One of the greatest performance of celtic music on acoustic guitar....

I can play this note perfect. Then I listen to RT and, with a heavy sigh, go back to practice for another couple hundred hours.

Thompson is playing his 000-18 Martin. I agree that he isn't thrilled with his performance, but I sure am. DD Glad this is back up. Thanks Jon.

Richard is the KING. Did anyone else besides me think for a while that he had abnormally massive biceps in this clip, only to realize it was the slightly-flesh-colored wall behind him, lol? This tune ROCKS, Mr Thompson. Thank you for so many years of beautiful, beautiful music.

A long time favorite of mine from amongst Thompson's staple of instrumentals (along with "The Choice Wife"). BTW, the performance may not be "perfect", but a couple of what people heard as "mistakes" might actually be wow and flutter and dropouts on the videotape (probably uploaded to KZbin from a home VHS or Beta machine). I also have right channel audio only, the left ch was just tape hiss.

Though completely unrelated in style, Kirt Kirkwood of Meat Puppets is also one of my favorite guitar players. I had heard a little bit of the 'Puppets before I saw them and liked them pretty well, but when I saw them in 1986, I was in the presence of genius; some of the most amazing, wondrous and technically brilliant playing I had ever seen, by anyone anywhere.

He doesn't exactly fingerpick, he hybrid picks. Look closely, he's got a pick between his thumb and forefinger, and he uses it as kind of a cross between a thumbpick and a flatpick.

Magically entrancing. Magic evaporated with the applause though. I would have preferred a respectful meditative silence, for at least ten seconds.

Does anyone know for certain what tuning Richard is using? My guess is DADGAD. Thought possibly Dropped D but Richard plays unison notes higher up the neck at 0:56 and 1:55 on the 3rd & 2nd strings with a one fret space between his index & ring fingers (drones the open 1st too.) Definitely an altered tuning. Beautiful performance.
@briandunstan35036 жыл бұрын
Ray1965Ray a good way to find out is watch his fingers and compare to someone who is definitely playing it in dadgad , anyway it is.but you have probably worked that out by now,l.o.l.
@dingoswamphead6 жыл бұрын
Hi Ray*Ray, Richard's book Traditional Guitar Instrumentals suggests you play it in DADGAD. I usually play it in Drop D, but it sounds crap; for several reasons.

Fantastic ! ! ! ! despite the six numb nuts above not liking . Whats not to like ? Enjoy x
@briandunstan35036 жыл бұрын
Craig McTaggart my nuts are anything but numb ,first the tempo is too slow ,and second he is using a flat pick ,he's neither one or the other,but some people seem to think he's finger picking,third bending notes is not necessary with this tune,unless he's trying to imitate eric Clapton , snide remark,i know lol,

A bit too twangy for my liking, but a very good attempt at a really tricky tune, ,I'm afraid no one can play it anything as well as Davy Graham,,,
