Today we're taking a first look at the Miltech Simulations Bell/Boeing MV-22B Osprey in Microsoft Flight Simulator. We're taking it for a test flight from China Lake, and will see how it goes!

The destroyed helipad was at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. THe V-22 was one of the ones based at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk. You often see them flying around that area. And yes, both rotors run on one engine - a safety measure.

I can attest to the powerful rotor downwash. I am a marshaller at my international airport, and we get Ospreys quite a bit. When marshaling one in from a hover, it is like being in a hurricane. It takes effort to stand upright until it lands right in front of you. And the exhaust will burn any grass that is anywhere near the nozzles. And yes, the engines are coupled so one drives both rotors.

Great video - what a mish-mash of an aircraft, a real hybrid. Where I live, near SkegVegas, we see a pair of these heading north every few weeks. We never see them heading back. I'm assuming they are based at Mildenhall. I hadn't realised what a complex machine it was.

Jon, occasionally I rotate the detent stops on the bottom of the thrustmaster quadrant. 2 little screws for each. Get a smooth travel after that.

I bought this aircraft after it came out and I'd dearly love to be able to fly it. All I've managed to do is reliably convert it into an abstract lawn ornament. Shame really.

12:00 both rotors spinning on one engine IS actually real world accurate; they are linked through the wing by a drivetrain, however I don't believe it can fly on one engine. The fact that the wing and rotors can rotate and stow, yet the drivetrains are linked is mindblowing though. The engineering on this thing is absurd.

Jon, the engines are coupled together on the real one, so an engine failure doesn't mean DOOM.

my problem is that skydolly (the replay tool) doesnt register the nacelle rotation. Tried to make some vids but it was weird cause i had to control the nacelles while filming.

I bet they have to both rotate off one engine. Because if an engine quit it would be a disaster of a roll over.

If you thought one engine powered one rotor then did you even consider what would happen if one failed? I mean common sense will tell you that literally EVERY multirotor manned helicopter has some kind of gearbox that powers both rotors from either engine. The most recent CV-22 crash shows you what happens when one rotor system has no power (gearbox failure).

Can you do (or point to one) a video on how you can use an Xbox controller to use as a drone camera. Thx and ty for the video. Need to revisit the Osprey. Been a while.

A wired USB XBox controller (on PC) is preconfigured to control the drone camera - with the sticks controlling translation and rotation, and the triggers controlling altitude. I have re-mapped the up/down D-Pad buttons to increase and decrease the speed of the drone camera.

@@jonbeckett Jonathan, I'm happy to report that I've been able to configure my Xbox Series X wireless controller to act as my drone controller. It has given me much greater access to aircraft details not possible before as well as greater flexibility. Configured my D-pad as yours and it works wonderfully. I also configured my A, Y, and B buttons to toggle between cockpit, drone and exterior views respectively. I'm one happy camper tonight. Thanks in large part to you. Cheers.

this one is a pass for me. simulation isn't deep enough, that wind noise in cruise mode doesn't seem realistic either, miltech did much better with the chinook. another thing: when talking about how much the Osprey cost, one must also mention all the pilots it killed

There are over 400 Ospreys in service. There have been 16 crashes, causing 62 fatalities. You do realise stats can be bent any which way you want? Take U2s for example. 104 were built, and there have been 100 crashes - resulting in 25 U2s left (after rebuilds). Just over 2500 Starfighters were built. Over 1,000 have been lost in crashes (so far).

Typical FUD spread by the internet. There was an accident in 2023. It was cleared for flight again in March 2024. Not a death trap at all.
