Joni--a poet who paints with words. Her songs take you to places you never expected or dared to go.

Little Green can make you cry. It’s about her baby daughter who she had when she was young and adopted by someone. She found her decades ago so I’m happy that she did.

Blue was named the 4th best album ever recorded by the periodicals of that time, I think back then Rolling Stone magazine was our periodical of choice for most artists in this industry.

Thanks Saeed. Joni’s music is a big part of the soundtrack of my youth. I listened to many, many genres and still do. But I’m not sure we’ll be blessed with another artist like Joni. At least not is my lifetime. ☮️

"Blue" is a lullaby written in answer to James Taylor's lullaby to her, "You Can Close Your Eyes." She is refusing to "close her eyes" to his addiction. The song expresses sadness, but it also expresses concern that the man she loves "make it through these waves." To say that "Blue" is about depression simply ignores the lines referencing a love relationship threatened by outside forces, and the ultimatum at the beginning: "Crown and anchor me, or let me sail away." Sometimes a sea shell is just a sea shell, a souvenir of a good but troubling relationship that may soon come to an end. It's one of her greatest lyrics.

Joni Mitchell was a huge influence in my college years, which were at the time she was writing her most iconic songs. I found myself writing poetry similar in style to hers, and her imagery affected my prose writing as well. A favorite role model for me.

Great song and reaction. I think in this song, Joni is directly addressing her feelings of depression and trying to find her way through. Tellingly, the final piano chords descend downward in a sinking fashion, until she hits that final devastating chord. Brilliant, and I am so here for it. In your exploration of the Blue album, I recommend the more joyous but homesick “California”, and in particular the live version from BBC where you’ll see her play the mountain dulcimer on her lap.

Here's another female artist to give a listen, if interested. "Hellen Reddy - Angie Baby (1974)" (by the channel: NVNCBL) --In the 70's this little lady placed 15 singles, on the Top 40 of the "Billboard Hot 100...Six made the "Top 10" and three reached one #1. Hellen Reddy was an Australian-American singer, actress and television host. She had a remarkable career that spanned across four decades...and lots of great tunes to explore, in future. I enjoyed rocking with you. Thanks for sharing. peace out~
