As an Aussie, we aren't allowed guns, bear sprays or knives, so milk crates are the main weapon. Though once a shopping trolley was used to take down a man with a knife attacking people outside a train station. I like the idea of the defence spray, does it come in other colours?

Thank you for bringing monocles back. I’ve had one for a few years now, it’s invaluable when wearing contact lenses and I need to read something. You didn’t mention that it’s compulsory to speak the words “I say!” when you put it in, preferably in a Terry-Thomas voice.
@ce_rouse2 жыл бұрын
I used to carry a monocle as a fine print reader when traveling. I also hacked a circular pill case by removing the chambered interior creating a single chamber and cushioned via glueing in thin foam within the lid and bottom case interior. The average sized monocle fits perfectly and the case is small enough to fit in the watch pocket of your jeans. Eventually I moved on from the monocle, and currently use a product called ThinOptics. It's a super thin, flexible reader that grips the bridge of your nose. It's small enough with carry case to fit in your wallet. The carry case is the size of a credit card, and about 3 or 4 credit cards thick. I still use the monocle if I dress up and want some extra style points.
@matthewbrown61632 жыл бұрын
I was given a plastic magnifying lens at a trade show & carry this in my coin pocket of my wallet. Rarely I need to use it but for the most finest print I MAY use it. Sometimes the finest print challenges the youngest eyes.
@OrangeHulk2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jon, the self-defence foam might be of minimal use against a single assailant, as you rightly indicate, but worse than useless against more, because of the time taken to properly discharge. Conversely, even a one second squirt of pepper spray can incapacitate a determined attacker, so it is dangerous to suggest there is any comparable stopping power. Alternatively, here the UK, we are limited to a brolly, a tickling stick, or a blinding flashlight. 👍
@JonGadget2 жыл бұрын
All very valid. I don't recall suggesting the paint was comparable - just better than nothing at all (or a tickling stick!)

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Start working for God, you can be stacking up treasure in heaven RN. If you are not a follow of Messiah I would recommend becoming one. Call on the name of Jesus and pray for Him to intervene in your life. This world and the things in it are temporary. Jon, The Monocle in 3.00 is $52.00 USD and shipping to the USA (standard shipping) is a crazy $52.00 USD and using the discount code only gives 5% off not 10%. Hi Charles - I asked your question and here is the feedback: The discount is correct at 10%. It doesn't discount the shipping costs which will be why he has calculated it to 5%. The shipping cost is high because we only use UPS tracked service as we stopped using Royal Mail due to many shipment errors going abroad and poor tracking internationally. We don't do a non tracked option because we have been burned with that on too many occasions internationally. I know this doesn't really help but they have had so many packages lost in the past that they will only now used tracked UPS to the USA 🙁

For lighters, can’t say enough good about the IM Corona old boy. I’ve collected lighters for decades and it’s by far the nicest soft flame butane I’ve found. Extremely well put together and every aspect is impressive apon close inspection. Have owned one for 6-7 years, use it daily and have run many cans through it. It also has a nice capacity, holding about as much as a bic, stays lit hands free and doesn’t heat up much with extended use, meaning it’ll work as an emergency candle for a few minutes if you need.

People with wives/daughters: My sister wouldn’t carry a blade for safety no matter what I got her. Buying a Pepper Spray kit on Amazon that came with an extra can that was water (to learn to practice) she’s used and actually keeps in her purse. I’ve trained her to use it and she knows to only pull it when it’s getting shot. Do not pull as a deterrent or you’ve just given up your element of surprise. I digress.. get and train your more venerable family to use OC Spray. I recommend Sabre brand CS Tear Gas. It works and can save a life. One thing.. it doesn’t spray how you’d imagine.. so get the practice shooter kit and you’re set. Sabre on Amazon sends brandy new cans with a six year shelf life.. $40 gets you four cans and can save your life so consider buying some to have around the house, car and purse.

Re: Vintage-style lighters. Have you tried a rope lighter, also called a sailor’s lighter? It uses a piece of literal rope as the fuel, instead of kerosene or butane fuel. When you light it, you get more of a smoldering ember than a flame, but it’s still good for lighting a pipe or campfire tinder or whatever. The great thing about it is that the ember simply will not blow out. It is the closest thing to totally windproof I’ve ever seen. Besides, you can pretend you’re on the deck of an old clipper ship.

WIth regards to the 'paint defence spray' My understanding is that anything intended as a weapon (regardless of if you would consider it 'defensive' or otherwise.) is iligal to carry in the UK, regardless of what it is or how effective it is, the very fact you are carrying it for the purpose of use as any kind of weapon is what makes it illigal the way the relivant UK legislation is written. The radioactive dose given off by the tritium key fob is inconsequential next to taking a long flight, living in Edinburgh (yes, the granite is radioactive), or in Cornwall (same reason). I've worked with radiation for over 20 years, and although it can be seriously harmful, there's a lot of fear around it if you don't understand it. You only need to be concerned about dose over time. High dose over a short time, or small dose over a very long time. This fob's emission means it doesn't last long enough, and your life is too short, to it to cause you any harms.

I really like all of the Braun lighters. They were made from something like 1971 until the 80s. I personally have a Mach 2 which used to be a mid tear model in Brauns lineup and can be found for about 40€ used today though there are also more expensive ones like the Linear that sell in the hundreds today. Generally I really like all of the Braun devices from that era as they didn’t just produce shavers but also speakers, calculators, watches, TVs, … and lighters because of their simplistic and bauhaus like design.

I'm curious how the radioactive gadget will survive security control on the airport 🙂 and I think you should measure those radiation levels.
@darronjknight2 жыл бұрын
Safety Tritium is a very low energy beta emitter and even large amounts of this isotope pose no external dose hazard to persons exposed. The beta radiation cannot penetrate the outer protective dead layer of the skin of the body.

@@darronjknight I'm just curious that radiation is going to be picked up at the airport for security reasons not safety.

@@merkury28 What makes you think airport security has radiation detectors? They can barely detect metal. The TSA is almost entirely useless.

Wait, so in the UK one of the main defensive tools is... what? Extra-pressurized, colored shaving foam?? That sucks. Better than nothing tho, hopefully it contains some form of irritant.

Funny, you can get those chameleon tape measures from about eight dollars upwards. I guess the expensive ones are better made but I can't see a great deal of difference from the photographs.

Originally that type of lighter is a pipe lighter because the flame can be pulled down from the bottom hole.

Wait, you can't even have pepper spray in the UK? And here I am with my gun on my belt, with tritium night sights. So I can cross off #1 and #2 at the same time. lol

The law is weird in the uk - you can carry almost anything you want with some odd knee jerk exceptions (zombie knives) and way bigger and faster firing guns than in the us. However, you need a good and specific reason for carrying them. So you can carry pepper spray, but not “just in case for self defence”, you can carry an anti-materiel rifle, but not “because it’s my right too”. I’m a wheelchair user and I used to carry a rather large knife with me. I was pulled over by the police and even though I could demonstrate that this knife was the perfect tool to fix it when it breaks down (the canopy was held on with zip ties over the motor, and you needed a knife that long to cut the zip tie to access the interior) I was told “just in case I break down was not a valid excuse (don’t worry, common sense prevailed and the officer wished me a good day when I promised to leave the knife at home in future). Now, every time I go out, I have a verifiable good excuse to carry my knife, that I can provide evidence for to any police officer who asks. And when my wheelchair breaks down, what good luck I happen to have my knife on me ;)

Self defense paint. For when you’re going to be murdered due to malicious self defense laws but you want to rest easy in your grave knowing the police might find your murderer.

You might check out Douglass Lighters they are a Japanese company. I have one of there brass lighters it is waterproof has storage for extra fuel and a flint in the bottom. I wonder about the defense paint, seems like you could suffocate or blind someone. In the U.S. it could end in a lawsuit or criminal charges even if you are the victim. At least you are less likely to be shot in your country.

@@JonGadget Found the box mine is the model Field S in brass they appear to have stopped the brass one but the Field L is available in brass. You might consider adding some vintage brass vesta cases to your collection they make good conversation pieces. I have a collection of all sorts of pocketable brass items. Brass ages so nicely and has a warmth to it.

At the beginning of "Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy", by John Le Carre, Smiley hands the lighter given to him by his unfaithful wife ("from Anne with love") to Karla who he is interviewing (unsuccessfully) to persuade him to defect to the west. Karla pockets the lighter without Smiley noticing, before Karla gets sent back to Russia where he is expected to be shot, but in fact becomes head of "Moscow centre" aka KGB. At the the end of the sequel "Smiley's People" when Karla defects to the west, because Smiley has a hold on his daughter, Karla drops the lighter on the ground near checkpoint Charlie, but Smiley doesn't pick it up... The lighter is the classic design of Ronson with a long tapered shape that I inspires nostalgia for that period of the cold war in those who are old enough to have lived through it.
