The fault is absolutely on Warner for giving Joker 2 a $190 mio budget. That is so unnecessary for a movie like this. You could have easily made it with a budget close to the original one's. Hollywood needs to stop making everything a ~$200 mio blockbuster.

I think it made more sense with the two Alice movies though. Burton's Alice in Wonderland was generally not received that well. It was a pretty bad film that got a big box office because of marketing and anticipation. People didn't care to see a second. I think you could make the case that the two other superhero films you mention were much the same: mediocre-to-bad films that didn't leave people wanting more. Joker, on the other hand, was well-received. I didn't care for it much but a lot of people did so Joker 2 doing so poorly seems like a new thing to me. The brands have been killed but a pattern of bad storytelling because studios think they can coast once a brand is built.

Joker’s Rotten Tomatoes score is between those of Captain Marvel and Aquaman, and all three are above Alice in Wonderland. I think the hype for them just died out because they got lost in the sea of 2010s mega-blockbusters.

There are so many saying the movie is terrible because of the ending, claiming he doesn’t become who they thought he would. No one saw him for who he was, and most of the audience didn’t either. That’s the whole point. Arthur struggled with mental illness, yet many still refuse to see him for who he truly was. Just like with Harley, the haters support seems conditional, because he didn’t meet their expectations, they threw him away like garbage. He never became the Joker they all wanted him to be. And you know what happens to people who treat others like trash? They get what they deserve! They end up with a trash movie!

It's frustrating. This sequel has powerful moments, especially in the courtroom, when focusing on alternate perspectives impacted by Arthur's actions. The biggest issue with this story is the pacing. While most musicals use their songs to advance the story, these numbers often distract or overexplain Arthur's emotions due to their redundancy with non-musical equivalents rather than enhancing them for the audience.

According to Deadline at least $50m of the reported $190m production budget went to the Phillips, Phoenix & Gaga trio! Phillips was also given Final Cut on the movie cos of the roughly $2.5bn the first movie & the Hangover movies grossed worldwide plus they did ZERO audience testing of the movie! That budget on a relatively grounded comic-book movie with substantially less VFX shots & locations than a standard blockbuster makes no sense at all as a reasonable increase from the first movie's $55-70m budget to $80-100m MAX would've made more sense.

People like us who follow news, knew that it's gonna be a musical, however, if you would just watch the trailers you would have NO IDEA. They absolutely did not portray the film as a musical: no singing scenes shown, no songs released. Nothing. The first clip with a song was released after the film came out. No wonder people were so extremely disappointed by what it is.

Look Back is amazing. I was lucky enough to live near one of those 2 theaters and I’m very glad I saw it. You should check it out if it comes to a theater near you. Also, it’s not based off of a manga series. It’s based off a one shot, so it adapts the whole of the story.

I don’t think it was mis-marketed , but as a film it was a weird choice to take an iconic villian in DC…my question is why would DC risk this kinda move with a fan favorite character? This is a great art house film if named Charles Mason or any other actual serial killer …

I'd chalk it up to a few things. Overestimating interest in a sequel, not necessarily giving people what they wanted in a sequel, R-Rating often makes it more difficult to sell once the reviews turn out bad. Just bad wisdom all around on this one.

Joker 2’s story should have been Joker 3. I actually really liked the idea of the “trial of the joker” and I think a lot of the controversial choices could have worked better if it was following a TRUE Joker 2, that actually has, you know, the Joker in it. Joker 2 should have been pure, crazy, chaotic Joker action. A fully realized “comics accurate-ish” joker. Then, if you must, deconstruct him in the third movie and put him on trial for his crimes.

The primary reason is that the director got mad that some fans of the first movie liked it for the “wrong” reasons or were the type of people he doesn’t like so he made the sequel specifically to spite them.

My Theory: The original Joker was a fluke. The mistaken belief that the Aurora shooter was dressed as the Joker, the subsequent hysteria about the safety of theaters, plus the Trump of it all created a Perfect Storm of controversy that generated interest. Critics were also kinder as they were just beginning to go through a post-Endgame Marvel fatigue. None of those conditions really exist now, add in that it took five years to make, and just seems to be a much worse movie with no real idea behind it

I disagree… Joker was a great movie on its own and audiences loved it. I was excited for 2 even after knowing it would be a musical because I trusted the director. I thought a musical was an odd choice but maybe it just has a couple songs in it. Plus I was looking forward to Gaga as Harley. The trailers looked great. Word of mouth killed this one, I’m not even gonna bother checking it out because the reaction has been so negative by people I trust… most said they wished they had not watched it as it tainted the original. I liked the original so I’d rather just have that and not have it tainted.

I think it worked because it was made during a time period where most movies looked like generic marvel movies and it had a different tale then what we had been seeing for the last several years. I think Joker 2 failed because they didn't like the fact that the critics said it was a controversial movie about right wingers and bent over backwards to say "okay, well make sure to make joker in this one pathetic and not have any moments of agency in his whole life". Because the director didn't understand his own movie.

I cannot stand this movie's pretentious, unnecessary subtitle. Why can't modern sequels just use numbers?
@JohnJacobSchmidtt
@JohnJacobSchmidtt Ай бұрын
Is a pretentious movie all together, even the first one? In my opinion, the audacity to take a character and place those characteristics onto an original character that you have created yourself. That's like having a movie called Batman and then it's just some guy named John Smith running around in a bat suit but really he's not the Batman but he calls himself the Batman. And he acts like the bad man but he really isn't the Batman. And then that movie gets such high a claim, where if someone doesn't know the character is going to think that is the Batman.

27:15 Look Back is a beautiful and poignant movie. I recommend it. The author created this manga to deal with the sadness and pain caused by the the terrible losses of the Kyoto Animation studios, which were destroyed by an madman arsonist in 2019. Although neither the manga nor the movie are about this fire, since it’s an allegory, you can still feel the loss and sadness that the author felt because of such senseless action.

Joker 2 made me appreciate Nolan as a DC director. The guy still had artistic flair but never seemed to look down on the comic book audience. I don’t think Nolan ever EMBRACED the comic book fandom, but he still respected his viewers. Todd Phillips Joker 2 felt like a movie by a director who thought he was better than his audience and it felt like he even despised them. So odd. I’m an adult Tim. I can enjoy a story about a crazy dangerous character without wanting to become one myself. We didn’t need you to “save us” from ourselves.

Joker 2 will fascinate for such a long time to come. I loved the first one and actually majority of in-person interactions about the film has also been about how much people liked it. What also stood out for me is that along my own perception, what we always talked about when it came to the film was how it was this examination of what could give birth to this fundamentally empty force of destruction and how great it was that the film made it clear that there was nothing admirable in Arthur. Yet when making the sequel, Phillips not only decided to make a response film, but he chose his target audience to be the people who didn't like the first film or were vocal in admiring Joker. And in the process made a film that just... Completely goes against the thing that made the first film a success? I guess to prove the critics wrong? Like what the actual hell?
