Great lesson. Paul always asks for a show of hands at his shows for guitar players playing this song. Then he tells us we are playing it wrong. I’ve got it down now with a minor change. Thanks.

Hi John, I first must be 68 years old to learn „Blackbird“ from you. I bought the white album when I was 14 and I played my fingers bloody! I forgot this Song for year, but when you explained the semitone basspattern, everything was clear and I understood the song, now I'm practicing diligently! Your tutorial is the best and thank you for your great way of teaching! Rainer 😎👍

You actually just wrote almost verbatim what I was gonna write… except I am 63 years old … mom got me the album when I was 8 years old… Learned this song from my guitar teacher when I was 16 and now I am trying to remember and perfect it and this is the closest I’ve seen the way I was taught in the way I think Paul is playing it so thank you oh thank you oh thank you all so exciting so exciting!❤️💫🙏🎸

Yes! I've never really played fingerstyle. I've known the chords for a million years but watching all the "this is the way McCartney plays it" videos just didn't help me to get the right pattern and sound. This works! I thank you (and my niece who has me playing this at her wedding would thank you too if she knew). 😉

Hope you are doing well, I have to say this is by far the best breakdown of Black Brid song chords, etc. I have an ej160 John Lennon model acoustic guitar, I just got back into it because I wanted to play this song for a long time but like you said I didn't have the chops yet, but your video that I happened to stumble into has got me playing again. Thank you for giving me that feeling back ! Keep doing your thing and play and teach.

I believe your technique is the best way to recreate the sound of the original, and therefore the “most correct” lesson! For me you have cracked the code, amigo. That strum with the thumb instead of the index finger has unlocked it for me, way easier for me to flow that way.

Great video and almost correct. Do watch the MTV Paul McCartney Unplugged session from 1991 and the camera does a great extended close up of his right hand... To my eye it does look like his uses his index finger on some down strokes... All in all yours is the closest to accurate I have seen. I did just recently see Paul do it live from about 12 rows back.

Thankyou John --you play it so easily -- first tried blackbird in 1969 --played the first chord by ear--(OPEN G -_)---(Open B open D ) THEN 1B /2 D----3B/4 D--etc --- sounds ok --but obviously incorrect----thankyou --got it right eventually!

Jon, I just discovered your channel looking for The Boys of Summer. A very good teacher taught Blackbird to me with finger picking as you suggested many do. Then I saw a video on KZbin that was sort of a hybrid of yours and my teachers. Thankfully I found this. So far I'm only 5 minutes into yours and it's clear..... this is exactly correct. I should be able to modify what I had been doing to adjust to what is clearly so close to what McCartney was doing. He has his own almost slightly 'sloppy' or just say 'free' way of doing it, cause he wrote it. But you're spot on. Can't wait to learn other things from your site!

Cool lesson John. I've seen Paul play it and use his index finger for the "brushing" or strumming parts, but the thumb certainly sounds fuller and less like a pick for me personally! The chords are not unlike "Willin" by Little Feat - maybe you could do a lesson on that sometime?
@wikolib6821 Жыл бұрын
Thanks. I like that you played the intro and the verse through in the very beginning. Many tutorials don't. Then you had the bridge lesson at the end. I'm a good finger picker so I don't have a problem with the picking/strumming pattern, but I was playing some of the notes in the wrong position. Same notes but incorrect position. If you're going to play Blackbird you should do it in as authentic way as possible. When you hear Paul play and sing this song and "Maybe I'm Amazed" live you realize what a brilliant composer and musician he is on base, guitar and piano.

Definitely a great lesson! The only critique that I have is that there really wasn’t any clarification as to which notes should be muted, and which notes can ring out. There was one mention in the beginning about the first cord and how it was OK if some of the other notes rang out but For some of the other positions if you let certain notes ring out it sounds pretty bad. And obviously if you have a decent ear, you can figure it out yourself but it would be nice if there was a little bit of clarification on that and it wouldn’t take very long.

Paul uses his index finger to strum not his thumb.
@philcaffrey2 жыл бұрын
Nice video but I'm still not convinced this is the technique. The mini strum that you do with your thumb should actually be played by the index and middle fingers if you want a truly authentic replication of the original. It is the frailing technique and it offers a much better result as the fingers can target the higher strings. Your thumb technique is a bit more likely to catch the lower strings which is not ideal for this song. That said, I love your videos which always have food for thought and not forgetting that music is subjective - that's why we all love it so much.
@M_C79 Жыл бұрын
Feels more like two-finger banjo style than frailing, where the thumb plays lead the lines (and you can still frail a bit). I'm not too fussed about playing it exactly like the record.

@appleturnover519 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, your lesson seems to leave some important information, i.e., in Pattern 2, if I brush with the thumb the sound is discordant; therefore, I believe that some strings should be mutes: You don't cover this. Also: Could you specify which strings are brushed with the thumb for the different chords, especially the chords down the neck like the A7 and D7sus4.
@momcheto1822 Жыл бұрын
Hello Jon, you are certainly a great guitarist and teacher, however is it necessary to include this in your title "ALL other videos are incorrect"? Why this insulting generalization?
