3:14 "Mmmh." This dude is legit impressive and all over the map. I love hearing him riff on familiar phrases on the show. Once he did that crazy little Debussy thing, and it was like a jazzy, expressionistic take on impressionism, and somehow the piano didn't straight up explode.
@ncorp26687 жыл бұрын
Wow...he plays the piano so beautifully...very talented hands. His singing voice sounds differently than I thought it would...no New Orleans accent. All around, very elegant...even as far as to say soft and delicate, a rarity in this day and age.

This needs to be a semi-regular segment on the show: Jon Batiste performing a few end-of-show set-pieces. The Late Show has an embarrassment of riches of talent in both Jon and Stephen, they should make the most of what they have. There isn't a need to go outside the studio for musical talent all the time.

You're correct. I just figured the flat was implied because it was uppercase (and therefore major) :P
@Dave-xr3rj7 жыл бұрын
i feel like it's more of a modulation to minor. it's a standard one overused in most musicals, as they love modulations. if you enjoy this sort of sound you might like them
@je-pq3de7 жыл бұрын
for it to be a modulation there needs to be a part of the song that was "modulated to". Note how it resolves to the original key center - it never really left it

@Dave-xr3rj7 жыл бұрын
Yes, people do play like this today, and much much better, it's just that you choose not to consume them so they are not popular. In fact, Jon Batiste isn't actually very good at all, with quite a large number of mistakes every few seconds. Listen to Hiromi Uehara by comparison, who is one of the best Jazz artists in the world following the death of Oscar Peterson. Jon's piece is chirpy, but not even close to a standard professional pianist, let alone one of the legends we have performing today. I'm not wanting to criticise Jon, I just don't think it's right to say "nobody plays like that" or that for some reason it should be in the "mainstream" etc.
@no1nose9277 жыл бұрын
Dave, it's all a matter of taste. If one likes the whompty, whompty, whomp sound that lacks feeling or soul, then Hiromi is the one. If one likes smoother jazz then they might find her very disappointing. The performance of hers that I heard sounded like horses running up and down the keyboard--completely maniacal, but if that is your taste then good for you; however, it certainly does not mean that she is better than others. So saying that Jon's performance "is not even close....," that "he's not very good at all," or that there were "quite a large number of mistakes" is no more than your personal opinion, the same of which could be said for Hiromi. In fact, (not to be critical of her but) her whole performance sounded like a mistake to me. Nevertheless, that does not necessarily mean that she made errors. So that type of commenting about Jon's performance is quite a stretch given that so many on the other hand find his jazz music to be that of an ultimate professional.
