I almost started bawling when I heard the line “she was sleeping in your clothes, but now she’s gotta get to class”. It breaks my heart to see underage girls and boys being taken advantage of by people in power or just legal aged people that go after younger people cuz they’re “easier to manipulate”. The amount of friends I had being treated like this..
@dabordietrying
@dabordietrying 3 жыл бұрын
right, that line hits so much harder once the rest of the song is like "revealed" in a way if that makes sense. when i realized she said "and you swear you didnt know, you said you thought she was your age" my jaw fully dropped

She said in an Instagram post that this song was really hard for her to release as it was so vulnerable. She also mentioned how this song was based on personal experience and also what she has witnessed so sadly I do think it talks a bit about what she has went through. She was with an older man while she was 16-17 who seemed to not care as much about her. Great reaction!

the whole ''less is more'' idea jon talked about at the end is SOO true. if you're an artist you'd understand how difficult it is to 'not go all out', especially as talented people like bil and finneas they have insane skills and abilites to flaunt but they gave this song its boundaries ,in terms of instrumentals etc, so we can appreciate other aspects of it, and putting boundaries to your project is the hardest thing a musician can do

My interpretation is that there are different examples of power imbalance throughout the song. She starts out about a young relationship that destroyed a girl of school age, moves on to a personal experience, and then a situation in which someone was engaging with someone underage, only caring when they find out they’ve lost their power. I believe she’s trying to create dialogue about power imbalance as a whole, and trying to empower others through it.

If you’ve watched her movie, her ex boyfriend (named 7) met her when she was around 16-17, was much older than her, and was depicted as the “bad guy” who mentally abused her.
@soundslike1life
@soundslike1life 3 жыл бұрын
The more I listen to this, the more it hits me. I'm a guy and I went through this, as an adult, just few years ago. A man few years older than me in fact abused his power. He completely wrecked me and my life. I'm still trying to recover from it. While this song is obviously about a relationship where the abused one is underage, this happens in relationships all the time, adult/adult relationships. Unfortunately it doesn't need to be an underage child for it to be this way. It can happen to anyone, at any age. All I can say is, if you can help it, don't let it happen to you. Easier said than done because most people will blind themselves out of loving someone, and that is all that the abuser needs to do the damage - and you only find out when you hit the bottom, and it's a long painful climb to get your power back.

Yes she’s talking about someone specific (Q, a rapper from LA, her ex), but even when she is, it’s usually more of a starting point artistically. Like you said, she tells a story, it’s a character, the artistic point made through personal experience but also likely what she has witnessed happen to others (including, like you said, as part of the metoo movement), but also to her friends and family.

My opinion the song isn’t about a relationship at all, it’s about the industry and it’s effect on a young artist. The lines “She was sleeping in your clothes, but now she’s gotta get to class” could represent how people have to change and maybe dress a certain way to appeal to a wider audience, but then this lifestyle is at the same time distracting from a normal way of growing as a human (the class/school part)

Hey Jon, can't you try to put the music video behind you on the green screen with the little blur? That'd help us relate and you might not get blocked maybe, I'm not sure. Just a suggestion. :) Also this was fast af.

Very Somber...It's a mixed song about her past and what's going on in the world today all the way to George Floyd.

Yeah. It isn't only about her ex, or just the music world. It can be anything where someone has power and abuse it.

@@telepathy4509 yeah its definitely wasn't written for james specifically. Maybe just all the accusations that have been flying about a bunch of pedos. It for sure could be her ex though, he probably falls under that category.
