Everybody loved Billy Dee from the word "go". Their claims fall apart there already. The only racism in Hollywood was its business practices. They don't get to cry foul decades later. They crafted an exclusionary environment and their casting directors set the boundaries for who to cast when and why, based on mandates from their studio heads, who were reacting solely to what they, themselves, believed would harm the industry. It has nothing to do with individual people, who were likely always far more tolerant of each other than history gives them credit. That's the big takeaway from this.

MauLer notes that the guards don't really have an ending, but I think he misunderstood something. Those guards were not traditional antagonists. The audience is supposed to have extreme contempt for Arthur, so much that they cheer on everything bad that happens to him. The audience is supposed to be rooting for the guards, not hate them. That's why they function the way they do in the story.

One of the greatest things about the H. Ledger Joker in TDK is: we don't know anything about him. He just appears one day in Gotham and starts spreading mayhem. Why? Because he thinks it's fun. We don't find out, that he was some abused victim who now wants revenge on society yada yada.... In fact, by the end of the movie, we don't know jack about him. Sure, there are various fan theories, I like the one that states that he's some former Black Ops operative who got ''burned'' by his agency and went nuts, but the movie never confirms anything. Christopher & Jonathan Nolan leave it up to you, to get your own theories. Same with the original Alien movie & the Xenomorph species. We didn't know jack about where these creatures came from and that made them scarier, now Ridley Scott turned them into some science experiment of a crazy android.

I always found the very first episode the Borg showed up in TNG was their best. The crew were completely unprepared for the encounter, and the Borg were such a threat that the only thing the Enterprise could do was run away, and when even that didn't work Picard practically had to beg Q for help. Similar to the Xenomorphs we became far too familiar with them in subsequent appearances and they lost all mystery/danger.

@@sloths-df3gfvery different. One is an established event in which two main characters of the OT, Obi-Wan and Anakin, are stated to have served together in, clearly establishing a line towards an expansion of lore. The other is an enigmatic character who's meant to embody chaos and has purposely never been assigned any officially acknowledged backstory by the creator in order to maintain intrigue and play into the nature of the character. One is open-ended, and leads to a predictable continuation/exploration of existing characters, the other, being the creation of a Joker origin, fundamentally changes an established aspect of the character and damages the mystique. I don't think anyone complains about the prequels conceptually, it's all that unbridled George which harms the end product.

As far as 'turning in character essay'... First off, was Jodie the one in charge on the Acolyte? Why the hell would Amandala hand HER the essay about her characters? Secondly: Alfonso Cuarron famously asked the three lead actors in Prisoner of Azkaban to do essays on their characters and their motivations. Unsurprisingly, Emma turned in a fucking book, Daniel did about a half hearted paper, and Rupert (the smartest of them) didn't even bother doing it.

@117Ender
@117Ender Ай бұрын
@samwallaceart288 which makes no sense. The best way to continue the story. Arthur post movie 1, is getting psych evaluation and while lucid he says you wouldn't get it. He gets drugged, it causes him pain to acknowledge his actions. He struggles with dealing both psyches. His followers decide to break him out. He doesn't want to. He gets punished cause society thinks he's the mastermind and easier to pin him as the kingpin for his followers. He pleads innocence, gets denied, goes into solitary. He snaps refuses his meds, and gets self radicalized talking to the Joker. When released from solitary, he has accepted to be Joker, with a plan to escape. in the 1st movie he becomes the Joker due to suffering pain its not a logical acceptance, this means he becomes the Joker with agency instead of just out fear or anger. Thus completing his transformation to accept who he is with agency instead of being stuck with regrets. It continues the main idea of society beating down on the little guy. It has Arthur realize while his dream was to bring smiles to his fans, his fans only care about him since he's an avatar of their rage. The dream he wants he can't have, so he has to accept and become the Joker, bit atleast does it in his way. The ending credits scene is him causing terror all over Gotham. By going back to his origin on a TV show but this time taking the audience and crew hostage. The first movie is what happens to society that beats down the down trodden. The 2nd is him accepting his new self due to realizing his origin dream is different. Thus creating a larger than life character. HQ, could play the role of a chick who is lost in between, she is a doctor who wants to cure insanity but his insanity convinces her that maybe he's the sanest one around. She organizes the break out, she swaps his meds for placebos. She wants to experience the insanity.

@@ArianTjr77 I quite liked the point it was making: Given the choice between "weak, victim Arthur" and "big bully Joker", Arthur realizes he's _neither,_ he's brave and honest and willing to accept the consequences of his actions, not because it's a joke or an excuse, but because he's a man. Tragically, someone else embodying his Joker ego doesn't take the rejection well, and his own persona knifes him before society can finish the job. The whole thing's a cautionary tale about the danger of personas. Arthur could've been a strong good man _without_ relying on a fake personality. But he figured that out too late.

No one thought either Arthur or Joel were morally good people, but what they did think was that they were interesting, well acted characters whose struggles we could empathize with because of the environments around them. The fact that both sequels not only answer the ambiguous questions of their predecessors but deconstruct and kill off their central protagonists in an underwhelming fashion shows that Neil Druckmann and Todd Phillips don't understand there own works. Both come off as apologies for the first instalments and desperate pleas to be accepted into the Hollywood social circle. It's just lame af. at the end of the 1st movie, its him off his meds, and out of therapy, the last scene is him in a ward lets say not drugged up. so you could continue the story of him in the mental insitution, going to trial, but now drugged up. him being medicated and now having to confront his actions in a trial, causes him to mentally break down, he becomes weak, he becomes lame etc. as the trial continues, you have the clown mask posse, try to break him out, him being medicated he doesnt go, and the escape ends in failure, society aka courts blame him, and add it on to him cause they think hes the kingpin of the clowns. so now hes in solitary, and he starts going crazy, he speaks with joker, he goes crazy. once hes out of solitary, and etc hes plans to escape he starts a riot. what actually happens is, that HQ, is his therapist, she feels attracted to pre drugged joker, that his sanity is something that makes him fun to her, interesting makes, she decides to be become part of the clowns, but a secret to keep her job to free Arthur, its when hes drugged up that she wants the joker back, she has fallen in love with said insanity, she helped plan the escape, she swaps his pills with placebos, to have him become the joker. so behind the scenes shes giving him one little push, to have him go over the edge so her joker can come back. she feels that the medication is dulling him and wants the insanity. so you could write him lame and boring, but its explained with him being drugged up, it also causes him to realize he has 2 psyches, arthur and joker, it causes him to no longer lash out at society as a spur of the moment, in anger and rage, but as goal, cause in the 1st movie, arthur, barely has agency, he acts out as the joker, when emotional, thats kinda half in half out, he hasnt accepted it fully, he hasnt decided he is the joker, he has just acted out like a child, you can call that he created a new psyche, but hasnt accepted it fully and willing to become it, thats why with the 2nd movie, you can get him to accept who he has become and now do it without regrets. arthur originated wanted to make ppl laugh and smile, hes just a failed comedian, he gets abused and snaps, and starts becoming the joker, but he doesnt give up on his dream, thus him in jail, having a trial surrounded by press and etc having an audience that loathes him, while also having the clowns the audience that loves him but not for what he wanted, and he has to come to terms accept that and thus the 2nd movie could finish this transformation, that that the end of the movie hes out, hes free, hes now unburdened can enjoy gotham. which could lead to the 3rd movie of how society handles with this. how does society manage to give birth and complete the transformation of him becoming a villian, its a fascinating story of how society plays a role, but also arthur who has no agency he has hopes and dreams and how the 1st movie breaks the hopes, he still has dreams but has to accept it wont be how he wanted, the ending scene of the 2nd movie, would have been him, taking a news studio or late night comedy show hostage, and this time its not him taking it out on elites but all of society, and giving a powerful message thats put on the airwaves. that doesnt just shock the city like he did with murray but shocks the nation and world. making him become a larger than life figure, and finishing the movie with a quote that states that this time the punchline will be society to suffer. which would be interesting.

@jackmesrel4933 its literally based on the 1st movie but moving the story forward, we are introduced to Arthur being told he's meds and his therapist are being cut. Then its just bad break by society, by peers and his boss, etc. Very few are his own mistakes, like the gun falling out at the hospital. He could have had it in the bag. So its 70% society falling apart, 30% him being dumb. The only time he commits violence is when he's pushed into a corner its never him seeking it. The ending shows he's become the Joker, but it feels like accidentally, he didn't plan the riots etc so it would be reasonable that being back on meds is a step backwards, the trial would be a version of his dream but twisted. His followers the same way. Its him having to accept said twist and poisoned dream. Its kinda rehashing Joker 1 but, it's also reasonable, he's in jail/mental institution, he needs a trial, he would be medicated and etc. The city had city wide riots, it would make the ppl in charge want to bring order and peace and become more authoritarian. Regular ppl would accept that, the ppl suffering feel unhead, Joker the leader but lacks a goal or plan. He hasn't taken control to exert his influence. I'd assume it would be boring its more dialogue heavy and drama. Some ppl wouldn't like it. But it would fit the theme, and be reasonable to move the story forward. The 3rd movie is the chaos

It was heartbreaking when Prison Guard charged up his atomic heat-ray and Joker said this is just like last time, guard fired and the blast wave was rushing back, Harley pushed Joker into the safety of an alley as Harley was blasted away in the blast wave. Then Joker feel to his knees acknowledging Harley is gone than slowly turned to see the prison guard there then he roared super loud and started walking away. After despair, Joker gives this scream of a broken man who has nothing but shame, dishonor and loss.

@zibilacoste5

Why watch the Wire then? If he cannot pause at every sentence and talk how idiotic it is? Why praise ''Succession' when you can clown 'Ant-Man'? I like Mauler, he's insightful fellow but come on, his brand is putting mediocre or bad movies under a magnifying glass & making fun of them. Besides, the fact that he haven't watched the Wire yet is pretty telling for a film critic.
@samwallaceart288
@samwallaceart288 Ай бұрын
@@zibilacoste5 They've done full episodes gushing about stuff like _Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Andor, Everything Everywhere All at Once, A Haunting in Venice,_ etc,. And that's not even touching on hours of Lord of the Rings praise, praise videos on MauLer's main, discussions on Open Bar et al., and at least a third of EFAP Movies being reactions to movies they actually enjoy like Mask of Zorro. Even just focusing on the negative reviews, MauLer will directly compare a bad scene with a another scene that tackles the same challenge but better e.g. comparing a dream episode in Ahsoka to dream episodes in Buffy and Futurama to point out how time and character dynamics can absolutely be used effectively even in heady abstract scenarios. MauLer likes lots of things, is what I'm saying. He just spends too much time watching current topical stuff and doesn't know where to start when it comes to catching up on classics. Drinker getting him to watch original Star Trek is progress.

@zibilacoste5 Ай бұрын
@@samwallaceart288 There is a lot of stuff he likes, the stuff he doesn't like he holds to impossible standards though. I've seen EFAP 9hr coverage of Jackson's trilogy. While it was fun they had very little to say about the faults of those movies, the bias is obvious since these are the films of their childhood & that formula can in general be successfully applied elsewhere, so it is difficult to treat his reviews seriously. Such approach just doesn't work. You cannot simultaneously offer the least favourable interpretation of Disney products you don't like, question every choice & break down every shot looking for flaws while praising the Original Trilogy or movies like 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' as cinema classics & reference points. It doesn't work because if you do then you have to acknowledge that the entire plot of the original Star Wars happens because an Imperial officer is an idiot since he refuses to destroy an escape pod containing Death Star plans & if characters act like idiots then it is a sign of that mythical 'bad writing'. Also, there is a complete tonal dissonance in the scene during the shootout between Stormtroopers & Rebels, we see characters on both sides dying while 3P0 & R2 are casually strolling across the corridor. Is that 'Marvel humour'? Etc. Why is Indiana Jones wearing a leather jacket in the middle of the jungle? What's the point of all these traps? It's the beginning of the film, we know he's not going to die & why is that door closing so slowly? We learn nothing from that action about Indy other than he's extremely lucky, etc. In his coverage of Andor, did he mention that Luthen's ship invalidates the point of tractor beams in the OT? Or he liked the series too much to acknowledge that? (: Also, being negative is his brand, that's what he's known for. Of his top 10 videos on the main channel 9 are negative, 1 is positive (out of top 20 only 1 is positive, lol). He is regular on Open Bar & Real BBC, podcasts that keep repeating the same points almost every week - Star Wars is Dead, Marvel is Ruined, Disney is Doomed, etc. 'Penguin' seems like a series he would enjoy & he already said they won't cover it, but Acolyte? Episodic breakdown every week on Open Bar, Real BBC & EFAP TV. He'd make hours long streams on Zack Snyder's movies which are basically music videos, seek out summer popcorn flicks like Deadpool 3, lament on the state of modern media, say he has a busy schedule & not know the classics like 'The Wire'. Disappointing, not surprising. Nonetheless, when he enjoys something he's capable of providing an actual insight compared to some of his friends like Nerdrotic or Critical Drinker, who have become more political commentators than media reviewers & who perfected the skill of throwing around algorithmic buzzwords.

I thought it would have been great to show the Joker in Prison delving deeper into the psychotic side of his personality, being surrounded by the worst of the worst, and losing faith in his own humanity. Maybe some message around how the prison system doesn’t work for all people with mental illnesses. Then turning that towards Harley who works there as a consultant or something as he tries to corrupt her, eventually leading to a bloody rampage where he kills all the guards and escapes with her help. There was so much potential to tell a gritty prison based story with characters instead of this pretentious musical BS…

It's a shame but Garry can be right about WB - it may be the dumbest studio in modern Hollywood and that's saying a lot... Not only they dropped a ball with LOTR anniversary, they could have something unique with their DC villains movies/series. This could prove to general public that comic book adaptations can be something more than superhero films and can provide different and more mature than MCU slop. Batman's rogue gallery could provide material for a lot such project - imagine series about origin of Two-Face and his decent into insanity or even about psychological horror about Scarecrow, perfect for October ! But what I most I would want to see is "Luthor" - Superman story seen from Lex's perspective ; story in which Superman is genuinely a good guy but Luthor sees him trough Dark Forest hypothesis in which aliens is not to be trusted... But with calamity that is Joker 2, WB practically killed those perspectives. It's hard to believe that they dropped ball so hard with this sequel... WB should sue Todd Phillips or at least blacklist him ! 😂

Az is correct about Netflix being very selective with docos. I havent seen the Menendez Brothers doco, becuz I've seen enough content on their case, plus their trials (they got 2 back during the 90s) that I know enough from clips from Netflix that they have been highly selective in framing it in a way thats not accurate to facts of the Menendez Bros case. I expected them to be more accurate given the info available about them but they didn't. I thought they'd play to their popularity of their increasing support on socmedia gen z crowd, but they totally messed up the details on those clips I did see on their Netflix doco. Unbelievable. Goes to show they opt for empty Hollywood style over truth of the critical stuff that happened in that case.

I think penguin sometimes reminds me of the stranger things formula. It takes inspiration, or flat out steals from 80s horror you love. Penguin seems to take some of the best of the dynamics that we wanted between characters. Ep1. Sopranos Ep2. Breaking bad Ep3. 48 hours Which may explain why people compare it so much to those Shows. But , if penguins gonna steal, he’s gonna steal from the best. And he don’t regret all he has. Neither do I.

I sympathise with your rodent problem Gary. Many (40+) years ago I was sharing a hovel a mile outside Aberdeen with several other members of a motorcycle club. We didn’t have hot and cold running water (no hot anyway) but we did have hot and cold running mice, lots of them. We didn’t care much about the footprints in the frying pan, or the little presents the meeces left there. I drew the line however, when I woke up with the impression that something had touched me. When I put my hand to my head and found a small bloodstain I decided that enough was enough. Little bastard bit me while I was sleeping! So we got a cat, a kitten really, to deal with the problem. That’s when I learned I was deathly allergic to cats, so the cat had to go (probably to a good home, but I really don’t remember). We used mousetraps, unpleasant but effective.
