There were other angles, in particular one from the opposite endzone, right in line with the sideline referee. That perspective shows the cornerback's grab and how the Wide Receiver's sideline momentum abruptly stops.

A different video caught the two coaches giving a hug (even more than a handshake) before the clip where the Utah coach (Whittingham) is yelling at the referees. So the BYU coach (Sitake) did NOT get snubbed by Kyle Whittingham. Sitake used to be the defensive coordinator at the UofU, working with Kyle Whittingham.

No rooting interest in the game, so I think I can speak fairly. Looked like a hold to me, but I've seen worse go uncalled. It was a tough call, but it's not like that alone propelled BYU into field goal range. Utah still had plenty of chances to make a stop after that play. The officials also didn't cause Utah to get shut out in second half and blow a double digit lead.

I’m a byu fan, and I’ve watched every angle I could find of this call. I wanted to see if it really was a hold or if we had “gotten away with one.” On this one, it really does look like he was held as he was about to break to the sideline and the cb was beat. More egregious holds may go uncalled, but I think it’s just because they were missed. This one happened right in front of the side judge, and byu was just lucky one of the refs saw it.

This is what I figured - I wouldn't be surprised if the ref saw him grab a jersey. Contact is one thing, but when the defender grabs a jersey that's going to draw a flag. I tend not to judge refs on close, judgement calls that are made in real time. You can see by the reactions here, it's legitimately debatable, and if it's debatable even watching a reply, it's not something to second guess in real time.
@DrWalsh-gn9xe

Part of the problem is it is beyond this one questionable call. The refs gave them the "Time-Out" after the 4th down after the play for BYU ended or was a bust. I have been in a lot of games where the Ref won't give the "Time-Out" as it was not called in time. They just say you have to call it earlier. So the "Time-Out" re-do, then they just have the automatic first down (even though that may have been the right call given it was beyond 5 yards down the field). That "Time-Out" should have been denied (game over)

I don't think it was about 1 play. This guy started too far into the game. He could have started 2 plays earlier and understood why AD was pissed. How about intentional grounding no call? He was getting hustled and threw it out toward no one while in the tackle box. Also, missed holds by BYU on 2nd and 3rd downs. Tackle on the right grabs wrist as ute defender blows by...no call. I am glad a streak was not lost by BYU but winning this way? Seems obvious refs had it in for being "fired" by pac 12 if that is true.

So the deep flank (Field Judge in this case) has only one job when the defender is in press coverage. He has the #1 receiver and is watching him and the defender. You can clearly see that the DB gets juked and as the WR pulls away, his shoulder dips and he loses his balance. That's an indicator that the DB pulled on the WR to keep him from getting open. The angle the FJ has is perfect to see the pulling action. Looks like he let that go, but the DB grabbed again and that's when the flag came out. Also if you watch the QB, that receiver was his primary target. He had to hold the ball longer because his WR was being held.
@deathminder9206
@deathminder9206 2 ай бұрын
Exactly. That ref would not even know if the Utah line was about to crunch the QB or not. He would just be watching for a hold, which he has to call regardless, or PI which he may not have to call if the ball is not delivered.

Or the WR acted like he got pulled harder than he did because it's fourth and he wants a call. I don't even like Utah but looking at the angles that was an acting job by the Reciever, ref should be smarter than that. Most refs don't make that mistake because they understand the situation.

You did not include the camera angle that showed Harlan walking ONTO the field while the Utes took that last kickoff and began their lateral-fest. It shows Harlan walk onto the field and the official turn and see him and throw that last flag. Also - did anyone else notice the game clock stood still at 4 seconds left as the Utes received the kickoff, ran around lateralling the ball for like 15 seconds, and then the game clock started once the BYU player jumped on top of the loose football to end the game? Seriously the most bizarre last 3 minutes of football I've ever witnessed in my life.

actually, the call could have went 50/50. The way the game was refereed up to that point would indicate that was not a hold. Refereeing defensive cornerbacks is a tough/gray area. If you look at the totality of the game and how it was refed up to that moment, this should not have been called. That is where the outrage is and rightfully so. Nonetheless, Utah coach and AD should have taken it private instead of public.

@@mrkennady you’re absolutely wrong. The rule you’re referring to is for illegal contact, the penalty called was for defense holding. Why was he called for defense holding and not illegal contact? Because illegal contact is not in the NCAA rulebook. So the official was absolutely correct in the call of holding and the Utah defender did commit the penalty. But even if the NCAA had illegal contact as a possible penalty, the Utah defender would still be in violation. Why? In the NFL, if a defender loses contact within the 5 yard space and he makes contact again, it’s a penalty for illegal contact. So maybe instead of trying to call anyone out for not knowing “basic” rules, you can actually learn them first, yourself.

Utah should have won this game, but they let emotion get the better of them and it started with their coach! The holding call could have gone either way, but from that moment, Utah played like they should have won and BYU did just enough. There was another interesting call at the end of the 1st half which is relevant here: with 3:00 left in the 2nd qtr, Utah had a 1st & 10 at midfield and the QB got sacked. It looked (live) like he had been pulled down by his face mask. There were two back judges who had the play right in front of them-one of them was this Asian (head) ref who did not throw a flag, but the other one did. They came together for a brief chat, and the head ref took the other guy’s word for it and enforced the penalty. But the replay showed this was clearly not a face mask-the defender had his hand under the QB’s chin and pulled him down by the jersey/pads. It should’ve been 2nd &18 in their own territory, instead it was a 1st down at the BYU 30, and Utah scored a td 3 plays later to give them an 11-pt ht lead. The holding call at the end of the game could’ve gone either way, but this call significantly benefited Utah and it’s interesting how they’ve forgotten all about it. And I’m completely impartial here.

Yea it's the right call, the reason he didn't call it off the beginning grabbing is because within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage you're allowed to be pretty much as physical as you want apart from literally taking the reciever to the ground, so when the ref saw they were past 5 yards and the dude was still yanking on him he threw the flag. Yes people will blame refs for this and if it was me as a ref there personally I wouldn't make the call, but at the same time I completely understand people who would say "no that's just a dumb play by the defender so it deserved to be called". Either way it wasn't the refs fault quite frankly, he did his job even if you don't agree with the circumstances of the call you can't argue the fact he was holding him.

Utah left BYU behind when they won the Pac12 lottery pick. BYU a better choice at the time but we're a religious school. They start treating us like we're an FCS team. 14 years of conference smack and recruiting advantages over BYU. They beat us 11 straight (most of which were one possession games and many controversial calls that went Utah's way). They actually believed they were on the verge of being a true national powerhouse, even though they were beating up on a very bad Pac12 conference where their physical style of play works against Pac12 finesse style of play. Then the last 15 months happened... Pac12 implodes. Utah is the last holdout. They insult the Big12. The Big12 still throws them a lifeline. They begrudgingly join the Big12 and they all believe they're going to own the Big12 on their way to the Big10. Then the games are actually played and they lose 4 in a row to mediocre teams. Then they lose to their rival for the second time in a row. Not so easy when you're on equal footing. They haven't beat BYU in over 5 years. BYU now has the NIL advantage, culture advantage, and scoreboard advantage. That's why Harlan and Kyle are crying in disbelief. 14 years of undeserved advantages disappearing seemingly over night. You love to see it. I'll add one more thing: that game shouldn't have even been close. We had a phantom facemask called on a sack that eventually led to a Utah TD. We had a pick in our DBs hands but he got greedy and overplayed it hoping to score 6. We had a field goal at the end of the second half but the clock operator bled the clock below 10 seconds and our false start caused a clock run off. Utah was lucky about all those things. They were lucky the game was at RES. We should have won by at least two possessions. Better luck next time Utes. You're done.

@@selfishstockton6123 Maybe the fact that they had a double digit lead in this game that started with a TD for them off a blown call, got shut out in the second half, and STILL tried to blame the loss solely on the officiating? Keep up dude, it's not hard to comprehend that OP is saying that if they maybe started playing better they wouldn't feel like they'd need to blame the refs for losing them games 🙄 I'm not a fan of either team, so being unbiased is easy. You two should just work on your reading comprehension skills; or do they not teach that at UU? Edit: Goddamn autocorrect typos, GBoard is a bitch 😂

@@selfishstockton6123You’d think he would at least have some grace in losing, with all the experience he’s had. He’s acting like he was robbed because he lost to an objectively better team, and he embarrassed his entire organization by whining about a call which has been verified as correct by a ton of sideline video evidence. He’s like a 10-year-old blaming his controller because he sucks at Call of Duty.

Imagine being 6-0 and needing to have the refs bail you out of a loss against a team that's 1-4 in conference play...

Every conference's fans think they have the worst officials in college football. That's the real meme.

I don't know much about American football but surely having a referee who used to work for you and got fired to officiate a game involving you and someone else is surely a major conflict of interest? I suppose it's a matter of just trusting the referee won't purposely seek vengeance but as we've seen from Baseball or Football, ref's have big egos.

Next time score enough points that the refs can’t decide the game for you😉

Look at that hold from the angle from the end zone, it was clearly a hold.

They could call that 20 times a game if they wanted to is the thing. Calling it on 4th and 10 on a play that should have ended the game is insane. (Also, it didn't affect the play) Let the guys play. 🤷

@@its.that-time But it did affect the play. Made the receiver unavailable for the pass, BYJew clearly looked to him and saw it wasn't an option.

Former football coach here. That was an obvious defensive holding call. The only reason it was "controversial" is because of the time and situation--which are NOT reasons to ignore an obvious penalty.

I agree. You can clearly see the defender pulling downward as the receivers shoulder also goes downward. I actually like Utah better, but the hold seems pretty clear to me.

It’s holding. It’s just socially acceptable to be a sore loser nowadays.
