My chorus stays on pretty much all the time, it adds a lot of depth and texture to the bass, which in the overall band mix thickens up the whole rhythm section. My favorite is the Boss Chorus Ensemble, because the treble and bass frequencies have separate blend knobs. I like to dial the bass all the way out and crank the treble side, so that my low end stays clean and the pedal just adds a ton of high end shimmer

Nice list. The signal chain I'm using right now is SansAmp for tone shaping and DI -> Darkglass B3k for distortion -> EQD Hoof Reaper for fuzz -> Boss SY1 for synth emulation -> Zoom CDR70 for modulation and miscellaneous fx -> Boss DD200, which I can fade in via expression pedal. With this relatively simple setup, I can make almost any sound my band could ever need

I just set up my first full pedalboard. I start my signal with a tuner, then went with overdrive and chorus. I needed delay for some songs that I've been needing to work on. I'm looking to add a compressor, although I do have compression available on my amp. I actually have a fuzz pedal that I already had, in addition to the overdrive, and the two (overdrive and fuzz) both do as you suggested - add to what the guitar is doing, in key parts. The chorus is also good in specific parts (my band actually does a lot of Nirvana). So... you were right on the spot. I'll also be looking at octave pedals eventually.

I use an EQ instead of a preamp, no DI out but every single gig I've played has the bass going through the venue's DI. My chain goes tuner > comp > EQ > octave > dist > fuzz > guitar amp sim (I play both bass and guitar on my band) > chorus > reverb

@T3L3cast3r
@T3L3cast3r 3 жыл бұрын
@@JonnyDibble If they would have put a tuner in there, it would really be all I need. I like to keep things simple. For my clean side I went from my Boss LMB-3 and MXR M81, 10 knobs combined to just 4 knobs on the Bass Butler. If I use overdrive it is usually just a small amount to give my sound a bit of a kick. But if you like heavy distortion, you will find it here as well. I am glad I bought it. But I am a fan of Orange. I had their Crush 100 combo before switching to the Little Bass Thing so I knew what I would get. If you like to build a big pedalboard, the bass butler might not be your cup of Earl Grey. But for me, a set-and-forget kind of guy, it works great. (Sound is super subjective of course, but a super clean pristine pre amp it is not)

Hey Jonny. Another good video. Our first picks were the same again. The tuna, I mean the tuner. I use a Pedersen strobe. Very versatile and very accurate. The extra pedals that I use are phaser, envelope filter, multi effects and now... The Justin Chancellor wah. Man does that have a lot of "giddy up". These are probably for the "more advanced" player. Compressor is great for slap and finger style. I mostly play pick style and use that co control dynamics. As far as mic'ing cabs, definitely a fan of that over DI, it's just tricky finding a sound engineer that's not afraid to do it. With distortion, I hate blend knobs, and "bass" drive pedals aren't necessary for my playing.

I am really enjoying your videos sir, keep up the great work you are doing. I have three of your pedal choices covered with just one pedal on my board, it is a Tech21 DP3 Doug Pinnick pedal. It has a tuner, a clean mode and a high passed distortion mode footswitch selectable, and a compressor. It also has a DI, but I don't use it since the pedal is in the middle of my signal chain. My DI is a Radial JDI Direct box at the end of the chain. I also suggest a classic analog Phase Shifter like the MXR Custom Script Logo Phase 90. Another unit to look into is a High pass filter/Low pass filter combined in a single pedal. I use a Broughton HPF/LPF with a 0-20db clean boost. Helps with FOH Engineers that boost the snot out of the low end, and make the Bass a blur under the kick drum. And is great for speaker simulation as well. I don't really require an amplifier much any more now that I'm a wireless IEM user. For fun I have two cardboard boxes on stage that have Base Amp on one, and Base Speekr on the other written with a Magnum chisel tip Black Sharpie, with that exact spelling. You covered several of my other favorites in your second pedal video.

I played live in the early 90s and always had the chorus button on. 60 watts wasn't loud enough for stage volume so I had to crank it until it started to break up and sound distorted. I hated that at the time, I wanted a clean chorus sound. You just made me feel better thinking now that the sound wasn't that bad after all. I forgot where I bought the amp back in the day. Glad I never sold it. It's in my bedroom till this day and perfect for practice and recording. Love that classic Roland chorus! Cheers 🍻 mate.

I love chorus with bass. My all time favorite to use is the Walrus Audio Julia v2 pedal (the Julianna is the same but it has a vibrato circuit too) it works great with bass. I also love their Slö reverb pedal. It's a little quirky in a great way, and combines with the Julia excellently. For "non-essential" pedals, Red Panda Bitmapv2 with an MXR Vintage octave in front of every other pedal (except your wah/volume) is amazing if you want to emulate synth bass sounds.

37 years considering pedals to be guitar toys. Recently discovered the darkglass vintage microtubes pedal. Pretty killer way to add a bit of warmth, but pedal allows the grit to be blended in subtly with the clean tone. Soon as I decided on one pedal, went with 4 space board and added a tuner and chorus/flange. Room for one more on my board, but in no hurry to decide. Dont really need a HPF/LPF or compressor as my amp has those covered.

Regarding sending the bass through a DI to the front of house /PA versus mic’ing a bass cab, have you found in your experience that most modern venues always are PA equipped? Would you say having a means of DI just as important as having a cab? Bassist looking to start gigging soon, thanks!
@mlbrown1250
@mlbrown1250 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been gigging for years and pretty much always venues use DI instead of mic up for bass cabs. The only time they will use mics is u don’t have a di out, or if the venue is crappy. That’s just based on my experience tho

@@JonnyDibble if I had to choose a 5th effect, it would be an octave pedal. Specifically, an octave up. For the most part, the only pedals I really want or will need in the future are the first 4 you mentioned, but with a digitech drop. You gotta be able to get different tunings quickly. Not many people are rich and can afford 15 basses for different tunings *COUGH* Mike Kerr *COUGH*

My oldest pedal is a Boss bass EQ. I’ve had it forever and it really adds body and versatility to my signal regardless of the amp I’m using. I recently added a compressor which made me wonder why it too so long to get one. For flavor I have a dirt cheap (cheap dirt?) distortion pedal that exceeded all expectations as well as an octave/harmonizer and a quality dual phaser.

Will you please do a video/explanation on how you set these up on your pedal board? Do you use the Sansamp last b/c of the DI out? If so, what order would you set these up? Do you put your compressor at the beginning or just before the Sansamp?
@JonnyDibble
@JonnyDibble 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! I've just done a new pedalboard weirdly! Normally I compress first and then do into the preamp and then distortion then other effects. 9/10 I'll DI put the back of the amp head BUT I've now got the Darkglass Vinteage Ultra with Cab sim on the DI so I've got that last in the chain to make use of that instead 😊

I completely agree with your Top 5 but would like to add one more: I’ve had a Schalltechnik Omnilooper on my board for a few weeks and it has since become the heart of my pedal setup. It has three loops for parallel mixing, two of them with adjustable low/high pass filters. My compressor goes in the low range loop, everything dirty goes in the high range loop and the full range loop adds a little bit of clean tone. It’s simply amazing what sounds you can create with this thing. I think EHX offer a similar pedal so you might want to check that out (Schalltechnik offer their pedals as diy kits so it’s not everybody’s cup of tea)

After years and thousands of dollars messing around with gear, I'm running a fairly simple setup. My preamp is a Two Notes Le Bass, with a Darkglass Harmonic Booster, Strymon Blue Sky and Darkglass Hyper Luminal Compressor, back to the Le Bass and out the XLR output. The board allows me to do everything from deep clean lows to following lead parts, all on my Dingwall Combustion 6 string

It's a potential mine field talking about effects for bass. I don't blame you for any disclaimers. Really like you opening my mind up to the reason for pre-amps as not only am I ye of the southern paw, I love p-bass and sometimes I can't achieve a decent enough tone so the pre-amp would most likely be the answer. I'll try and get a used SansAmp or similar.

Best board I've built so far is Tuner - Sans Amp Preamp - Octave - Chorus with Flanger - Compressor - Ampeg Preamp. In that order. Love the Sans Amp tone shaping and the way it drives my other pedals. But I was missing the Ampeg punch on top so added that to the end of the chain. Works great!

It seems like those tapped notes and the harmonics just refuse to jump out and they taper off way too quickly, even with the pickup selector on 100% bridge. Will a compressor help those softer notes to come out more?
