In an event sponsored by The Jefferson Council, the UVA Center for Politics, and the College Republicans at UVA Jonathan Haidt discusses:
“The Meltdown of the Universities and Ideas for Rebuilding Them”
In 2015, American universities were widely respected and trusted. By 2023, they had alienated conservatives, moderates, and even most liberals. What happened? In this talk Haidt will describe several interacting causes of the implosion, including the rise of identitarianism, political polarization, declining viewpoint diversity, and the arrival of Gen Z in 2014 and end with a discussion of what needs to be done to construct institutions that can be homes for free inquiry in the post-Babel, post-Gutenberg era.

Haidt shows a confidence in his causitive explanations that I don't share, even when I find them the most plausible on offer. That said... Concerns he highlights seem real and significant I'm in favor of his responses, as they seem broadly positive towards a better society with few significant downsides.

He does base them on studies. But, of course, in social sciences we don’t get studies that provide the same confidence levels as the hard sciences.

@@vivienneb6199 You’re talking to a guy who did science all his life and advanced statistical analysis was a big component of my work. Yes, I trust polls and studies if they are done correctly. All scientific research involves sampling. Jheez. Obviously, correlation does not necessitate causation. They didn’t just look at one set of numbers. They interviewed teens. They looked at other likely factors that could have led to a huge increase in anxiety and self harm at that point in time. They did a lot of due diligence to rule things out. It wasn’t one study at one point in time or in one country. And what they found was that teen girls were disproportionately influenced by social media in often harmful ways. As for the coddling… if you’re as old as me, then that is self evident. Kids are protected from feeling they failed in sports. Kids aren’t allowed to take risks and get a few cuts and bruises, play outdoors on their own with friends or even walk to school alone. We never had the traffic chaos of parents dropping off and picking up their kids from school. This all begun after people got scared from hearing salacious news stories of child abductions, satanic cults and such. And that began when we started to have 24/7 news coverage of every incident anywhere in the country. The funny thing is that crime rate stats show that we had much higher crime rates in the 70’s-90’s than we have now. But perception is everything so everyone is fearful.

Misalignment of genuine Concerns for gen z is the theme, a special teaching topic that is likely to be typical of the usual stress between grandparents and parents policies on child rearing. So policies derived from current conditions that have superceded historical events in evidence is why we argue with each other's presumptions toward the common good.

Good work. That you have to ask if anyone is offended😅. If you are offended, maybe it doesn't matter. If you are offended, get some therapy. If you want to debate and express some ideas, come forward. Weak Admin catering to the lcd of the loudest voices.

I believe he asked if anyone was offended in order to invite a challenge to his ideas.

James Lindsay and Brett Weinstein have opinions that are hardly radicalized. They are simply anti-leftist -- and both have very well-articulated reasons. Haidt allowing them to be painted with that brush buy a professor with zero commentary was very disappointing.

IF I were a smart young lawyer I would be assembling a class action for certification. THAT is ALL humans raised after 1995 (I say before actually) Have a class action against all parents from that time period BECAUSE of this. YOU see that computer, internet and cell phones for YOUTHS is abuse. ALL parents should have kept it away and never allowed this. The young people CURRENTLY lack any imagination and will never take care of themselves. Damages are huge a lifetime of limited income and relationships WHOA imagine the attorney fees.
