My sister is in the hospital right now with end stage cancer. They have her heavily medicated due to the horrific pain that she is suffering. The medication has her dreaming most all of the time now and she talks in her sleep about things that don't make a lot of sense to the rest of us in the room at her bedside. I like to think that she is dreaming of all of the good and wonderous things that our minds can imagine. This beautiful song with Joni's angelic voice sums this up perfectly for me. I hope that my sister is seeing all of the peaceful beauty, while I am seeing all of the pain for her. I'll never be able to hear this song again without thinking of my sister and her brave fight.

This is a post that I made in relation to her concert tribute version of this song in 2000. I hope everyone has seen that performance as well. About 50 years ago a group of friends and myself went out on a Friday night to Phil's Steak and Pancake House located at the Chinook Shopping Centre on MacLeod Trail in Calgary. They had live entertainment every weekend and on that particular night there was a shy young girl (a student at Mount Royal College) by the name of Joan Anderson who was our entertainment for the night. She mesmerized us all with her music and she still has that effect upon me today. Although she did not perform this song (I don't think she had written it yet) when it came out on her Clouds album I just fell in love with it. To hear her sing the same song almost half a century later and appreciate the lyrics which now have seriously different meanings is breath taking. I am an old man and do not feel ashamed at all to cry every time I watch this.

Joni Mitchell is an amazing artist -- musician and song writer and performer. The legacy of recorded music she has given us is remarkable! Having grown up in LA and having the opportunity to see her perform live is indelible! I was working as a waiter in 1976 at a restaurant near where she recorded and she frequented often for lunch and she knew I knew who she was and I never fawned over her and she respected that. She was never a DIVA. Always a great memory.

Don't underestimate what happens today. Meaning that there is a lot of beautiful things, beautiful music and people. They are now hidden in the grey clouds. I work with a young aspiring song writer and his songs have that same telling as when I was young. As a musician like all things music evolves and like then record labels have grown in media corps. Also record labels then like media now only care about substance in the form of money and not creativity. So the real artist still struggles and I see it from both sides now. Somewhere along the way we sometimes lose our identity and get swallowed in Narratives that are not our own

Somehow, I only discovered this song about a year ago, and it knocked me on my ass. I could not believe that a song of such depth and mastery had existed my entire life and I had no idea. It’s Beatles/Dylan-level songwriting, and it transports me into the ether every I hear it. It excites me to know that despite having a vast knowledge of music history, it’s still possible that one day I could again unearth another treasure like I did with “Both Sides Now.” Only music makes me feel that way.

Rows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere, I've looked at clouds that way. But now they only block the sun, They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done, But clouds got in my way. I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down and still somehow It's cloud's illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels, The dizzy dancing way that you feel As every fairy tale comes real, I've looked at love that way. But now it's just another show, You leave 'em laughing when you go And if you care, don't let them know, Don't give yourself away. I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take and still somehow It's love's illusions I recall I really don't know love at all Tears and fears and feeling proud, To say "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds, I've looked at life that way. Oh but now old friends they're acting strange, They shake their heads, they say I've changed Well something's lost, but something's gained In living every day. I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all I've looked at life from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all 😍😘😍

Most beautiful song I ever heard. My mom’s favorite song when I was a little girl.💕

This song brings back memories of a very interesting time in American history. I remember... I was raised a mere 15 miles from the White House in DC. I saw it all, the war, the protests, speeches, assassinations and the eternal flame... I was there on the mall, standing at the foot of the steps barely a teenager. Was it all in vain? Did we win, did we lose... or was it all simply in vain? John Lennon said it best... PEACE
