saw this trio 5/3/97 at a very small club in Albany NY. They took a break and I went right up to him and struck up a conversation. We went out to smoke and he pulled out a joint of some crazy good shit. He was a "polymath" a super genius. He said he'd go to the library n every town he played at and read 4 or 5 books A DAY ! My teacher (Chuck D'Aloia - a monster jazz player in his own right) didn't "like" the show, said "not my cup of tea" (ego got n the way)Beside the beautiful orchestral compositional fluidity or whatever words you try to apply to his playing it's also amazing to think that if all the notes played by shawn that are on KZbin were counted, it probably would be a number equivalent to the number of stars in our galaxy.

@u.v.s.55838 жыл бұрын
10 notes per second on average will give him some 60k notes per show. Now, one show this long for 10 000 days will give him 600 million notes, which is probably three orders of magnitude (three powers of ten) less than the stars in our galaxy. At least one thousand Solar systems for each note Shawn has ever played - see how huge our Galaxy is?

And "Stellar Rays" is actually Time Is The Enemy (title track from album). Can you clarify??
@anonymouscat62072 жыл бұрын
@@BRO77TX Thanks for your clarification. It seems that the titles "Baraji", "Stellar Rays", and also "Juvalamu" come from the album "Two Doors" by Michael Shrieve, featuring Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg. But they refer to (essentially) the same songs as "Rag B/B", "Time Is The Enemy", and "Personae" respectively, which are from the albums "Personae" and "Time Is The Enemy" by Shawn Lane and Jonas Hellborg. I was lucky enough to hear Hellborg, Lane & Sipe @ Blues Alley in DC. My bass teacher said "you've got to see these guys. They're all great, Hellborg is astounding." I said something noncommittal like; "Well maybe, Blues Alley in the middle of the week ... I don't know, maybe" Jon said; "No, you have to go. I'll buy the tickets, I'll drive, you *have* to go!" So we did. The club was nearly empty for that, the 1st set of the night. We sat about 25' from the stage, right in front of the bass amp, far enough for the sound field to fully develop. I don't think I had my eyes open more than 30 or 40 seconds during the set; truly transportation-al music. The only time I remember having such an experience was w/ the original Mahavishnu quintet, 20 years prior! When I opened my eyes, the 1st thing I saw were the eyes of the only person seated next to me, a woman about 30-35. We just *looked* in each others eyes for 1/2 a minute or so, then she said; "Jesus, did you feel that too?" and I said; "Yes I did, yeah. Was that great, or *what*?"" At that point the other person at her table, a guy, took her shoulder and said; "C'mon baby, let's go." I said; "See you." She said; "See you later." He said "No you *won't*" and led her out. LOL!! WHAT A SHOW"
