I heard it in 1980 as being on a French prison island, and the 1st guy was a priest, and his statement was, "I want to face up to see the glory of God." The second guy was a fisherman of a certain ethnicity, and the 3rd was a mechanical engineer of a certain other ethnicity... and he says, "Oh... I see the problem!!" As an engineer I have told this joke COUNTLESS times! And every time something comes up at work and a collegue says, "I see the problem" I crack up.

I would have thought it was the Scot who would have the engineering talent! James Watt, Alexander a Graham Bell, Montgomery Scott (in original Star Trek). OK, there’s also Miles O’Brien in Next Generation.

folks, it works as an “Irish” joke it would work as a “blonde” joke, in this form it has nothing to do with engineering, to make it an “engineering” joke the last guy would have to be German or Swiss I imagine….
