I find it funny that Jon Stewart is now portrayed as a hermit who lives either in the woods or apparently under Stephen's desk.

No... She was in Chappaqua NY and he opened a 12 acre sanctuary for abused and sick animals with his wife in NEW JERSEY. Two different states and just because hes not on TV regularly, doesnt mean hes a hermit. He and his wife are spending their money doing something amazing. Unlike others who spend their money trying to amass more and more and more and reminding everyone that they are superior because of that money.

+meeg_2005 this particular show was. That's why when he said bullshit the sensor was so broad (which also the fact that they had a guy running a delay at all on TV is amazing). Normal shows are taped in advance.

Not that there is anything wrong with it, but at least they are both out of the closet now, as evidenced by their exchanged "stimulations" under the desk. Afterwards, they likely got a motel room together.

This isn't romance--it's love. The two of them are absolutely non-romantically in love with one another. It's so rare for straight men to be so open about their affection. A falling out between them would cause a massive chain reaction and destroy the entire universe. With any luck the effect will limited to our own galaxy.

I think that, like a Hall of Fame quarterback, on a team where the highest of stakes are on the line, Jon should come off the bench and replace the talented young rookie in his spot for one last season. Comedy Central could even come up with a face saving excuse for Trevor, like - there were some technical issues with his immigration status, and he has to go back to South Africa, but we expect to have it cleared up... probably in the first week of November :-)

TheCanadiangirl4 Don't forget John Oliver. And Trevor Noah, although I don't watch the Daily Show much myself anymore. Still, even with them and Stephen Colbert and Samantha Bee, we need Jon Stewart to return. His appearances on this show have been amazing, but it would be so lovely and uplifting and revitalizing to have Jon Stewart back on a regular basis in some form, cutting through the BS and holding people accountable as only he can.
@Elithrae
@Elithrae 7 жыл бұрын
The funny part is Samantha Bee & Colbert both started on The Daily Show, lol. Honestly, Jon created some epic monsters to help carry the torch after him. I personally love Trevor because he's less tolerant of assholery than Jon, because he grew up in Apartheid. I mean really, you can't be a biracial kid in South Africa during Apartheid and NOT wind up being pretty fucking disgusted when you see what's happening in America, and he doesn't pull back on that and I love, love, love it. I miss Jon, don't get me wrong. But I absolutely freaking ADORE Trevor and am glad Jon wasn't replaced by some bumbling idiot just going for laughs. Also, John Oliver is the absolute SHIT and I adore him.

@Lowkeylie
@Lowkeylie 4 жыл бұрын
It’s because John-love his views or hate them-seems to genuinely believe in what he preaches. The humor is used to form a point, to stick in the side of those in a position of power he feels need to be kept in check, lest they abuse it. But sometimes the anger boils over and jokes just aren’t enough anymore.

But, just fyi, long-story short it isn't fancy, they don't/didn't think it is fancy either. "Americas Darkest Times" I think we had worse. ( 18th and 19th century was filled with death, disease, war, slavery. The 20th century still had poor health standards and racism in the beginning, but got better later on. Now, we live longer, have technology, and overall better quality of life. At the very most, 2007 might have been slightly better, but we're still in the best time so far in history. )
@skele3310
@skele3310 8 жыл бұрын
+47D Those are two different things. Having advanced technology doesn't mean we can't be in dark times. Racism is not as bad, true, but how long until that is turned around? How long before there is a standard to inappropriately profile minorities just because they are one? How long before there are attempts of segregation, the shut down of the First Amendment, the neutralization of our centuries of diplomacy with other nations? This truly could be a very dark time in America, and a dark time for the world.

August of 2024, I decided to give this a rewatch after enjoying some of Jon Stewart's recent work in the new Daily Show host rotation, and uh... yeah, it holds up, 8 yeas later. Obviously a LOT has happened in those 8 years, but the central messages here - pointing out the hypocritical 180s committed by those on the Right where Trump is involved, and the "you don't own this country, or patriotism, or Christianity, etc." bit - those feel just as relevant now as they did then (if not more so). (Also, Jesus, has it seriously been EIGHT YEARS since this?! Goddamn.) (Also also, Sean Hannity will be forever known as "Lumpy" to me because of this. Literally every time I've seen him on screen in the past 8 years, I've been like "oh look, it's Lumpy, lol." Jon Stewart has permanently ruined this man's name in my mind, and considering who he is, I'm okay with that.)

The thing is, toward the end of his Daily Show tenure, he wasn't as funny. He was clearly worn out, and frustrated by everything. Colbert was consistently funnier, and got at the issues in a way that Jon wasn't because he was clearly so angry about everything. Jon definitely needed a break, and even in this bit, there's a lot more anger than wry commentary. I think we need some of that, but I also respect that, for him, being angry all the time is exhausting and I don't blame him a bit for needing some time away. I'd love to see him go to a weekly cable format....but then he'd be treading very close to what is now John Oliver's territory.

The sad part is that his viewers will never see this. If you religiously watch Fox News like my parents do, you buy into their indoctrination that all other media is Liberal Propaganda. Faux News has done irreparable harm to American political discourse and we are seeing it personified with the nomination of Donald Trump.

I know John was under a lot of stress towards the end of his run, but, honestly, we need him now more than ever. People still look up to him as that one honest political spokesperson, who wasn't afraid to call people on their BS. We are about to entire a period with a leader so ridiculously prone to lying, that we can't tell what's bs and what isn't. We have John Oliver, who has been an amazing factor in bringing up more obscure topics, but he still doesn't hold that same level John had for making a statement. Oliver is great and we love him for calling people out, but he doesn't have that same level of command Stewart had. Simply his return for one night sent the media into flames. He called them out and they frothed at the mouth. We need John Stewart back.

Yes, I can understand that talented people can want to move on to other things after a while, but they built something AMAZING. Two of the funniest shows ever that also managed to inform and shine a spotlight on issues that others often would not. And as for Stewart - just look a the careers he launched from one little half hour basic cable show! BTW, if you haven't watched it, check out "Full Frontal" with Sam Bee. She was never one of my favorites on the Daily Show, but she is knocking it out of the park on her show.
