I think After Hours can be interpreted as The Weeknd's 'Igor,' conceptually at least on certain levels. Like Tyler, Abel is playing a character, mostly based on himself, navigating his love interests. I would say that Igor has a fairly smoother arc in its story, almost like the 5 stages of denial of his break up, where on After Hours it seems like The Weeknd fluctuates from needing his certain someone on tracks like In Your Eyes, Save Your Tears, After Hours, to more of his old "Mr Misogyny" self on Heartless, Snow Child, Escape From LA, which also are sonically reminiscent to past Weeknd songs/projects. The beginning of After Hours, however, features Abel accepting the end of the relationship, apologizing for his selfish behavior, and wishing his ex on to be positive without him. Abel tells his former lover that it's 'Too Late' and owns up to his faults as a partner on 'Hardest to Love.' 'Scared to Live' is Abel's encouraging farewell letter. What is interesting about the arc of After Hours is that it begins with Abel being ok but apologetic for the split, to being unable to live without his ex. Where 'Igor' starts with Tyler begging his partner to stay, then they are gone and Tyler must accept that, and ends with Tyler asking to be friends again. It's also important to note that 'Igor' is sonically consistent throughout the project. Clearly Abel is creating a sound on After Hours heavily inspired by 80s synths and such but, it comes and goes to certain degrees. And the degree to which the 80s sound is present is conceptually significant. 'Too Late,' 'Hardest to Love,' and 'Scared to Live' all feature the 80s sound and all three songs as mentioned are conveying acceptance and apologizing for the breakup. Then the shift to 'Snowchild' is a quite abrupt one and Abel is now talking about his rise to fame and financial success on a more "traditional" Weeknd type beat. Same goes for 'Escape from LA' and 'Heartless' on the Mr Misogyny vibes. 'Faith' is the keystone track on the album in my opinion, it's the transition point. It definitely features 80s inspired production again but doesn't lose some of the staple Weeknd darkness we all itch for. And content wise Abel is "losing his faith" and ending up in the back of "flashing cars." It's a mix of both sounds which reflects the state of crisis he's in, realizing he needs his love back. And then the album returns fully to 80s vibes on the next 3 tracks. The title track is interesting though because it really isn't that 80s at all, but is arguably the clearest declaration of Abel's need for his ex. Maybe it's because Abel cannot sustain his new apologetic, and clear minded self for too long without his love, that he is bound to be his old self without her, he will 'bleed out' back to his old ways. Shit, didn't think this idea would become an essay haha, but fuck it im quarantined, bored, and just listening to music non stop so I really have no other use for my time. To wrap it up though both 'Igor' and 'After Hours' are fantastic albums in my opinion. They sound great and posses a lot of meaning. Personally I prefer 'Igor' because Tyler's musical motifs and concepts are so mind blowingly though out, and bc it defies genres, and my personal taste aligns better with his sound. No disrespect to Abel though, what he's done with 'After Hours' is incredible as well. I'm so glad that with a voice like his, he has made sure to refine his own sound and create meaningful music that isn't selling out to labels or trends. Plus the title track is so FUCKING good and will never not get me out of my chair to slaughter the dance floor. Phew, glad that's off my chest haha, hope you see this @Jon Denton !! Appreciate all your thoughts on music

Honestly in my personal opinion, I think this entire video isn't really real. It's what the girl is thinking of in her head (hence, "in YOUR eyes" not "in MY eyes"). I think this is trying to show that she still thinks of him, he is always stuck in her head, and that's all she keeps seeing in her eyes and she can't escape him in her mind. When she decapitated him and danced with his head, to me that symbolizes her finally breaking free of him and when she dances with a part of him she is essentially celebrating that he won't be haunting her anymore. I may be looking too deep into this, but honestly it just makes sense.

*A lot of people tie his vocal ability and tone to that of my favorite artist Michael Jackson and I agree to some degree. MJ was ahead of his time and didn’t want to make your standard music video. I saw a really cool interpretation on the official video (so this isn't actually mine but thought i'd share it) and i can definitely see it: The girl lacks self awareness . She tries to have fun on the outside (Partying etc.) but on the inside she has insecurities which Abel represent in the video. She keeps running away from the insecurities instead of facing them, but they haunt her wherever she tries to go and whatever she tries to do. This makes a lot of sense with the lyrics too. Finally she decided to face her insecurities and defeats them (chops Abels' head off) after which she can enjoy life and dance in a crowd of people with her insecurities on full display, but she doesnt mind anymore. She's happy

The video i think is abt the girl overcoming her emotions over the Weekend. You see in the first scene , she was arguing with this dude. Basically, her new relationships aren’t working because she still hasn’t gotten over him. And he ( the Weekend) was also running around smashing other females even though he still loves her. he ( the weekend ) actually help her overcome at the end because he wants her to move on and be happy . The crazy dance at the end with the head basically shows she had finally overcome. That’s what I got from it. The weekend is so deep.

Based on the lyrics it seems like he loves her, and he knows she's the only one that cared about him despite her personal problems (you always tried to hide the pain, you always just know what to say) but he's so oblivious about it (I just kept look the other way, I'm blind, I'm blind) and the way he sings that part emphasizes his emotion strongly, like he's definitely regretting it. Maybe in the past she loves him and she did everything to show that she cares for him (lyrics: I see there's something burning inside you) but he kept trying to find love from someone else (lyrics after the first chorus). As time passes while both of them separate each other in their own path of life, he suddenly makes a return by murdering her partner or whoever that is with her, and she's terrified and run to save her life. Turns out he was stalking her the entire time (scene on the first chorus) and when she's looking at him at the dance floor, it seems like her stare emphasize some strong memory with him (my theory is that maybe he changed his appearance so that's why she couldn't recognize here first and thought he was some random murderer, but now she recognizes him). But that doesn't affect her mind that he is still a dangerous criminal. So when she ran to the backstage or something and eventually managed cut his head off, it seems to me that he doesn't want to fight and just let her kill him. Maybe because he think that it is already impossible to amend with her like back in the days to express his feelings and get together again, and is too depressed to continue living his life anymore since his heart was already too broken about his attempt to find love on someone else (lyrics: I won't regret, 'cause my heart can't take a loss). So with that hurtful feelings, he propagates it by killing people, maybe he previously already killed those that he claimed want to find love with, and now he eventually came back to her to end his last purpose: to get back to her by killing himself with having her to end his life. Because deep down inside, he knows... That she will keep him "In Her Eyes".

This is in many ways a modern Thriller .. it’s this weird slasher type mini horror flick with a bouncy pop bop backdrop. I am a big horror fan and I can tell you some of the images /details in this video pay homage to classic horror films the woman grabbing the axe is a horror trope in films like the shining .. the way The Weeknd slowly methodically stalks her is like Michael Myers in Halloween., the way the woman is swinging the axe in the sunlight is almost spot on to a scene from Texas Chain Saw Massacre .. so it’s really interesting the way he plays with/mingled all these classic horror visuals and like you said the juxtaposition of the images and the upbeat /dance groove sounds it’s just stunning and brilliant. I don’t know exactly where the story goes next but I’m Assuming this character/killer that Abel is portraying will supernaturally come back to life as the horror icons always do and we will continue with this dark trippy journey. The Weeknd is doing something legendary with all this. He is undoubtedly the King 👑 of this musical era.
