Joker Nessmuk knife review

Good blade shape for a hunting knife. Nessmuk's knife was probably more intended as a hunting knife than anything else. Really impressed with this knife and from what I have seen I think Joker's other knives are pretty good quality. Interesting that you're grandfather had something similar. Where are you from out of interest? Just that I haven't seen much similar in Europe before the recent trend in Nessmuk style bushcraft knives. Guessing it is more of an American style of knife. Hi There , really nice and informative video showing your practical demonstration of the Joker Nessmuk . This is a knife I would never have chosen for myself simply because of the unusual shape but I think you demonstrated perfectly its practical applications and benefits of such a knife May I suggest that because of its not so good retention that you fix a relevent size piece of thin leather ( using waterproof adhesive down the back of the inside of the sheath between the back of the handle . Ive done this myself several times to knives that have had the same problem and it will give it a more secure grip in the sheath . I loved the way you improvised with a simple piece of twine to carry it arond your neck . Improvisation like this is something I learned way back in my Army days in the 70s and people dont tend to think like that these days . My knives are now mainly for collection rather than hard use but I am awaiting delivery of a Joker outdoors stag handle knife so hopefully I wont be dissapointed . Carry on the good work

Thanks Mike, great suggestion with the Leather strip, I did wet form the sheath, the retention is far better than it was. I was toying with the idea of hot waxing it but the leather strip sounds like a far easier solution. I think I will give that a try. Thank you.

Good review and discussion. I had a Nessmuk once and it didn't really appeal to me so I sold it, but I may have to rethink it and give it another go. Obviously a great design since its been around a long time. Cheers.

Thank you John. It is a great design for a hunting /butcher knife. There are actually quite a lot of similar old knives here in Finland, more or less the same design. But a couple of the features are all round good like the curved belly wich is great for slicing but also really nice for feather sticks. Also it chops very well for such a small knife. The original Nessmuk I think would have been thinner and probably would not have had a scandi grind. The point I am trying to make is the design has been around for a very long time but not necessarily as a knife intended for bushcraft tasks. Despite this it works very well for these tasks too. And the description of the knife took up about half a page, while he spent several pages talking about his double-bitted axe.

I'm curious when batoning with this does the baton deflect off the tip because of the shape of it wot I mean is does the baton slip off the tip when hitting it as it's a very sloped drop point

Thanks for the review. I love the 'nessmuk' shape on knive blades. What I really like about the Joker nessmuk is the stainless steel it is made of .. I tend to forget knife maintenance. Alas, since I already own the brisa nessmuk and a Bark River JX6 companion, I don't really need it!

Kuukkeli Bushcraft: I own the Joker Avispa in (nomen est omen) black and yellow... It is neckknife size, spearpoint ('kephart' like) and has a good size (diameter wise) 'chunky' handle. Perfect for my XL paws! The Brisa Nessmuk, I built it from a 'kit' with a lefty-sheath, is great. I love that rugged 'well used' look and the sturdy 12.5cm blade. But, as I found out😳, it is not stainless.. But the real treasure is the left handed leather sheath! It reminds me of the Condor Bushlore's sheath! For the price (

The nessmuk design is a very good skinner. It's essentially the first gen guthook. I have a jeff white nessy and love it! I'd love to find one of the old bark river nessmuks!!

The original Nessmuk was very much intended as a hunting /skinning knife. Joker now have a full flat grind version wich I believe would suit that purpose really well. I didn't know Bark River made a Nessmuk too. I have an old Finnish hunting knife I will be reviewing soon that is actually quite similar. Thank you very much for watching James.

Could actually be a lot more like Nessmuk's knife being a flat grind (I would guess at least that Nessmuk's knife wasn't a scandi). Maybe I should have mentioned the JG5 too but I am not too familiar with Esee knives. The 2 other knives that I did mention are in quite a similar price range. Esee are really quite expensive (at least in Europe). I would like to review a Esee knife one day. Would be interesting to compare with maybe a cheaper 1095 blade with a similar grind. Great review. Love honest reviews. I have an interesting carry. I have the 6 inch more Knev, with a little 2 inch one I taped to it. Then wrapped the shieths with some 550 fire starting para cord. About 20 feet of it.

Kippis🍻😂 I saw they were making a smaller version but one with a different grind, that is new to me. They seem to have a few with a full flat grind. Maybe that is what they have planned. Unfortunately if it is coming out in the near future I don't think I can afford it. Always interesting to try out different grinds on similar knives though. Basically scandi grind generally rocks for working with wood although I think flat grind cuts deeper if you are going cross grain. Flat grind better at things like food prep and processing game (what the original Nessmuk design was intended for, basically a hunting knife). The scandi grind will be less susceptible to serious damage and have a stronger tip. Battoning and feathersticks go scandi, food prep go flat would be my advice. I have had no issues. Micarta will always beat wood when it comes to durability in my opinion but walnut is a resilient wood which is very resistant to warping and shrinkage and it looks good too.

I really like Joker knives, very good quality and not overly expensive. I have 2 now and another one being sent from another youtuber in Spain (doing a knife swap). The one thing I have found is that the sheath retention could be better on the two that I have. Wet formed both of them and the retention is now fine. Thank you very much for watching my friend.

@@derclemi8774 I would say of all of the knives that I own it is the best all around Bushcraft knife. Downsides are the sheath retention wasn't great, after wet forming no problem. So soak in warm water (not hot) press down a little around the handle with your fingers and leave to dry with the knife in place. This might not be necessary on all of them but with mine it was. Also if you need a fine point (gutting fish is the only time I need a point that fine) then it is not fine but instead really robust. I have not overly abused the knife. It copes with battening through knotty birch wood and the edge retention has been really good. It is however possible it may chip with more serious abuse. In the way that I treat my knives it has preformed really well. I know some people are a bit rougher. That doesn't mean it wont withstand rougher treatment. Please don't worry about being annoying, I am very happy to answer questions as best as I can. In my opinion a this is a great choice for an all around Bushcraft knife. Just with a slight problem with the sheath retention which is easily fixed. You could pay a lot more money and get a knife nowhere near as good. I did do a recent video where I mentioned this knife. Basically a tag video about my top 3 knives. The joker was one of them. Happy Christmas and all the best for the year ahead.

I have no knives in Bohker 695 so I can't really give an opinion on this steel. All I can say is that the Joker Nessmuk keeps a really fine edge with little maintenance and I have had no problems with rolling or chipping. It is a really good knife. N695 is roughly equivalent with 440C. Compared to Sandvik 14c28n it should be a bit more corrosion resistant, offer better edge retention and wear resistance. On the other hand, 14c28n is tougher and easier to sharpen. I have a Joker Nomad which is in Bohler N695 but haven't time to test it yet. Will do it this weekend and see how it goes.

I have the Joker Canadian and may be purchasing the Nordic . They are made in Spain and may be made by Cudeman as a cheaper model . Don't quote me lol !🙃 Well made , good price point about $ 80 to 100 American . Micarta handles , Scandvic steel , sturdy sheath . Grizz 🐻

Yes really impressive for the price. Nice steel and the fit and finish is spot on. Not sure if they are anything to do with Cudeman though. Seen lots of there knives and somewhat less impressed. They had a nice little skinning knife though (the erizo if I remember rightly). Plenty of knife manufacturers in Spain only the two mentioned and Aitor well known outside of Spain that I can think of. Thanks for watching mate.

it's a butcher knife and is for processing meat not firewood. Also great for chopping vegetables and peeling taters.

The original Nessmuk was certainly intended as a butcher knife. The fact that this one has a full tang and a scandi grind makes it suitable for processing firewood. Joker now make a full flat grind version wich would work much better than this one for food prep. I imagine the original Nessmuk to be similar to the Russel Green River knife. Full flat grind and a much thinner blade. It's my favourite knife for food prep. We know from Nessmuks writing that he used his fixed blade for game prep and his hatchet and folding knife for firewood and carving. Apart from the blade shape (that of a butcher knife) I don't think this knife bears much resemblance to the original. Thanks for watching and have a fantastic weekend.
