What a wonderful singer and what a voice! Seeing Vickers and Fischer-Dieskau in Das Lied at the Music Ctr in Los Angeles was the most marvelous and magical evening--what a treat and never to be forgotten! Bless you Mr. Vickers!

I've said it elsewhere but there is absolutely no comparison between Vickers and someone like MdM. Vickers is the most complete artist/singer/musician/actor I have ever seen.

What a great voice Vickers had, and great acting skills. He really owned his parts. This opera has some of the most uplifting, ethereal music I've ever heard. Sad that this whole performance is not available on DVD, but what a great scene this is!

"Fidelio" is played all over Germany regularly. It is the first ever written opera in German, so over here it's quite will known. But the roles are quite hard to sing. I am working on Florestan at the moment and it's really tiring to sing. And this scene is only the beginning of the roles, even is it in the second act.

@@JanKristofSchliepTenor Thank you. We have family there and my wife speaks German. We also have one opera singer, a man and an old friend long. gone. Charlotte Meis who did Wagner and she played on old record of one of her performances pre-hitler.

The "best" Florestan (by far!) at least of the half dozen I have heard on record. Greg is this from a performance available on DVD possibly at the ROH or Salzburg? I obviously have the Klemperer and Karajan recordings actually preferring the latter overall for the whole cast of great singers.

This is evidently a segment, the only one I know of, from a performance by Vickers with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra conducted by Franz-Paul Decker in 1974.

@@chumbleyr another great tenor with a voice right for the part, but just lacking that sheer power and beauty of tone which Vickers uniquely possessed - mind you a lot of people don't like Vickers' voice full stop! I think James King is in the Karl Bohm video of Fidelio?

I've always been a huge fan of Mr. Vickers. But before I watched a video where he sang Canio in Pagliacci, I had no idea how superbly he acted. Only† one thing troubles me about that virtuoso. He refused ro ply Tanhauser because he thought it was sacrilegious. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4myeaiQrr6qh9U
