@joleneloveland29425 жыл бұрын
@Hammerschlägen M yes thats exactly what I meant. Is she a classic beauty? Is she technically a beauty? Beauty is subjective. I think true beauty comes from inside to the outside, thats why i say in the heart instead of eye.
@TheBella2u5 жыл бұрын
@Hammerschlägen M No, I don't get the picture. When Joni was young she had that kind of nobility about her. The concept of physical beauty changes with the times. Very few in the spotlight are natural now, Joni was that and if you know her back story and have ever heard her speak you know she is beautiful. Never-mind her musicianship. Anyone, who doesn't understand that, has never understood true beauty. I hope you live long enough to see it. Because to go to your grave with only the understanding of the trite and superficial is simply a wasted life. Just watch the Coyote video with Dylan @ Gordon Lightfoot's house. Joni is GORGEOUS.

Romanticism and freedom. Two key elements of Joni that moved this little Cantonese boy just as he was growing into his own from a secluded, sheltered and restrictive childhood. The music opened all the doors to rock, punk, folk, country, metal, indie... And she remains the apex of a music that's become my life.. in my blood like holy wine. Thank you, Joni. This Woman saved my life !!, when I was young, confused, shy I just always felt "outside" the world around me, I was a big R&B and Motown fan then I was at a party and somebody played her version of Woodstock, WOW !!!! I already had heard the CSN version and loved it but man her original version reached into my chest and grabbed my heart, I went out and bought all her albums even though I thought "Folk" music was lame. I discovered that she wasn't just a "folk" singer she was pure magic, she put her whole soul into every song in a way I'd never heard anyone do before. When Blue came out I would sit and listen to it over and over and I couldn't believe she was so open about her innermost feelings that most of us could never even confide to a family member or closest friend yet she made beautiful timeless music out of it. Her talent transcends all normal labels of Gender, style, genre and Nationality. If you know a troubled teenager try playing some of Joni's early songs to them, it's much cheaper and better than therapy IMHO. Even Prince who was true musical genius said Joni changed his life.

Joni’s talent is….astonishing. I purchased Blue one year ago. It was the first album of hers I ever bought, and it was the beginning of a deep love and appreciation for Joni Mitchell’s singular artistry. I listen to Clouds, or Ladies of the Canyon, or Court and Spark, and then I listen to what passes for music today, and I can’t help but feel for those who will never understand how powerful words and melodies can be in the hands of a genius. Joni’s voice soars. Her humanity, and her vulnerability, are on full display. What a wonderful gift she has shared with us. I only wish that I’d started this journey many years ago. God Bless you, Joni.

I have always believed that if the power of songwriting was converted into a martial art and that Bob, Leonard, and Joni all stepped into a no holds barred, steel cage match, it would go something like this: Leonard, after hamming up his introduction from the ring announcer, taps out immediately after the opening bell, removing his fedora and bowing deeply and graciously to the remaining two combatants then leaving the arena escorted by a mysterious bombshell of a woman in a red dress who seemed to have suddenly materialized out of no nowhere. Bob seems annoyed that he even has to prove his superiority, but is clearly hesitant to approach the calm and patient Joni who is waiting in a relaxed but potent fighting stance. As the crowd becomes restless and jeering of Bob's faux approaches to engage in some real action, he finally intiates contact by pretending to adjust his bootlaces and then suddenly unleashing a clumsy, wide arching sucker punch that misses wildly to which Joni responds to with a precise combination of two crisp jabs to the nose and a straight right that stings Bob's ear as he stumbles but regains his balance. At this point Bob distances himself and then begins to make an exaggerated gesture of asphyxiation as he begins to complain to the referee that Joni is wearing a perfume or fragrance that is causing him respiratory difficulty and that he cannot continue unless she returns to the locker room to shower. At this point the crowd is boo-ing wildly as Joni is gracefully and bemusedly shrugging and proclaiming "I thought that this was going to be a rumble, man, not a beauty pageant???" At this point Bob's lawyer appears and provides the most forceful display of aggression of the match in the form of verbally lambasting the promotors for breech of contact and threatening a lawsuit and demanding a public apology be issued to his client. Bob is whisked away by an entourage into a waiting limo and Joni is declared the champion to which she responds with a tepid fist pump and an elegantly exaggerated mean mug for ring side photographers. Edit

I think it was in '73 or '74 Joni was all over the am radio with "Help Me" and "Free Man" and my friends and I hated her. Not teenage boy stuff at all. They used to play those songs 4 or 5 times an hour! Geffen making his coins! Anyway, I grew up and a friend played me "Hissing of Summer Lawns" and I was like who the fuck IS this? He had all her records and I got myself an education. Imagine diving all at once into a tidal wave of poetry and melody and soaring sometimes broken soprano that would round out again at the end of the note. When I moved to NYC, I lived in Chelsea and paid rent I couldn't afford just so I could hear that music rapping up like pipes and drums and a crystal hung in the north facing window on the off chance I would wake up to a rainbow on the wall. I burned incense and played her records till they were all scratched with clicks and hisses. Now I'm a Cali boy - ok, O.G. Joni. I'm your biggest fan. Take me as I am. Better late than never.

Fine and dandy but she's in the RRHOF and bands like Grand Funk and Deep Purple and Humble Pie aren't. They finally, after tons of pressure just inducted Hall and Oats and took so long to induct the Dave Clark Five that their long paralyzed singer, Mike Smith, and their Saxophonist Denis Payton, had already died. Screw the RRHOF. Just a Good Ol' Boy Club that are in love with their self described Power Trip. Madonna is in too? Joni is good but the only thing I really enjoyed by her was her collaboration with Pat Metheny and Jaco Pastorius and that's Jazz. The rest is just Folk Music and Pop, not Rock and Roll. @actormanic9 жыл бұрын
+popeye1250 WTF are you talking about? There are no shots of any bass player on this clip. At one point, there is Pat Metheny playing guitar in the background, while the bass is being played by none other than Jaco Pastorius, but he's not (visually) in the shot. The only other musician you get a look at in the background, is Tom Scott, who plays sax, and he didn't happen to be playing at that moment. No matter how you slice it, we're talking about musicians who are about as first rate as first rate can be. So, can you point out just where on the clip this phantom "awful" bass player is?
@hocuspocusfocusable8 жыл бұрын
+actormanic you're absolutely correct...popeye is quite vague IMO...Larry Klein was a great Bass player for her as well (not that he's pictured either...and (imo) so reminiscent of Jaco...in his style. (Although not credited...I was watching Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park this weekend, and who was there, in the band, but Pat Metheny ((one of my Guitar heroes)) )...
@actormanic8 жыл бұрын
+hocuspocusfocusable Er, ah....that was David Brown (who played with Billy Joel in the 70s) with S&G, not Pat Metheny.....David did kind of resemble Pat at that time, though....Oh, and I agree with what you said about Larry Klein. Joni would never have any slouches on stage with her. She always employed first rate musicians.

+actormanic .....looks quite a bit like Pat...even the facial expressions...I've seen him perform a few times. Pat also does a rendering of 'Sounds of Silence'... I'll take your word for it...and stand corrected
@joleneloveland29425 жыл бұрын
That short glimpse of dark haired man IS Pat Metheny. Joni did a tour in 1980, the North American Tour /Shadows and Light. I caught one of the shows. She had a dream band consisting of Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorious, Don Alias, Lyle Mays, and Michael Brecker and the Persuations. Awesome, awesome show! She toured with the L.A. Express in 1974 as her band, and the opening act. Their bass player was Max Bennett. The first time we hear Jaco with Joni is on Hejira in 1976. Then on Don Juan's Reckless Daughter in 1977. In 1979 Mingus was released. That's Jaco Pastorius on that album and he was also used on the Shadows and Light album (1980) as well as that tour. After the tour Jaco joined with the Weather Report. Larry Klein plays and tours with Joni thereafter starting on the 1983 album Wild Things Run Fast. You are probably referring to Jaco Pastorius. Jaco's style was very different and unique. He is considered a genius and ahead of his time and I love him and his extraordinary bass playing! To each his own, but if you dont like him, then you dont like him. He died tragically in 1987, i believe. Sure do miss his sound. Jaco has a son, Felix, who is following in his father's footsteps on bass and is also very very good.
