This woman's powerful lifeforce, elegance, honesty, and talent just blaze through this entire interview. The complexity of her multi-layered psyche can't be contained within any known, standard paradigm. People like this whose spirit and talent come here from another place appear rarely in every generation. That's what people just instinctually respond to - her transcendent capacity to speak from soul to soul.

Reading the comments down below how anyone could dismiss Joni as an overrated songwriter or guitar player is just beyond me.But it really does not really matter because millions of people all over the world including many great musicians have been listening and been inspired by her music for decades now.She gets right down into people's souls and she has helped many people make sense of their own inner lives.She has touched millions with her artistry and her painting which look incredible as well although we mostly have only ever got to see what is on album covers.

I like the fact that half the people she name drops are people she grew up with. She’s certainly living up to the words of Kipling’s poem, “If”. I’ve also been a songwriter for many years but was always put off by the industry and the mercurial nature of fame. Thus, I’ve never had any success (not financially or in terms of recognition, anyway) but I’ve still enjoyed creating and continue to use art to explore life and humanity in my own way. I feel that, if I could’ve been a successful songwriter, I would’ve wanted to be so in the same spirit as Joni Mitchell. More interesting perhaps (?), I’ve also had prophetic dreams ... but that’s neither here nor there. Thanks for sharing! 🙏

I don't think I've enjoyed, laughed, or been inspired by an interview as much as I have with this. Joni Mitchell is not just an incredibly talented and rounded artist, but she is a sincere and enjoyable and highly intelligent conversationalist. But what really makes her shine is her authenticity, coupled with a wit and sense of humor that is as natural as everything else she does. Over the years I've read various interviews with her and unfortunately the written page does not do her justice. You have to experience her in conversation. The things she talks of, and her concerns for various situations in life, are serious, and she doesn't mince words. However, on the page it comes across as stern and almost hard to bear but that I see is only because there doesn't seem to a way to translate her personality, her sense of humor, and the way she doesn't seem to take herself that seriously. That is so refreshing, especially from someone of her intelligence, passion, and notoriety. I know I am probably going to say something that I'm sure has been said many times before, but I bet she would be a wonderful person to hang out with, have a couple beers with and have a serious lengthy conversation with that has many twists and turns to it. And that is rather rare these days. So, thanks Joni Mitchell for a lifetime of fantastic music and art, and thank you for your honesty and willingness to share your experiences through your music. Therein lies the true artistry. :)

To have enough musical understanding to make up your own tunings is in itself impressive. Personally I think she's one of the greatest guitar singer songwriters we have had and her music has always affected me greatly. These greats from the 70s are sadly beginning to die off now. I don't hear any similar replacements coming through. Eg Laura marling is ok but lacks the depth. Joni is also gorgeous, intelligent and classy, an incredible woman.

This did not take place at the Grammys. It took place in Saskatoon. "Joni accepts the glass, dish-like Lifetime Achievement Award from the Saskatchewan Recording Industry Association. After the presentation Joni reveals her inspiration for The Magdalene Laundries. The video takes place at The Willows Golf & Country Club in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada." Her mom and dad are in the first row. She talks to people in the audience that she knew while growing up. A lot of the questions are about growing up in Saskatoon. How anyone would think this at the Grammys is beyond me.

People around the world may not know that Saskatchewan Province, along with most of Manitoba and Alberta provinces on either side of it, is in their southern halves part of the Great Plains of North America, popularly called the "Prairies" in Canada, which is a French-Canadian word for grasslands, given by early explorers. Saskatoon and the provincial capital of Regina are located there. It is a region of huge grain farms. The northern halves of these provinces, mostly unpopulated but rich in minerals, is in the rock, forest, lake and river region called the "Shield", that is where Wakesiu Lake is, where Joni first sang at summer vacations with friends as a teen. If you go to google images for Wakesiu Lake, there is a good photo of it, the classic Canadian scene in many people's minds.

@@apocalypseplough8089 ---- I made that comment for people around the world cuz your comment is well-placed in the comment feed. I live in the BC Interior and I have never heard anyone say anything bad about the Prairies here. Ontario and Quebec are the snotty provinces in Canada.
@apocalypseplough80893 жыл бұрын
@@classicmusicarchives7370 Did you watch the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony when they inducted Joni? Margaret Atwood spoke about Joni. I was going to quote it but best to see it yourself. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXbcnpKFbryhqcU Multiply that by 10 if you're from the Prairies? Really? Margaret Atwood is giving you the Canadian stereotypical view of the Prairies. And she doesn't even realize what she is saying. Neil Young spent his formative music career in Winnipeg. Jabs like that we put up with being from the Prairies. Newfoundland is also looked down on. Maybe you're right. Maybe it's not BC, but Ontario and Quebec. But when it comes out of the mouth of someone like Margaret Atwood, someone who should know better, it's hard to take. And there are tons of Canadians who feel the same way.

@@apocalypseplough8089 ---- It comes from the mouths of people born in snobholes like Ottawa (Atwood), who look like Toronto Snotheads (Atwood) and who sound like Ontario Sneerheads (Atwood). I worked in Banff as a 20 year old in the late '70's when I was about the only Westerner there. All I heard from all the Ontario People working there was how primitive and backwards the West was (in their view) BC included. Now I will put them in their place so fast they don't know what hit them. And my view is widely held in BC and AB, I hope SK and MB too.
