He told me there are far too many nobodies wandering about waving flags who were just riding on the backs of the poor sods who never came home. When he died some years ago I was lucky in getting his last wish granted after being pointed in the right direction by an ex CPO I worked with , I got his ashes buried at sea by Portsmouth RN from under the White Ensign . I still lay a wreath on his behalf the day after commemoration day and as for wearing a relatives medals on the right side I would never ever do that , only those who earn them are entitled to wear them .

If all of the Paras, Marines and SAS I have met in pubs over the years had actually served we'd be talking about a military bigger than China's crammed into our small country for that kind of occurrence. Funny how one rarely meets anyone from a less elite (though perfectly good !) infantry regiment.

I served in the RE from 1969 to 79 and did many tours of Northern Ireland. I did nothing heroic and was not involved in any special ops. I was awarded a GSM with Northern Ireland clasp (which my alcoholic brother stole to pretend he had served). I also spent time in BAOR and travelled to Denmark and Canada. Can I be a hero now?

@@computerbob06 Two tours as infantry were crap. I was a squaddie not a soldier. On RE tours, when paddy blew things up we rebuilt them - sometimes. As specialist search team members we did work that seemed to have some meaning. In BAOR we pretended to blow up bridges and laid thousands of pretend mines. Spent many a day doing pretend weapons drills, pretend gas training and pretend first aid - and then went to the bar. I was a very good shot so I spent as much time as possible on the ranges. Happy (crappy?) days.

My dad was awarded a DCM for his bravery during the assault on the German bunker codenamed "Hillman" by the 1st Suffolks on D-Day. He has passed away now, but I went to loads of military events with him and it's amazing how many of these idiots are out there - from the re-enactment mob who think their all in the SAS desert patrol or US 82nd Airborne, to the ones who try to pass themselves off as genuine servicemen like this mug. My personal gripe is all the fake silverware knocking about. There are so many of these medal manufacturing companies, that you can't tell a real medal issued by the MOD from a fake. A "Walter" like the one in this video could have 6 medals on his chest and they're all Franklin Mint rubbish and someone meeting this clown with no knowledge could be highly impressed by him. I remember one National Service fella who would turn up to the opening of an envelope, (and seemed to be at any event my dad was invited to) went over the course of a year from sporting just a General Service Medal, to a chestful of medals - including one for being on the artic convoys!
