Jonas......looks like it's time to build a "Get Home Box". Here is my suggestion. I know that added weight is always a concern, But this is a must. Buy a plastic snap seal lid box you can easily stow on the bird and pack these items in it: Never touch the box until you absolutely need it. List: 2 tubes of 5 min epoxy, small 3 pack of super glue, small kit of JB Weld, pack of razor blades/ razor knife, small coil of .032 stainless wire, standard fuses pack, 6ft of #12 electrical wire both red and green, 2 rolls of electrical tape, one roll of gorilla duct tape, Gerber multitool, micro torch, small coil of 60/40 solder, 3ft of .25 rubber vacuum tube, 100cc plastic syringe, small can of WD40, small bottle of rubbing alcohol, 2 shop rags, 2 butane lighters, and a magnet, Don't leave home without it. I got deja vu of riding with my buddy, back when he had a '90 Softail. One ride, his voltage regulator caught on fire ... another ride, we thought we were going to have a BIG fire when his fuel line burst while idling on a 90° day in traffic - BIG cloud of white gasoline fog (YIKES!!) ... another time, his footpeg rattled off ... then his tail light / license plate ... then his clutch failed 100 miles from home, and we had to keep moving in bumper-to-bumper MA traffic in the breakdown lane, running stop signs and red lights ... nothing but fun with that bike, LOL! Ok, I guess yours and Trent's situations here weren't too bad, Jonas! 🤣 Great stuff as always, man!

Reminds me of the Lyrics of the song "Rose Garden" . "Along with the Sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime". ie as Sods Law states if something can go wrong it will go wrong. As for those rudder pedals put some extra gusseting in. The extra weight is zilch and it will save a lot of hassle. I have fixed a small hole in a rad by just screwing in a self tapping screw over some gunk. It lasted for years. This trip just shows that in that sort of terrain having a buddy along in another plane is a BIG asset. Regards, Jim in NI UK

Have you looked into capacitors for a battery replacement? They still don't have the energy density of LiPo or LiFePo but they are all but bullet proof. For sure you can damage them but you pretty much have to set out to do so. Recharge in seconds and have a ginormus output rate. SuperCaps are denser but still not at the same density of chemical batteries.

I would hang on to the $300.00 LiFePO4 battery. The individual cells look like 18650. If you can get into the case you may be able to repair it by replacing or charging the individual cell. As you mentioned, there is a big difference between a Lipo (Lithium Polymer) and a LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery. I have found the LiFePO4 battery to be very safe. You mentioned an overcharge circuit not being present in the battery. Your alternator charging circuit should take care of that. Would it be possible to a digital voltage gauge in the cockpit so you could monitor the voltage while it is charging? That is what I would do. I enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one.
@MichaelLloyd4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct. LiFePO4 is not the same as Lithium Ion batteries that "have issues". I didn't understand why you bypassed the BMS, if you could give me some details I might be able to help. Or just go over to Julian's channel OH8STN Ham Radio (Ham operators love our LiFePo4 packs. I built a 30A and 15A pack as well as some smaller packs). HE has some pretty good how to build LiFePo4 pack tutorials. You probably already know this but the BMS ensures that the cells remain balanced AND they prevent pulling the batteries down too far, which screws up the cells. Also, if you get yourself a 100W foldable solar panel, some Anderson powerpole connectors (with the correct tool. Powerworx sells all of that) to hook it up when needed, leave the BMS intact, then you'll have a portable battery charger system that will get you back in the air in a couple of hours if the sun is shining.

The Kitfox was worth more money and I knew if I put the mods on my Capella, it would preform just as good or better than the Kitfox.
