That's why it is the madness of two, they combine their insanity.

I was looking forward to this, but then I read what apparently happens at the end. I won't spoil it, but it's too close to a "modern audience" ending for me, elevating a certain character over another. It could depend on how it is played out, but I can't imagine liking it. Although, someone who hasn't seen the movie had an interesting take on how it could play out if they play the one character a certain way. Then it could actually be a commentary for the opposite view.

First, they'll give a standing ovation to anything in Venice. Secondly, the movie is a 2 hour musical where Lady Gaga plays Lee Quinn (because the name Harley Quinn is too goofy apparently) who kills the Joker by setting off a bomb at the end of the movie and escapes. No thanks, hard pass for me.

Gaga is not Harley Quinn. Why was she even chosen for that particular role? Singer or not, she doesn't fit the Harley character everyone knows and loves. Sure, it's fine to do something different, but there is a large fandom for Harley and when you put someone else into the role that doesn't look or act like what everyone expects, it's not going to be taken very kindly by most, even if the actor is good. Joaquin did a passable Joker that could basically be a variant of the character from the comics, but Gaga is too far removed from how Harley should be visually. Granted, like everyone, I haven't seen her performance, but age and physical appearance, Harley she is not IMO.

Guys, I think the reason why Joker was so successful with audiences is b/c it was an origin movie on the Joker. But, the shine of the Joker is a whole lot less shiny w/o Batman. Audiences are intrigued with the good vs evil conflict and contrast btw Batman and the Joker. I don't think we have a large segment of the audience who are interested in psychoanalyzing the Joker just to determine if he is really evil or his romance with Harley Quinn! And, we really not going to see a movie to listen to the Joker singing! The bottomline is the battles between Batman and the Joker. It is hard enough these days to make lightning strike twice and try to duplicate the success of a billion dollar movie. But, these people are making their degree of difficulty much more difficult than necessary! This is how they end up destroying a franchise. They waste time and money on projects that will end up making them lose so much money that they can't move forward with projects that will be profitable and help them build upon the next film! It is not rocket science!
