Let's all just forget that orcs were made in mockery of elves, as Ents were made in mockery of trolls. Treebeard, himself, literally SAYS SO in the book! They were bred to be evil. "Commodified fantasy takes no risks: it invents nothing, but imitates and trivializes. It proceeds by depriving the old stories of their intellectual and ethical complexity, turning their action to violence, their actors to dolls, and their truth-telling to sentimental platitude. Heroes brandish their swords, lasers, wands, as mechanically as combine harvesters, reaping profits. Profoundly disturbing moral choices are sanitized, made cute, made safe. The passionately conceived idea of the great storytellers are copied, stereotyped, reduced to toys, molded in bright-colored plastic, advertised, sold, broken, junked, replaceable, interchangeable." -Ursula K. We are seeing a lack of good storytelling in Hollywood. Up until about the ,90s, the story was a priority, and that's why the best films have endured the test of time, remaining popular for generations of movie watchers. Instead of good stories, likeable characters, and realistic dialog, we get reboots of old franchises that should have ended long ago, when they were still good. Nobody will remember or care about this Amazon trash pile that makes a mockery of everything Tolkien ever wrote.

Basic and easy summary of second age story. Sauron been missing, shows up as Annatar. Annatar gets booted out by Galadriel and Gil-galad for being untrustworthy However Celebrimbor decides to work alongside him They spend years figuring out how to craft them, making dozens of minor rings Nine are eventually made for men, seven for dwarves In secret Celebrimbor makes the three for elves, unsullied by Sauron's influence Meanwhile Sauron secretly forges the one ring and once complete resumes his place as the dark lord When Sauron put the one ring on his finger, the elves felt this power and quickly hide the other rings Sauron angry seiged and tore down down Eregion captured Celebrimbor Under torture, Celebrimbor reveals where the nine and seven are but not ever mentions where the three are He is than skinned or at least his body is used as a flag, maybe both. So they couldn't even get this story flow right. THEY HAVE FCKED THIS VERY BASIC STORY FLOW! You can't have Sauron knowing of the elven rings else the elves would have fallen for his plan and been under his influence. Middle earth would have been fcked. You good dam muppets, It's not even that difficult to get that basic flow for a story. How did you manage this? You could read the fcking wikipedia article and understand more than Amazon does about the second age.

Incorrect though. There are never any rings made for men or dwarves, Sauron simply gives them to men and dwarves once his plan to enslave elves with them fails because their own rings (he was unaware of at the time) alerted them to the presence of the one. He collects the rings he will eventually give to men and dwarves when he sacks eregion but is unable to find the 3 because the numenoreans turn up and drive him out. The reason the rings work on men and not dwarves is because men, like elves are the creation of Eru while Dwarves were not.

Besides the writing being so bad it's painful to the ear, Galadriel's gift was discernment. She could literally see inside a person. There is no way she would not have recognized Sauron on sight. There is just no story. It's so bad it's insulting.

The Galadriel being presented here isn't a Galadriel that actually exists in the lore. It's also interesting to note that she and Elrond are actually related. Of course the show won't make mention of this, but that's not really the issue when Galadriel is actually one of the oldest Elves on Middle Earth, because she was actually born in Valinor. And they counted time differently in Valinor then, because there was no Sun yet. The years were longer. Compared to Galadriel Elrond is a child at every stage of his life. Of course this is not a story that Amazon would tell you. It's a Tolkien legend.

I mean, in fairness, that's maybe one of the less-egregious bits of this mess, because Tolkien did at least mention, at some point, the orcs going into the mountains & reproducing, I can't remember how he said/wrote it exactly, but I think he even said there must be female orcs. But, the part that gets me is them not wanting to go to war & being caring husbands & fathers. THAT is truly where the line was crossed. I don't think it would have been terrible to have a female orc &/or a baby/young orc, it's just the part where they make them out to be compassionate, caring, normal guys, basically, that gets me.

@zzevonplant There is a scane in LotR where two orcs discuss about wanting to leave the Dark Lord's army with a bunch of their mates, head somewhere far from the war and do their own thing. To be fair, their thing probably involves looting, fighting and killing, but they want to do that stuff for themselves rather rhan in the glory of some dark master. Maybe I'm reading the scene with the orc family wrong but I didn't interpret it as saying that the orcs suddenly became good, peaceful etc. They don't want to go to war against men and elves (because that gets them killed) but it doesn't mean they would be all peaceful and lovely if they stayed in Mordor - there are literal slaves there, remember? They still want to do selfish and nasty things, they just want to do them home rather than out there

@@moon-moth1that race has been gnociding accross the planet for as long as they have been a distinct race. In broad terms you can say all of them are evil without turning it into a allegory. The real world and the current thing doesn't need to flow into every nook and cranny of escapism. I understand that his works are supposed to be a modern recreated mythology for England but "modern" as in his time. If we want to create our own modern thing, we should definitely go and do that. Oh wait that already exists, Warcraft. The Orcs in that setting started out as shamanistic tribes, got tricked into drinking demon's blood wich turned them into the gnocidal monsters we expect from a Tolkien's Orc. And then the first Orc who drank that demon's blood sacrificed himself while killing said demon. "I have freed myself" he says, as he dies in the arms of Thrall. Thrall replies "No, You have freed us all" and lets out a mighty growl that echoes accross the canyon they've been fighting the demon in. He then leads the Orcs into the most desolate land he could find as atonement for their sins. This is a modern story/mythology that isn't a fanfiction of Tolkien. We don't need to butcher and edit older works to fit our current thing. We can write things for our current thing.

I especially loved how "Galadriel" wrapped a random rope around her hand (boat safety 101... nice) while trying to coil it and tie it off at the same time, looking irritated and disoriented, her body language just screaming "I have no clue what I'm doing and the clowns who direct me don't know either" to the audience. They have a built-in devoted fanbase, access to use parts of (arguably) the greatest works of fiction ever written, one of the biggest platforms in the world on which to release this thing, AND a *massive* budget. And all they had to do to not ruin this thing out of the gate was preserve the essence of the story - they didn't have to get all the lore perfectly, Jackson didn't & most people loved those films, but he kept the soul of the story intact, the messages/ideas remained in place. And they had to write it well, just make it compelling, interesting, & not a miserable experience to sit through. That's the BARE minimum & that's all they had to do. And they just couldn't even do that. 🤦🏻‍♀️😭

But then Poppy just abandons them and takes the map with her. Also I noticed every single storyline got a new female character shoehorned in just the first 3 episodes (except Numenor but they already had a Karen who was waiting to be a strong woman at the end of ep3) Celembrembor got a female elf assistant, the Orcs got a woman AND a baby, Isildur came across some random lady and started travelling with her, and the dwarves got TWO female dwarves who suddenly appeared to sing with Disa for the first time. It’s just the same dull, slow pace, shot after shot after shot. Even the zooms don’t break the dirge rhythm. It was actually fascinating to confirm this element of dullness, because I couldn’t believe ANYONE would edit this way, let alone a big-money series. 😮

You didn't watch either season, so why would anyone care what you think? If we want your opinion, we can just go online to watch some alt-right youtuber cry about the one scene that was actually accurate with Tolkien's work. I love RoP exclusively bc it caused a ton of fake "tolkien fans" to self-out. Peter Jackson didn't write LOTR despite what all these frauds think.

Galadriel in RoP is a secret villain. Her stubborn pride and self-righteousness single handedly led to the the return of Sauron, the destruction of Numenor, the creation of Mordor, and all the hardship to follow for the next couple thousand years. She thinks she is better than everyone else and when she is confronted about her flaws and mistakes, she takes zero ownership or accountability. It is a total bastardization of the character

Gil-Galad and Elrond should be worshiping the ground Galadriel walks on. Alongside Cirdan she is the wisest Elf in Middle Earth at this point. This show makes her beaten down by Gil-Galad, disrespected by Elrond and frankly: she deserves it. She’s short sighted, brash, cannot even take responsibility for her own mistakes, petulant and a plethora of other negatives. But no, *WE* are the Misogynists, not Amazon that made her this way.

"Normies make everything ugly and boring". Once upon a time, I would not have believed that. I wanted more people loving the things I loved, to see how beautiful and fascinating they were. And then I watched every fictional world I loved in the last 20 to 50 years fall apart, because they failed to resist being made ugly and boring by the invaders. I hit the Like before this point because of funny lines. I wasn't expecting a fundamental truth of the horror of this world to hit me. There's a study called "World3" that implies our western civilisation will end in about 2040 (and that's not even a left-vs-right politics thing, that's looking at metrics like birth rate, death rate, agricultural output, pollution, non-renewable resources, industrial output). I am now perfectly prepared to believe (or at least work as if) the Seventh Age will end in about sixteen years. Apart from the fact I'm not self-sufficient yet, I'm kinda wishing it would just get here faster.

The funniest part about Guyladriel's "battle plan" is that the entirety of Mordor is already on their east side. Unless they want to circumnavigate either the mountains of Ered Lithui or Ephel Duath, the ONLY possible way to invade Mordror is from its west side. What a chad commander of the Northern armies.

"Noone can give you a name" is a classic line and will be quoted endlessly - along with "why does a stone sink" - to illustrate the sheer unthinking stupidity of these writers. Never forget : they had a real Tolkien expert on their team, they didn't need to memorise the books - but they fired him very early on.

Seeing as how you people think Orcs being former Elves (having families) & Orcs not wanting to goto war is somehow not Tolkien, despite the fact it's the most Tolkien of the entire RoP series, makes me think absolutely nothing you people think is based on reality. It's all based on mindlessly following youtube grifters who just tell you what feels good in your emotions.

@nowayjosedaniel The Orcs are specifically designed to be reviled. They are irredeemably evil (at least from the standpoint of Elves and Men), and in every description of them Tolkien makes note of the fact that their only pleasure is in causing pain and suffering to other life. They are selfish, sadistic, and pitiless. The reason that having an Orc family is so ridiculous is because of what such a scenario requires of the individuals. Orcs show no love or affection, no sense of self-sacrifice or altruism: all things necessary for a family unit to function. By their nature, their sexual reproduction (if we assume they still reproduce the same way as their Elven ancestors) would be in broods, not families, with copulation occuring for no purpose other than the carnal pleasure of it, and with fathers neither knowing or caring who their children are. Furthermore, by humanizing the Orcs in the manner done by Rings of Power, they have removed the moral certitude regarding them. As creatures who seek only to kill and torture, and with no drives other than sadistic pleasure-seeking, there is no moral quandry regarding fighting and killing them. This is how it is depicted in Tolkien’s works. Orcs are not the moral equals of Men and Elves. There is no scenario where they would simply live in peace, because to do so would be to change their very nature and the narrative role they serve: as unyielding and unequivocal enemies of all that is “good.” Tolkien’s work is not one with moral grey areas, it is an example of an epic narrative where one side is the embodiment of righteousness which must contend with an absolute evil that cannot be reasoned with. Orcs, as the slave-soldiers of that evil, are likewise placed in hard juxtaposition to the protagonists in the narrative. You’ve been very vocal throughout the comments about people “not understanding Tolkien” or being “fake fans.” Before lobbing insults, take a step back and consider what it is you’re actually arguing for.

Mithrandir: given to him by the Elves. Tharkûn: given by the Dwarves. Gandalf the Grey: His most common known, given originally by the men of Arnor a name he continued to use in Gondor Greyhame: given to by the people of Rohan. Incarnus: Gandalf's name in The South. Gandalf the White/The White Rider: Given after his return Grey Fool/Stormcrow/Láthspell: An insulting nickname given to Gandalf by other characters.

Galadriel did fight and she did have military experience, and she was a bit of a hotshot (Noldorin blood is strong)--at the beginning of the First Age. We're in mid-Second Age now. She wised up pretty damn quickly living through a literal apocalypse, like all the other elves who survived it. Also she's tall and I will never forgive not casting Gwendoline Christie as this younger Galadriel. Anyway I hate everything about RoP lmao

I kinda love how bad it is. It's like that My Immortal fanfiction, or the Room, it's just endlessly entertaining in how much it sucks. When Sauron tried to convince Orcs and he, the great deceiver, became whiny and his voice broke, it's just like I'm watching Spaceballs again. The orcs - a race that only knows or lusts for war - are made out to be sympathetic familymen. The ring - whose entire point is that a power over the minds of others will always corrupt, and power borne of evil will turn you evil always - is now 'good if it's used by the right people.' It is unintentional satire. It's so silly that you can't imagine it's played seriously. But it is, and we should be thankful.

In one of the approximately 56 rewrites of the character and story of Galadriel and Celeborn, there is a short piece where she does actually fight. Against the sons of Feanor in the first Kinslaying,in order to protect her Teleri kin, with her, in this version , Noldor husband Celeborn aka Teleporno who is woefully absent from this show as well as her daughter Celebrian. But that was before the first age even started, shortly after the end of the age of the trees. And then she never did it again.

Around last season Rings of Power fans were also trying to promote the idea that Galadriel got her magical powers from Nenya. She didn't. Tolkien straight up said that Rings of Power could not grant anyone wholly new powers they didn't have before, but only enhance what they already had. He also said in Unfinished Tales that Galadriel's magical power and especially her power of insight into the minds of others was evident "from her earliest years". According to the Silmarillion she also spent some years learning and honing her magical abilities with her Aunt, Melian in the Firs Age. The series seems to be doubling down on this erroneous idea though so expect them to start saying it again.

In LOTR the elves are portrait as ethereal, pure creatures full of wisdom. In TROP they are the spikey ears version of dumb and dumber. Also, while the dwarfs seem to have a maglev high speed train connection between Khazah Dum and Eregion, the challenged elves are riding turtles on their way there. Galadriel is the most unlikeable character in the history of series, and she has a lot of competition for that in TROP

I won't pretend to be a huge LOTR fan but even my basic knowledge of these things has me rolling my eyes and questioning why any of these characters make the choices they do. I want to like this show and enjoy the fantasy elements, but so much of it is poorly done. I've watched dozens of critiques of this show, and listened to some positive takes as well, but ultimately all of these "small nitpicks" add up over time and have created something that doesn't feel part of this world (or really any world). It just feels so bizarre. Also, as an aside, we need more Jonny Law POSITIVE reviews - there must be some show you enjoy out there you can provide your comedic insights on!
