I really love being able to be part of this, it’s just as exciting to see it in the hands of a master bushcrafter as it is to make them! The leatherwork by Old Country Leather is the best I’ve seen! True artisans who are dedicated to quality!! Thank you for believing in us Jordan and thank you to all who support us!

Great looking design Jordan, And awesome that you have the slide on style head! So practical, but hard to find. Thanks for the information. I love learning how other cultures use their axes. Great methods for splitting when you don't have a chopping block.

It looks cool. I never thought or heard about sharping an axe like a chisel. That sounds clever. I have 2 at home but they are no Jordan Taiga Axe 😂😂😂so I have to get one of those. Thanks for the video.

Sir, I am extremely excited about this. For what you've created I think the price is fair but I'll have to save up for a little before jumping on it. About 2 years ago I grabbed a CRKT axe (because I hate the normal handle attachment that requires wedges), scraped the clear coat off of it, oiled it, and shaped the handle a little bit. Basically a mini, budget version of yours 😂. I hope life is nothing short of amazing for you and your's.

The blade is more for carpentry, and not for the taiga. The taiga ax has a thicker blade, which can be used to split logs into logs. When chopping, your ax will get stuck and will not eject the wood chips. I speak as a Russian person who has been working with an ax all his life). The weight of the taiga ax iron should be about 600 - 900 grams. The butt of the ax must not be hardened, otherwise the eye may burst in the cold in winter. An important criterion for the Russian ax is the beard in the eye, which provides additional protection against chipping of the ax handle.
@hobojordo
@hobojordo Жыл бұрын
In order to chop (split) wood effectively with a thin-butted axe you hold it at a slight angle - this prevents the axe from sticking and also splits effectively. It has the added value of keeping the axe from driving through the log and into the ground if it splits easily. It also allows for the thin bit in other situations which makes for deeper chops and better bushcraft carpentry. If you’d like to hear from a reindeer herder more on the nuances of the Evenki mods to the standard Russian axe, here you go: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fWmwaXZsbs6YptE This isn’t simply just a Russian axe. It has incorporated Evenki mods (taper lock, single bevel) and my own personal tweaks.

Torn on this. I'm a lefty in most things, like writing, carving, etc, but then chopping, playing hockey, swinging a bat I'm a righty. Actually, writing that out helped my decision, since I'd be switching hands for fine tasks vs gross it doesn't make sense to get this. Darn, I'd still like one but c'est la vie.

Hi Jordan, I am very happy with my Taiga Axe. I find the one sided sharpening is much easier than trying to maintain an angle. I have been using my axe for 3 months, and now the head is slightly wobbly. I am curious to know how you tighten the head on the taiga axe? I know a lot of guides say to drive metal wedges in, or stuff the sides with wooden wedges, or to soak the head with the handle still on it in linseed oil to make it tight again, what is your preferred method of tightening this style axe?
@hobojordo
@hobojordo Жыл бұрын
Yeah just dip the handle in linseed oil and let it soak it up and expand… it’ll tighten up. In Siberia we would dip it in a puddle occasionally overnight to cinch it up, but water evaporates out whereas the oil will hold longer

@hobojordo

Thank you! This one performs better and some of the tweaks I made I believe are practical improvements (a little more handle contact around the poll, weight distribution, etc)
@max_fjellstorm
@max_fjellstorm Жыл бұрын
@@hobojordo I noticed that there’s no metal at the end of the handle and also the profile of the handle isn’t squared. Isn’t that something unique to Siberian axes?
@hobojordo
@hobojordo Жыл бұрын
@@max_fjellstorm the profile of the handle is quite oblong, in line with the large eye, giving good grip that won’t twist, but they aren’t necessarily “square” .. In cross-section it has a flattened oval shape with a thinner front edge and rounded back edge.
