I think it made more sense with the two Alice movies though. Burton's Alice in Wonderland was generally not received that well. It was a pretty bad film that got a big box office because of marketing and anticipation. People didn't care to see a second. I think you could make the case that the two other superhero films you mention were much the same: mediocre-to-bad films that didn't leave people wanting more. Joker, on the other hand, was well-received. I didn't care for it much but a lot of people did so Joker 2 doing so poorly seems like a new thing to me. The brands have been killed but a pattern of bad storytelling because studios think they can coast once a brand is built.

There are so many saying the movie is terrible because of the ending, claiming he doesn’t become who they thought he would. No one saw him for who he was, and most of the audience didn’t either. That’s the whole point. Arthur struggled with mental illness, yet many still refuse to see him for who he truly was. Just like with Harley, the haters support seems conditional, because he didn’t meet their expectations, they threw him away like garbage. He never became the Joker they all wanted him to be. And you know what happens to people who treat others like trash? They get what they deserve! They end up with a trash movie!

It's frustrating. This sequel has powerful moments, especially in the courtroom, when focusing on alternate perspectives impacted by Arthur's actions. The biggest issue with this story is the pacing. While most musicals use their songs to advance the story, these numbers often distract or overexplain Arthur's emotions due to their redundancy with non-musical equivalents rather than enhancing them for the audience.

According to Deadline at least $50m of the reported $190m production budget went to the Phillips, Phoenix & Gaga trio! Phillips was also given Final Cut on the movie cos of the roughly $2.5bn the first movie & the Hangover movies grossed worldwide plus they did ZERO audience testing of the movie! That budget on a relatively grounded comic-book movie with substantially less VFX shots & locations than a standard blockbuster makes no sense at all as a reasonable increase from the first movie's $55-70m budget to $80-100m MAX would've made more sense.

I disagree , even without all those factors, Joker was still a great movie with many underlying social commentary in it. In shorts it get the success it deserved.
@PhoenixPhire22Ай бұрын
I disagree… Joker was a great movie on its own and audiences loved it. I was excited for 2 even after knowing it would be a musical because I trusted the director. I thought a musical was an odd choice but maybe it just has a couple songs in it. Plus I was looking forward to Gaga as Harley. The trailers looked great. Word of mouth killed this one, I’m not even gonna bother checking it out because the reaction has been so negative by people I trust… most said they wished they had not watched it as it tainted the original. I liked the original so I’d rather just have that and not have it tainted.

I think it worked because it was made during a time period where most movies looked like generic marvel movies and it had a different tale then what we had been seeing for the last several years. I think Joker 2 failed because they didn't like the fact that the critics said it was a controversial movie about right wingers and bent over backwards to say "okay, well make sure to make joker in this one pathetic and not have any moments of agency in his whole life". Because the director didn't understand his own movie.

@@roujin518 Which braindead critics think a movie about eating the affluent and dissing the lack of funding for public service like mental health is about right wingers? Sounds like they slam the movie without even watching it .

I feel like this is a case where having studio meddling and producers in sunglasses making suggestions would've actually HELPED this movie. They would've wanted something more crowd-pleasing, more action-oriented and something that would appeal more to the fans of the first movie.

I don't do spoiler reviews so I havent had anything about Joker itself ruined. I look forward to seeing it when I can to form my own opinions on the movie but I am slightly scared to spend money on seeing it in thesters haha! Jokes aside, I look forward to seeing the experience.

I cannot stand this movie's pretentious, unnecessary subtitle. Why can't modern sequels just use numbers?
@JohnJacobSchmidttАй бұрын
Is a pretentious movie all together, even the first one? In my opinion, the audacity to take a character and place those characteristics onto an original character that you have created yourself. That's like having a movie called Batman and then it's just some guy named John Smith running around in a bat suit but really he's not the Batman but he calls himself the Batman. And he acts like the bad man but he really isn't the Batman. And then that movie gets such high a claim, where if someone doesn't know the character is going to think that is the Batman.

Because someone did some market testing once and got feedback that people don't want to watch Deuce Biggalow 4 without watching the first three.
@Fernando_616Ай бұрын
The subtitle only seems pretentious because it has no meaning to you prior to the film. That subtitle is actually really good for what happens in the movie and potentially genius if it had other implications I believe it may have had after seeing the movie

27:15 Look Back is a beautiful and poignant movie. I recommend it. The author created this manga to deal with the sadness and pain caused by the the terrible losses of the Kyoto Animation studios, which were destroyed by an madman arsonist in 2019. Although neither the manga nor the movie are about this fire, since it’s an allegory, you can still feel the loss and sadness that the author felt because of such senseless action.

Joker 2 made me appreciate Nolan as a DC director. The guy still had artistic flair but never seemed to look down on the comic book audience. I don’t think Nolan ever EMBRACED the comic book fandom, but he still respected his viewers. Todd Phillips Joker 2 felt like a movie by a director who thought he was better than his audience and it felt like he even despised them. So odd. I’m an adult Tim. I can enjoy a story about a crazy dangerous character without wanting to become one myself. We didn’t need you to “save us” from ourselves.

Joker 2 will fascinate for such a long time to come. I loved the first one and actually majority of in-person interactions about the film has also been about how much people liked it. What also stood out for me is that along my own perception, what we always talked about when it came to the film was how it was this examination of what could give birth to this fundamentally empty force of destruction and how great it was that the film made it clear that there was nothing admirable in Arthur. Yet when making the sequel, Phillips not only decided to make a response film, but he chose his target audience to be the people who didn't like the first film or were vocal in admiring Joker. And in the process made a film that just... Completely goes against the thing that made the first film a success? I guess to prove the critics wrong? Like what the actual hell?
@ralfschulz.Ай бұрын
If I wanted to watch a musical, I’d go to a theater, not the movies. We could've saved the time and money-this was hands down the worst sequel ever. I fell asleep multiple times, and now I know for sure: Lady Gaga isn’t just a bad singer, she's a terrible actress too. The best part of the film? When Joker told Gaga to stop singing.

Dunno if Dan mentions it, but the first movie only had a B+ Cinemascore. And on a similar note, people are likening new Joker movie to The Last Jedi. Here’s the thing: that movie had an A Cinemascore. The MARKETING for the movie was too vague to deceive anyone!
