As already noted the checkerboard finish is because you haven't balanced the wheel before dressing, Love the old J&S's ! The spring cut you referred to is what we call 'Sparking Out', keep up the good work!

Love it. You have a great way of explaining things.... Once your wheel is dressed it's best to leave it running as it will need dressing before grinding again if stopped. Speed up the table a bit and more of an overlap of the workpiece tho and use depth of cuts of between 0..01/0.02mm and steps across of around 0.7/0.8mm .. go from there depending on material and what you are seeing on the surface finish. 👍😁

Great video! When will there be a video of the beautiful Seven sat in the background?

Cheers Josh. I'm not sure to be honest. There are a few jobs to do on her that are worth making a video off. Problem is I don't have any of the stuff to do them at the moment. I'm also struggling for space as you know. I need to make a new set of front arches; one err .. came off.. a few days ago. I'd like to do a full cage at some point but want to bent the tubes myself so I'll need to make a rotary bender first that is able to bend 50x2 tube. I'd also like to do a removable hard top but need a lot more space for that. So it's in the pipeline but not imminent. Glad you enjoyed the video 👍

Great video. Are You planning to restore this surface grinder?
@Handmadeextreme
@Handmadeextreme 4 жыл бұрын
At some point yes. There a few known issues with the machine that need to be rectified. The spindle bushings are in need of replacement / repair which should be quite an interesting project on it's own. There are a few bits missing as well. I'm hoping to move to a bigger workshop soon and plan to restore the grinder, the mill and the lathe once I have the space. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it.

Watrching a year later, wondering if you've worked out that there's a rocker missing from the side of it that knocks the Y feed off.

I assume you are referring to the piece that goes in the centre of the grinding wheel? If so I got mine from Jubilee Machine Tools in Derby, England, UK. Just be aware there are two different sizes depending what country your machine was made in. Hope that helps.

You need to move the work past the wheel a bit quicker and with less step over. If you don't the wheel rubs and you get burning. Where are you buying your spares for this machine ?

I love comments like this. Thanks for the tips! I'm a total beginner when it comes to surface grinding so that's really helpful. I got the wheel adaptor from Jubilee Machine Tools in Derby (UK) £165 inc VAT and Postage. The wheel came from Midland Abrasives via Ebay ~£25 Also picked up some Velocite #3 from Ebay as well for the spindle. Hope that helps and thanks again for the tips! Cheers, Rob

Your wheel needs balancing. These older machines have long and relatively flexible spindles compared to mordern machines so balancing is a must for accuracy and good wheel life. It doesn't have to perfectly balanced but if you can feel any vibration from the wheel guard when it's running you should try to elliminate it for good results.

Greetings from Belarus city of Brest. My name is Andrey. I have the same machine. The video is very informative, thank you very much. Do you have a diagram with dimensions of the hubs , how can I get it? Please tell me the model of the hubs and where you bought it, I can't find it anywhere. I bought it on aliexpress but the wrong cone turned out to be. Thanks.

Thanks i'm glad you enjoyed the video. I don't have a diagram but I do know that the UK and US machines have different spindles. I believe there may also be a difference between machines with plain bearing and ball bearing spindles. I got my hub from a company called jubilee machine tools in Derby England UK. Sorry I can't be any more help. Good luck with your search. Thanks for watching.

Andrey, if you haven't found out yet, there were two different tapered spindles manufactured for these machines. For North America the taper was 3 inch per foot, which is a standard there amongst many grinders, and for the rest of the world the taper is 15° inclusive. Hope this helps.

Hi. if you are inexperienced withtelling if the wheel is balanced or not I would dress off 0.01 inch in 0.001inch passes and then follow up with 0.0005inch final pass going quite quickly across. If you dress is properly you shouldnt see any burn marks even without coolant. Cheers
