Joni Mitchell was interviewed while promoting her boxed set "Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, a Ballet, Waiting to Be Danced", released in 2014. The four-CD set includes Mitchell's liner notes, with her memories of the sessions and interactions. She gets grumpy about Bob Dylan and David Geffen and calls out her own songs for new criticism. "Some of my songs bug people. They hate them," she wrote.
The Joni Mitchell discussion took place in Los Angeles, CA at age 71. She is one of the most prominent musicians to come out of the legendary 1960s Laurel Canyon music scene, which included the Doors; Neil Young; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Carole King; the Eagles; and the Mamas and the Papas. Since then her music has inspired and been covered by artists including Bjork, Janet Jackson, Steely Dan, and Chaka Khan.
April 10, 2015 update: Joni Mitchell suffered a "minor medical emergency" when she was found unconscious on March 31, 2015, in her Los Angeles home and rushed to the hospital. It's still unclear what caused her to become unconscious. "Joni remains under observation in the hospital and is resting comfortably," Mitchell's site states. "We are encouraged by her progress and she continues to improve and get stronger each day."

70 years old and she still gets tens of thousands of views for her interviews. And in some cases, hundreds of thousands. Great to see.

In 71 years, she has produced more poetic music than any damn poet you can name. Any astounding life event I've felt, she felt it before me, and deeper, and catalogued it incomparably. On my best day, given endless words to her six, I could never touch the hem of her garment. And she considers herself a painter foremost. The light that burns twice as bright.

On a Friday night in 1964 in Calgary a group of friends and myself went to Phil's Steak House on MacLeod Trail in Calgary for a night out. They had live entertainment on the weekends and on that night there was a young girl by the name of Joan Anderson (a student at the Music College) who entertained us. I have never forgotten that night or that girl/woman since.

The greatest female lyricist and songwriter of our age. Her beauty and cultural sagacity are matched only by her wit and humility. My goodness, it was not easy for her.

I simply never grow weary of her music. I can hear it all the time. She got me through my teens, my twenties, my thirties, my forties, and with a sad 5 year gap, now she has been back in my sixties to guide me through. A true artist. She was a precursor to Sting's eclecticism.

At the age of 7. I got into her music. I didn't understand them, but collected her albums. At 15 I rediscovered her and understood her lyrics. My son at 15 discovered her. Now we both have the same favourite singer and songwriter. My son is now 17 and I am 62. She is the greatest gift that music ever had.
