Fun fact: That piece of dialog is based on a real-life talk that David Goyer (who wrote the movie) had with his stepson. IMO that kinda adds to the emotion of the line because it’s a fictional interaction but it came from a place that was very real.

@Pxer I was adopted from Peru which might as well have been another planet from where I went, staten island new york. If you are adopted all you want is the acceptance and love of the people who adopted you. You want to feel like you are theirs because all you know is that your biological parents gave you up. This goes back to abandonment issues.

@EvilSapphireR which is an answer. And a good one. His planet exploded because of the laxity and abuse of his people. Knowing how they failed alongside what he is capable of being, that's a good motive to be good. Conversely, it could have been an invasion pod like the sayains in dbz and he's been sent to destroy them, but if he knows why, he can make rhe decision. Right out of "Superman: Earth One" and "Superman: Secret Origin". That aside, the scene was very well-done and emotional. I love how Jonathan doesn't give naïve, black-and-white advice just to soothe his young son. He tells him straight up that nothing is that simple or cut-and-dried. That there is a bigger picture. Like all parents, the Kents put their child above others despite their status as good people. So many people just don't understand this film. Or the comics...

There it is- you can't say yes or no. He obviously can't tell Clark not to save the bus, but he also can't tell Clark to save the bus. Many are arguing that Jonathan should have said, "Yes, you should have saved the bus, but..." But what? Any child at that age is going to take it as a challenge. "But people will freak out if they see you with powers." --> "then I'll do it without anyone seeing." What could you possibly say after that to get your point across??

It's not a crime to tell your child that they're adopted, it's just immoral however to tell them that they aren't your child. Family goes beyond blood, Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent portrayed it by raising an alien as their own child without ever once betraying his faith in them. Even when Clark himself in his late teens (rebellious faze) told Jonathan that he wasn't his real father, his human parents never once said that he wasn't their son. Clark only understood this later on after traveling around the world & meeting his Kryptonian parents. I grew up without the presence of my father and had no siblings, but i found them in my grandfather and cousins. Clark definitely had it worse than most being the sole Kryptonian on a planet where he's basically a god, however he was adopted by 2 wonderful people. If you ever watched the Flashpoint Paradox Movie, you would see what would have happened to him had he been found by anyone else. It's one of the saddest Superman backstories in history.

01:00 this is an extremely hard question to anwser, i was never a fan of superman until this movie came out and now i realize how interesting this character can be. Jonathan doesn't know the anwser because he doesn't know how it is to have powers like this: how do you teach things to a teeneger with god like powers? This movie made me read superman comics and i can tell that the conflict of clark having god like powers is such a big issue, he could easily become a dictator if he wanted to. There are comics were you get to wonder if people of earth really deserve superman; and one of his villains, lex luthor tells the paradox of having someone like clark in the world. It is not as easy as it seems. In this scene clark ask for his father to tell him what to do but when you get older you get to understand that life is not as easy as it seems. Nobody can tell you what to do. Clark needs to learn to use his powers and to not abuse them and he needs to learn how the world works because is hard. He needs to be wise and humble.

And Jor-El’s statement as well. “They will race behind you, they will stumble, they will fall. But in time, they will join in the Sun...” Citizens of the world were getting so caught up being so focused on Superman, whether for better or worse. For the worse part, humans became to threatened by him until they finally failed to understand him as what he really was and what he was just trying to do. And as for that consequence, he died sacrificing himself just to protect others. And by that, ppl finally came to realize that he was actually just a man who was just trying to do the right thing. I swear to God Zack delivered literally every last premise that he gave to us in the earlier movie and all of these are actually connected.

Edgy Veggie The “different take on the character” may have something to do with the fact that Superman the character has been getting totally overrun by Batman over the last 35 years. (And that’s just among DC characters.) In the early 1980s Superman was the No. 1 character of DC, by light years - it wasn’t close. They made 4 Superman movies, the last two relative duds, before they even tried a Batman movie.

clark's secret isnt more important than a human life? u must have never seen what happened to superman in flashpoint paradox. thats what could have happened if clark exposed his powers too much to the world. jonathan is simply torn between being a good man n a good father. as a good man, he knows he shouldnt tell clark to let people die. but as a good father, he also knows that if clark is exposed to the world, everyone would freak out, especially governments n shit. clark's safety would be compromised, especially when clark is vulnerable as a kid at this point. u can see the example here in clark's friend's mother, thinking clark is the next jesus n some shit. hell, what jonathan feared actually happened in bvs. some r afraid of clark, some think of him as something he isnt, some think of what he could do if he bypassed laws n politics, some want him gone from earth, etc. everyone freaked out. if jonathan said what u want him to say, that would make him a good man but a shitty father.

@@amazo88 that's the point, everything you considered yet superman wouldn hesitate for a second to save someones life. But those values steem from him growing up at the Kents farm. This is why its important for Jonathan Kent to have those absolute values that wouldn let him hesitate in such a situation. Why would superman become superman in the first place if it weren't for those values. Imagine if they killed the core values of a certain idealistic MCU hero. Its what draws people to Captain america and allows for better conflict potential with batman based on their views on heroism: *encouraging & inspiring people vs striking fear into the hearts of criminals* That's the adaptation i'm looking for

I always saw the, “I don’t know, maybe” part as humanizing Jonathan Kent. As good as a man as he is he’s still human who doesn’t have all the answers. I agree they could have written it in a better light, but I thought it came across clearly. As an average human he believes what Clark did was right, but as a father who is concerned for his son, he also sees the consequences of what could happen if his powers are discovered. It’s a complicated situation and I think this scene was meant to show Jonathan admitting to his son that he doesn’t have all the answers. I also felt that Jonathan Kent sacrificing himself wasn’t to prevent humanity from seeing what Clark could do, but to make sure Clark would be ready to reveal himself to the world when he’s had experience. Is it the best Superman movie? To me, no; but I still think it’s a great film that is underrated. I feel like I remember the critics and rotten tomatoes score for Man of Steel actually being pretty good until Batman v Superman came out and then that when I feel like I started seeing all the hate on this film.

Very similar to the humans in this movie and its extension in BvS. How fascinating right? People only knew who/how superman was. They didn't know what made him superman. And this is the piece of information this movie is giving us. I feel this superior to any other iteration of Superman. It had the most convincing character development in Clark kent and Superman. This superman is not just only for America/Metropolis to put their faith in, but for the whole world. At least thats what i felt MoS and BvS did better than any other version.

It’s up and down occasionally. One minute it explores Superman really well despite some setbacks, next they overindulge in the Zod thing. I think it was good film but it wasn’t smooth sailing. I would love the build up to him finally flying and learning where he comes from to further find his purpose. Then that development halts when he still doesn’t trust the humans and needs a priest to encourage him to take the leap of faith (by that part he should have taken the leap of faith without the priest encouraging him). Objectively can I say this movie is great? No. But as a bias superman fan, this was a good experience. A little needlessly long but good

And then he proceeds with his sentence and you realize it was an open ended statement. But then you also realize he's a father. And that speaks to you no a different level... because at some points fathers will be willing to burn down everything, kill who he has to kill, let people die if it comes to it, for the safety of his son. @@jorgemaldonado3758 No. This is more emotional and has more depth than any other. I cant name a better superhero movie better than this besides spiderman 1/2, batman begins and dark knight, infinity war, and maybe black panther. I think it surpasses everything else, especially non-crossover movies.

They picked the absolute best young man to play the part of young Clark. He's so precious as a young boy turn over what's the best thing to do for everyone. Plus he looks so much like grown Henry Cavill.

Man of Steel was so goddamn underrated and belittled for no reason. The Dark Knight trilogy and Man of Steel are both gold standard of comic book films and true art films.
