Hi, I'm trying to find out what oil goes in the sump of these 540's.

Hi, I would like to connect my 540 to VFD too. I run it off a Transwave converter, is there any problems to change to a VFD ie, two motors from one VFD and are the motors in delta which the instructions say. thank you Patrick

Hi, my current setup uses a single VFD, however, I run into issues with the contactors tripping it into an error. My plan is to use two smaller VFDs, one for each motor. Then remove the contactors and drive them directly and use the VFD start/stop functions.

@m0xya thank you for your replay. My other machine motors had to be changed from star to delta maybe that's what you need.

I've carried out nut and bolt rebuilds of two 540s over the last 2 years. Both from the 50s. I was going to comment on the pipes are drain pipes. The end caps of both X and Y should end up with oil in them. If they dont you have a blockage somewhere. The entire hydraulics are managed through the large block of metal all the controls are on. Also run both motors for 5-10 minutes before using the machine. This gives the oil time to pressurise and lubricate the ways. If your motor start electrics are anything like mine you should replace them asap. They are just dangerous. Just use basic DOL starters. Finally I notice your 540 is sitting on a concrete floor. It will not be stable and your 540 will rock as the table goes back of forth. This will effect your surface finish. There are 3 holes in the base casting where you can put lifting bolts. I didnt bother I just put a 40mm x 10mm disc under each. This was enough to provide the tripod effect and make it so it doesnt wobble. Doesnt seem to matter thats is not level. At least its stable. I could not feel mine rocking. It was original light swaying in time with the table that got me wondering

Many thanks for the detailed comment. Yeah, it was only after my upload that I realised the pipes I replaced were for drainage. Also, totally agree about the ways being lubricated, I do think there is a blockage somewhere. It will require investigation before I next use it. I redid the wiring as it was totally rotten, agree, a total deathtrap! Will also do as you suggested re. the tripod mounts. It was only sat in a temporary position when I made the video. Will be moving it to a permanent position soon.

Those copper oil lines are drains. not feeds to the ways.

Hi, yes thanks for the reply. when editing the video I realised my mistake. I was going to do an update soon as I have several other bits to do on it. Are you familiar with the 540? I assume the hydraulics feed is from below via the saddle? I suspect I'll have to strip it down to give it a better clean..

@@m0xya Not overly familiar, i bought one the year before last and have being rebuilding it during the lockdown. Had to replace the bronze nut and handwheel spindle as mine was worn out. Decided to repaint the machine seeing as i had it in pieces, new spindle bearings, motor bearings, drive belt, Motor mounts. Parts are reasonably cheap, and its stupid not to renew them when the machine is dismantled. The crossfeed ways are lubricated from the oil draining down from above, only the table ways are pressure lubricated i think.

I may pick your brains in the not too distant future... Assuming you don't mind?

@@m0xya If you join the migwelding forum, i'm on there and some other people much more knowledgeable than, including people who are machinetool rebuilders etc, its not just welding at all.
