I actually really liked how they did "that scene" in the alley post the Gay Blade because they gave it zero weight in comparison to say the 1989 Batman. No slo mo pearls, no echoing screams. Thomas Wayne has some connections to the main character, but his death was played like some guy getting shot in an alley during some riots by some random jackoff in a clown mask. It's not Bruce's story, so it doesn't have that same focus. I thought it was fascinating to see it shot like that. "I don't get the ending." It's not a bad ending at all. It just isn't. The ending signified the death of Batman's parents, which drew the parallels between Joker and Batman. How they're forever irrevocably intertwined. It's poetry. "I don't get his interpretive dancing." He is a mentally ill man, and that's how he tries to cope with his condition. "I don't like the laugh." It's intentionally meant to be uncomfortable, because this movie is intentionally trying to be uncomfortable... "I didn't want the character to potentially die." I was interested, but I didn't really mind which outcome would befall him. The movie got so dark and misanthropic that it lowered my response to the content in the movie, so I only ended up caring about Arthur Fleck eventually, because he had enough character development to overcome that hurdle. The guy that died in the apartment scene was only so shocking because the violence was so extreme and abrupt, and because his death was so sudden and gory. Nihilism is a political belief, though, or at least a social one. It's a belief, regardless. You don't go around blowing up buildings if you're truly apathetic. The Joker in The Dark Knight is trying to rid Gotham of the criminal underworld because he sees them as a lesser class of criminal. He wants to spread chaos and anarchy, and prove that humanity sucks, which The Dark Knight sides with the "no, they don't" camp, whilst Joker sides with the "yeah, actually, they do" camp. In a sense, Joker is actually The Dark Knight's spiritual antithesis, in the sense that they're both on the complete opposite far ends of the spectrum when it comes to the sliding scale of idealism versus cynicism. The actual most unbelievable part of the movie is the scene whereby Arthur Fleck gets beaten up by a bunch of rich kids on the subway. First of all, rich kids are too much of a bunch of pussies to beat people up, that's a working class past time, and second of all, rich kids are too rich to use the subway. The scene makes no sense whatsoever. Are you on drugs? Literally the third quarter of the movie is the best bit. The ending established that the Joker indirectly caused Bruce Wayne's parents' deaths, which connected them irrevocably, and it showed he was in a mental health ward to set up where he wound up at the end of the movie. It also introduces the question of whether the whole movie actually happened or not. Just like the ending of American Psycho, and, just like American Psycho, if not, then how much of it was real? Now, my hypothesis is that the girlfriend wasn't aware he believed she was his girlfriend, and that the scene with him being worshipped atop the car were fantasies. The rest of the movie happened. The police disrupted the congregation, and imprisoned and/or killed the revolutionaries, and Arthur ends up being diagnosed with insanity and winds up being placed in the psychiatric ward, where he imagines murdering his psychiatrist, and imagines being chased about by the staff. "Did we need this?" Yes. It's called a plot twist. It is meant to signal his mental health deterioration, and to introduce the audience to the possibility that not all of the movie, if any of it, is actually happening. The plot twist being the official introduction to the audience of the fact that we're actually witnessing parts of the film from the perspective of an unreliable narrator, like in Mr. Robot. Except, there's also scenes that are from a completely neutral third person narrative perspective, instead of first person. This is the movie letting the audience know that not all of the movie is actually happening, and to encourage them to ponder how much of the movie is actually happening, and how much of it actually isn't. It also indicates his mental deterioration. It's the point in the movie whereby we learn he is having delusions, and it's the point in the movie whereby his sanity starts slipping. Also, losing that connection, because he's discovered it never actually happened, is another notch on the list of things that end up going wrong for him in his life, causing him to lose his inhibitions and his sanity. Those being him finding out he doesn't actually have a connection to his girlfriend, because she isn't actually his girlfriend, he just imagined that, him finding out his mother withheld information that he was adopted and that he was violently attacked and hospitalised by his stepfather, and, finally, his father figure he looks up to and idolises turns out to not like his stand up routines, and so thus decides to bring him up on stage to mock and ridicule him in front of all of his audience members, and him losing his job, and his access to a therapist and his medicine for his mental health. All of these factors combined are what led him to lose everything, which causes him to lose his sanity. Him finding out he imagined his neighbour being his girlfriend is an extremely important part of the movie... They didn't answer if Thomas Wayne is The Joker's father or not at all, though. He could've fabricated the documents that say Arthur's mother adopted Arthur. It only muddies the waters yet further. If there were no records, that settles it, Thomas Wayne lied about Arthur's mother being institutionalised because Thomas Wayne is Arthur's father, and he wants to distance himself from that fact because he doesn't want to risk the public finding out that he had an affair because he's wealthy and famous, so he would get negative press attention, and he doesn't want his dirty laundry being aired in public, or to be hounded by press wherever he goes, and have his name dragged through the mud in the public eye. The fact the document DOES exist, means Arthur either was adopted, or that the document was fabricated. The existence of the document only muddies the waters, and only makes the situation more ambiguous, not less...

I saw a mental health doctor about two years ago, she gave me a pamphlet to read and return to her with what I think i have. I never did because i was insulted. The VA may "acknowledge" the existence of those who have PTSD or other severe mental traumas, but they sure as hell don't do a thing about it that is useful or helpful to those afflicted by it. I am 100% disabled due to this and the VA has done very little in ways of service and the nearest Wounded Warrior Project group is in Texas with nobody closer that is willing to even call me or talk to me about a ride to any of these meetups or events. I am one who has been failed by every organization i attempt to make contact with. The one anchor that has grounded me is my wife and kids. My parents haven't even tried to help me. The only other people in my life that has done anything remotely positive and helpful to me and my situation was my sister, distant cousin, and friends who've shared the foxhole with me so to speak, my brother in arms that currently lives in Georgia.

I also groaned at that one scene, it was even stupidly over the top. My nephew described it as someone firing a 'pearl cannon'. That Bruce Wayne is going to become Pearlman and use pearl themed gadgets to fight crime. That scene should have cut once it panned to the guy in the clown mask.
@ReelNinja15 жыл бұрын
The pearls being snatched is necessary to the scene because they were being robbed. It wasn't a random killing. It was someone from a lower class in society robbing the rich. The reason it had to be shown is because of the joke. In the end, Joker tells the therapist he was thinking of a joke. When she asks to hear it, he says "you wouldnt get it". The joke is that he believed Thomas Wayne was his father but it turned out he was an orphan. Because of the shooting in the alley, Bruce (Thomas's son) became an orphan too.

Cormoran it was killing robbery. He stole her pearls. In different reiteration of the alley moment, the killer targets them for her expensive jewelry. In this film, they were targeted for being the Waynes family but it was also a robbery. This isn’t new. Watch Batman (1989), Batman Begins, and the intro to BvS. Her pearls being snatched is in every alley scene. I’m not sure Batman Forever mentioned the pearls snatching though so I’ll leave that one out.

And about the dark knight, what Rob mentions. I believe the idea that he said it is to prove a point and the end planning is actually very intentional. He changes constantly and you aren't going ever know his true motives. So by the end, it could be one thing and a completely different in the beginning. I mean why would he tell anybody what he truly intends? That's the chaos of it. I think it's a misinterpreted, but that's just my take

So about the killing of Bruce's parents.. by changing it from a random mugging (or assassination made to look like one) to someone killing him outright over wealth inequality and some negative remarks his father made, wouldn't that drastically change what Bruce would become? Also they were seeing Zorro The Gay Blade, which is about Zorro being injured and asking his flamboyant gay brother to take his place, the brother makes the outfit more flamboyant and there's other "haha he's gay" type shenanigans. I feel that would also have a different impact on Bruce. Overall I'd like to see whatever Bruce becomes in this universe. It's not going to be Batman but it should be entertaining.

I definitely enjoyed it, and I thing it captured the sense of nihilism pretty well in that literally everyone and everything in Joker's life was shit. Even his mom turned out to be kind of terrible. Overall I liked a lot of the references to Batman, especially some of the more indirect one's drawing comparisons between Joker and Batman. Like how Thomas Wayne call going around wearing a mask cowardly and how some people embrace Joker as a masked vigilante. But yeah, we didn't really need to see Thomas and MAAAAARRRRTHAAA die again, they really could have just left off with the shot of them running into the alley. One idea I had that might have been interesting was Joker dying at the end. It might seem odd, but think about it, he might be gone but there were obviously thousands of people inspired to action by him, and then we could have just assumed that one of them carried on the legacy. Or maybe it's a shitty idea, I don't know. Lastly, as a fairly SJW-ish person, I really had no problem. I don't feel the movie is unfair in its depiction of mental illness because it's clear that he's not just a man with psychological issues, literally every social system has failed him, as has every other person in his life. When he was employed, on his meds, and seeing his psychologist he had problems but was still more or less functional. I also liked how Thomas Wayne was a total prick.

I saw and enjoyed the movie, and I think this movie would work as a prequel to the Nolan Batman universe and Ledger's Joker is someone who became inspired by Phoenix's joker or maybe even is the dad who gave him those scars.

Geoffrey Sorkin A bit. It is FAR more Taxi Driver -- with Arthur Fleck as an ever weirder and crazier Travis Bickle. They have different motives for finally cracking (and go after different types of targets -- Joker not trying to save a 13 yr old Jodie Foster from a life of prostitution), but both films highlight the gradual descent into madness. Although Travis was hailed a hero at the end of his film, and Arthur is locked up as a murdering psychopath, their journeys are not dissimilar. Even so, this is a great film. Like Taxi Driver is is controversial and has made many folks uncomfortable.

I’m impressed that not only was this joker’s origin story. But Gotham’s origin story (because of the joker’s actions, crime in gotham escalated to the point where they need a hero to rival these clowns), Wayne’s story, and the joker goons story. (the one good thing the Gotham TV series did before screwing it up was, killing off a character similar to the joker but by doing so he promoted the idea of anarchy, spawning a bunch of fanatics, and the clever thing was from that point onward anyone could be the joker. But NO, the next season they just brought back the original guy to life with electricity, then brought him back again with the Lazarus pit which is really really bad writing because they keep introducing, killing off characters and reviving them.)

I liked the movie. Not loved though, 6 or 7 of 10. I agree that it would have been better without the Bruce Wayne scene. It was a good movie, difficult at bits to watch, and didn't delve quite as deeply as I would have liked. I also dislike that, basically, everyone would be able to know who Joker is in this. That's the antithesis of the character in the wider context. He's much better as just an unknown force, but here the police would easily know who he is. Shame. The trailers, on the other hand, are a masterclass on how to cut a trailer.
