While I understand hesitancy to carry certain knives; if it's legal we should. Seeing people use a folder for regular tasks normalizes knife carry. It sends a message that an EDC knife is a tool not a weapon. I was carrying a Spyderco Delica here in the US until I lost it. I plan on getting another one because it's such a great tool.

Really enjoyed the video. I own thirty Spyderco knives, bought over the years before they really went up in price. Most have to stay home as they have locking blades, however I do have some of the slip joint variants. While I like them, they feel like a diluted version of the real thing and the tactical look could arouse suspicion. For UK EDC I will always go for a mid size SAK, I am more confident of the blade retention during use and they are much cheaper. Footnote:- Before the laws were changed I used to EDC a Spyderco Delica.

I had the standard UKPK and thought that was good until I bought this Heinnie Haynes edition of the Spyderco UKPK. This one is just so much better. Full back spacer and 4 screws unlike the standard 3 screw UKPK. The one I had locks so tightly it's amazing. With the better steel there is just no reason to buy the standard one here in the UK. Thanks for the video.

Great video Jon. I do have a soft spot for Spyderco and have a few all bought before the knife laws tightened. They are housebound only but I like to fidget with them and just like the tactile nature of them and the engineering and aesthetic. The knife laws are a bit stupid to me as a lot of knife crime is comitted with large kitchen knives or machete type blades. Just shows we can't have nice things.

UKPK is a good choice for many, who want to carry a truly UK legal pen knife. Many alternitives that might be seen as better. You can own a locking knife but you can't carry it in a public place without very good reason. So, they're fine at home or your own land. The reason for the ban was knee-jerk legislation from politicians due to rising street knife-crime, which continued to rise anyway
@ComUnSas3 жыл бұрын
Originally, the law was going to ban *all* knives in public places until someone pointed out that would potentially criminalise the large number of people who own Swiss army knives. So, an exemption was written in for non-locking knives less than 3 inches long
@ComUnSas3 жыл бұрын
Oh, and your own motor vehicle counts as a public place
@marmite89593 жыл бұрын
It is a bit ridiculous. I read somewhere that the law wasn't initially meant to criminalise lock knives, only fixed blades and "offensive weapons" (switchblades, balisongs, non-ornamental swords, every niche weapon ever used in a ninja movie etc.) but a judge ruled in a court case that a lock knife doesn't count as a folding knife and here we are. I'm not a police officer and I've never been in a street gang so I don't know personally but I'd imagine the vast majority of stabbings are done with cheap kitchen knives and garden tools and maybe the odd cheap imported lockknife or switchblade here and there maybe. I'd be very surprised if anyone's ever killed someone with a Leatherman Wave or a Benchmade 940 in this country.

Spyderco makes some great knives. I didn't realize it but apparently I am guilty of taking certain freedoms for granted here in the USA. @@JonGadget in the USA there is such a messy patchwork of laws. Each county, municipality, us state can have their own laws, so you will never know what is legal and what not in one place or another. Also you can get arrested and handcuffed if you are drinking a beer in a park or on a bench in a public street and you have no ID card on you. Moreover sentences are crazy long. A school teacher, Brittany Zamora, got sentenced to 20 years in prison for having sex with an underage male student. In most EU states people don’t get 20 years for homicide. @@JonGadget Laws in the USA are a patchwork of bureaucracy. So called "gravity knives" have been illegal in New York State for years, then since they are useful to some workers, they were made legal. But they are still illegal in New York City (where I live). A woman from Texas or some other state was visiting the 9-11 memorial in NYC and going through security she declared the gun she was carrying. It is illegal in NYC to carry/transport guns and she was arrested. It means that in the USA what is legal ins one town is illegal a few miles away. I think it’s terribly sad how many people now see carrying a pocket knife as suspicious, strange or scary. It wasn’t long ago at all that it was so common place, no one thought twice. Even schoolboys would carry penknives! This is the kind of tragic situation that comes from the news holding a magnifying glass over crimes involving knives, which conditions people to respond with fear to the most common tool throughout human history. The stupidest thing of all is that those who are already willing to use a knife for criminal purposes are hardly going to care about a lesser law about not carrying certain knives 🙄. So in reality it’s the ordinary, non-criminal people like you and I that are punished by these irrational ‘laws’.
