Each date is not only jumbled, but is referring to such different things... Efficacy rates depends on when the trial was done as far as the landscape goes. You can test the exact same vaccine at 2 different times, or in different populations with more covid around, and the efficacy rate will be wildly different, yet they're actually the same vaccine. That's why the J&J vaccine has a much lower efficacy percentage, because it was trialed during the Delta variant, and when far more people were being infected, compared to the other earlier vaccines. If you tested Pfizer and Moderna when J&J was trialed, they would be way lower too. BUT, even if you get infected (it's not bullet proof), you are still vaccinated, meaning the symptoms are FAR less severe, and you are contagious for less amount of time, and your chance of ending up in hospital or dying are now extremely unlikely as a result. etc. etc. you get the gist.

As someone who works in data, and knows my way around a video editor, I am strongly fighting the compulsion to disassemble all the headlines, and play them grouped by category. The reason they are different numbers, are they are literally different things. It's like going "you said there were 10 apples, but I only have 8 oranges, wtf!?!??!" While numbers ARE empirical, how you slice them is not. How you present data is definitely an art, not a science, and you can pull a lot of different numbers, stories and conclusions from the same data set (e.g a study). You can SEE in the headlines he uses, they describe different things - "100% effectiveness in moderate cases", "100% effectiveness in preventing deaths", and I'd be willing to bet that if you read more than literally just the headline, it would probably have some further clarifications on things like 'within patients not suffering from a serious pre-existing condition', or 'within patients vaccinated in x period of time before contacting covid'. Big shocker, but headlines, literally by definition, do not give you the full story. Eugh, it winds me up so much. I just want people to make good arguments. If there is data out there that's concerning, then talk about it directly, but if you don't understand (or choose to ignore) the context and just go "THIS ARTICLE SAID A BAD NUMBER", it isn't constructive for anyone, it's just scaremongering, and it obscures any good points you might have been able to make. Eugh.

There'll be differences in efficacy based on age, based on how long it's been since your last shot (fading efficacy), which vaccine you're taking, whether you're looking at deaths vs. hospitalization or severity, vs. which variant of the virus you're looking at, which study (different group sizes). This has been the case since the 90s believe it or not, it just hadn't reached the mainstream like this until now but the antivax movement has been around for longer than I've been alive. The media in particular played a really big part in normalizing vaccine-hesitancy between 1998-2010, running stories that uncritically platforming parents that claimed their kids got autism or disabilities from vaccines with the conclusion of the piece usually being “well this all seems rather contentious and scary, do your own research.” If corporate news hadn't capitalised on conspiracy theories this situation right now wouldn't be happening.

With regards to the intro and Jontron's meme video: the reason why there was such a wide-ranging disparity in *reported* effectiveness was because the media typically reported on a single vaccines efficacy in the headlines (J&J, Moderna, OR Pfizer) AND they picked different metrics to report on: either the vaccines ability to prevent you from getting sick at all, the chance of keeping you out of the hospital, or the chance to prevent death. Oh and some outlets were reporting death and infection statistics for people with pre-existing conditions in the headline too and you didn't find out until you opened the article. The media absolutely dropped the ball on reporting COVID responsibly. It seems like every day there's some new headline about MASSIVE breakthrough infections...then you open the article and it's in a county with 100 people and all 100 people were in the same building for a gathering LMAO.
