I tested out two Art Graf products - Graphite Putty and Water-Soluble Graphite. I really don’t know how these products are meant to be used so this was quite a raw video. It feels like there is some utility for my practice but mostly I'd love to know if anyone else uses them, what role do they play in your practice. Hope you find this useful and let me know in the comments if you have any tips for us.

Me… Never sketched, or painted anything in my life… watching the video and taking mental notes on which one I should use. So weird. But I love Jono’s art, have bought a print and am happy to just be a fan.❤️

I use that graphite paste as a large ball (larger as a tennis ball) and roll or slide it over the paper. Yes your hands become totally black and shiny which is awesome and can be further used too produce lighter shades on the paper. Then in a second stage I use water with brush as well as pens etc. Its awesome. I love it. Of course my artwork is realistic like yours:)

When I first saw you creating your art, I thought you were already using water soluble graphite because your backgrounds were so dark and smooth and you used water. I love water soluble graphite for that reason. You can cover a large area and get it dark without the shine that graphite can have from a pencil coverage

We actually had the creator of Artgrapf come to or store to demonstrate his product. Aproach this as purposeful playing in a rather abstract way. Roll the graphiteputty into a ball and touch it into water, then roll it around on the paper. Neat textures. Play with it.

The putty is more of a print making thing,so Perhaps if u wanted to integrate a stencil piece for the background of your work or something, but u can also turn it in to paint if u just tear a piece off and add water.🖤

Soft, malleable graphite modelling clay to create your own drawing tool and create a variety of colour tones and contrasts. It can be kneaded and moulded into any shape, giving you more control over the stroke.

I draw and paint with oil, so I’m definitely intrigued by the water soluble powdered graphite. It could be used to add some abstraction under glazes or soft ethereal effects. That putty just seems odd to me, but someone can and will do amazing work with it.

I think when you activate water soluble graphite with water you probably have to use similar techniques as in traditional watercolor; working from light to dark, preserving highlights etc.

The putty is also water soluble and gets much darker in value. I love using it as one big ball to cover large area, or roll on random textures or creat big, bold strokes. It’s great used on damp paper. The powder graphite erases really well, until you wet it.

This is a great review ! There are a few videos here on You Tube about these products as well . I haven't tried them yet but I'm sure you'd do well with any of the products you decide to use . We all search for something to make our art an easier task but it looks to me that you're already doing an amazing job with what you already have . Thank you for the information as well as the inspiration !🌠

The graphite putty is kind of an interesting one, I used it wet and it gave me a lot of texture but it is very fragile and cracks. I enjoyed just taking out the entire lump in my hand and using it to get a very raw expressive result :) it is intended to be "sharpened" like you thought too, but it's not exactly pencil accuracy, that's for sure!

The putty should also be water soluble. Here are a few ways i've used it: 1) Wetting the surface of the medium, and dragging the putty over to give a very dark fill. This is good for quickly blocking in large sections of your work with a solid shade. 2) Using it as a sort of malleable stamp to apply randomized patterns of texture, good for creating uneven non-repeating patterns And you're right, the putty is a huge mess, wear gloves :) Like you say, just play around until you find an interesting approach that will work for you

I don't know if you have solved this problem yet, but I bet you can lift that water soluble graphite powder in this way. Treat it like water colour paint. That is let the area dry completely, then use a fine, stiff (but not too stiff) brush, not too much water. With watercolour I'd choose a sable brush because of the density of the fiber and the control of line and amount of water you get with it. Graphite might ruin sable though, I don't know. If graphite does indeed behave like watercolours, where you wet and dab or stroke, the colour will lift. Dab with a clean cloth like a very absorbant paper towel frequently, or the white of the paper underneath will get contaminated with colour. Graphite is so powerful it might anyway. It won't get back to pure white, but you should be able to get some mid-tone highlights. The second part is that, as great as she is, Arches is not the best paper for this type of removal process. Fabriano artistico has a more durable surface when wet than Arches. The surface of Arches will roll and disappear first, if you put the 2 of them to the wet and rub with a stiff brush test. However, I can only speak with assurance of this with regard to the cold press and not the hot press. If you find out otherwise for the hot press I'd love to know! Wonderful review. Absolutely love your work!

The only water soluble graphite I like and use, are the Faber Castell Graphite Aquarelle! They took the throne from my Pitt Graphite Matt, who had taken the throne, from the 9000. SO for me, it's not just the best water soluble pencil, but also my all time favorite graphite pencil! As for pencils in general, my favorite, is the Red Chalk from Koh-I-Noor , in it;'s 5.6mm version, that they call "Russet Sepia" for some reason. ( I use the 5340 for those and the 5347 lead holder, for their Dark Sepia 5.6mm leads, that are my 2nd favorite sketching pencil). Art Graf is ok, just not for me.

Just curious: isn't graphite sort of water-soluble already? I've drawn shaded areas with a regular pencil, and used a VERY lightly damp brush to manipulate it... when done correctly, it makes for a flawless, completely matte finish.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKeWloV_aLWdfNk Here is a link to a video from the manufacturer of the putty. It can be used to create amazing organic patterns and can make markes that are very challenging to do with a pencil. Is more of a moldable stamp. P.S I use a rubber medical glove while I'm using it. I also impress it on on items like rocks or driftwood, large feathers, squeeze it with my hand...ect Then i use it like a stamp to transfer the embossed texture to the paper. Usually over a light value i put down with pencil.
