ON JUNE 14, GERMAN TENOR JONAS KAUFMANN walked onto the stage of La Scala in Milan, the high altar of Italian opera, for one of the most highly anticipated performances of 2015. The concert made national news in Italy and, following an overflow of encores and more than half an hour of ovations, the audience was still left wanting more. Kaufmann's spectacular performance is the focus of this concert film, directed by Brian Large, which was broadcast into cinemas worldwide.

That's because he rounds his vowels too much, to make himself sound like the dramatic tenor he will never be. He doesn't respect the balance of chiaroscuro, the vowels should always be clear in the lower range and the sound would naturally sound darker and steely if he was truly a dramatic tenor (See Mario Del Monaco's version and pay attention to the vowel quality), while still having a bright quality.

lo que siempre me llama la atención de sus presentaciones, no es solo la voz, sino su sonrisa tan sincera al final, denota muchísima humildad, porque sabe que dio lo mejor de sí. Si es el mejor tenor o no, claro hay un mundo de tenores con mejor técnica y un registro vocal más controlado, pero este tenor tiene algo muy particular, no solo canta, deja fluir sentimientos en su voz, que hacen un fuerte efecto en el público. Esto es lo que lo hace especial.

Dear sir, have you ever heard a real tenor? do you have a vague idea of who the real tenors are? If this were the 1950s he wouldn't be allowed to sing in the toilets or to even enter a theatre.. I strongly suggest you get yourself educated. Start with Anselmi, Caruso, bonci, de Lucia, then on Francesco merli, Pertile, Schipa, Masini then on to Del monaco, di Stefano, Corelli etc. Then you can make some informed comments.

Nah, can't understand why they love opera, but still listening netrebko, ayvazov, kaufman, damingo (now baritone). They are all awful, ruin opera. Mr. Kauffman is my favorite tenor of this generation, but his voice is not the best ever... well, at least not for me. His technique is good, but the fact that he tries to sound "darker" when he sings Italian Operas, makes him vunerable. I know this because I have the same issue. Comparing him to Pavarotti was a miss.

Dear Lord! I feel as though my heart has just been torn bodily from my chest but the terrible pain feels so incredibly GOOD! How could such a thing be possible? I could see from the look on his face at the very end that he TOO was tremendously moved by this marvellous thing, but he got it under cntrol and came through with a most beautiful smile indicating that he too was enjoying this great vocal triumph. I feel so glad that every now and then a greatly-gifted or extraordinarily loving SOMEONE is able to transcend the usual barriers that keep most of us pinned down in anxiety and mudane mediocrity. Artists of Jonas's exalted aliber are rare, but I thank God for them, because they are able to pierce the gloom and show us glimses of Heaven.

@Leonie I have read tens of books on opera,on composers, on the history of opera, on vocal styles. I have read Celletti and the most important critics and literature on the subject. I have a wide knowledge of opera singing starting from the early 1900 until now, I can recognise and classify styiles and voices. I can tell you without any doubt that Jonas Kauffman doesn't posses any skill to make him "great". His singing style is wrong, his voice is weak, he sounds like a veal ( I won't say like a baritone not to offend great baritones), his version of Aida online are repulsing, so are his version of any aria you can find on Spotify. I dont hate the guy, I hate the way marketing and money has ruined opera, and this singer us the symbol. If you want to have an intelligent conversation,just go and get yourself some knowledge on real opera singing and then we can have a nice chat, as , I'm sorry to say it, but you have absolutely no clue.

@Leonie you are way more arrogant than I am and you are demonstrating it. If Kaufman is your standard of a strong and full voice than your standards are extremely low and thus is a facte. The fact you are quoting the biggest market singers like Lanza and Pavarotti, makes me think your knowledge of singers is very limited.. critics would never refer to them as example, maybe the first Pavarotti. On this line it seems like you would listen to marketing products like Netrebko or Joyce Didonato (she's worse than anybody else btw!, American horror at its best). Remember opera is not an Anglo-Saxon thing, it would NEVER could have born out of Anglo-Saxon countries. Hence why there is not one single composer worth to be remembered there. It's just a different society, lifestyles and anthropology. So maybe you should not be arrogant and if possible try to extend your listening, from the 1900s on wards. I dont need to go back to the 50s as you say, I can even pick singers from today, for example Angelo Villari is 5 times better than Kaufman, so is Lorenzo Papasodero and others. there is very little meritocracy in opera today, it's become a consumerist thing and one need to be in the right circles to have a chance,regardless of their qualities.. as a result you can hear much better voices in provincial theatres (in Italy). Forget you're American and you know everything for a few days and try to listen to the singers who made this amazing art to the top. Kaufman is not one of them, not nearly.

Kaufmann's voice sounds like it's coming from a warm wooden box. What he has on his side rather than Corelli and Pavarotti is better recording technology. I prefer him over other tenors but all due respect for the legends.

Straining. Stressed. Cow in a bucket monotonous sound. No squello, ping or soar needed in Italian Opera. Vocally Kaufmann is stuck in his Helden middle. Nessun Dorma requires a dramatic spinto with a voice of steal, effortless animal drive and powerhouse intensity. Example: You Tube: Corelli--Nessun Dorma (Turandot/G. Puccini) 1962. --And Corelli did it without today's high tech amplification. There a reason why Turandot is above Kaufmann's performance paygrade and why he has refused to do that opera on stage.

Found it. The venue is "La Scala". Jonas, "nailed it". I'd say, "La Scala" is pretty much the home ground for Grand Opera. The thunderous applause ought to dispel the, "critics".

La Scala is "historically" the homeground of opera. Now it only means something in relation to its past. Kauffman being allowed to even enter the palace is a big defeat for such a theatre. If you know deeply opera and its history you will understand what I mean. Otherwise you can't.
