the issue I have with that argument is that it has no place in certain films. Namely films with a budgets in excess of 100 million that need widespread appeal in order to turn a profit. If the average filmgoer doesn't understand your film, and you need the average film goer to want to see your film, then you have a bad film. If it costs 2 million, you can make it all kinds of cryptic you want, nobody cares because nobody was going to see it beyond art students, professional critics, and pandering morons anyway.

Warner had Dune 2 and Godzilla Kong earlier in the year, so I don't think they are worried overall. Win some lose some. Joaquin got a massive paycheck, he doesn't care either. It's just gonna make Todd Philips find large scale work more difficult. Gaga's music to acting trajectory was already following Madonna's, so no surprises there also. In an localized industry already bereft of originality I think the financial outcome is not unexpected , but maybe the critical punch will hurt more.

I watched the movie and would not say it is that bad, maybe because I was not to invested? Emacipation of Harly Quinn was way worse. Sure after half the movie I was annoyed by the songs and the manipulation of Jocker was very basic and lame, also the end was very rushed, but at least it was not boring, or had awful dialogs (like boys season 4) for me a solid 60%. I have no Issues having it running in the backgroud when playing cards with friends

It's not about the movie being a musical (thought it certainly didn't help matters), but that the movie outright insults the fanbase. The whole point of the first movie was seeing how Arthur Fleck, a broken, desperate but well-meaning guy would end up becoming te Joker, a chaotic figure who not only revels in the anarchy he causes but, in the end, it gives him the appreciation he never had, thus accepting he's more loved as the Joker than he ever was as Fleck. Then the sequel turns it on its head by making him want to be Arthur Fleck again and, even worse, admonishes the audience for loving "the Joker" more than "Arthur Fleck" (even if the whole point was to see Joker's origins story, after all). Meaning: they used the sequel to deliver a "take that audience" and the audience rightfully reacted to that.

This movie was so UTR I wasn't sure it was out yet. The Studios have a bad habit of immediately pushing for a sequel when a movie or TV show has huge success. Todd Bridges seems to have a habit of sabotaging his own work; he didn't want to do a Hangover 3 so the general belief is that he deliberately tanked it so no one would ask for any more Hangover movies.
