If you're looking for a more immersive or "realistic" rpg I highly recommend the gothic series by German developer piranha bytes, especially the first two parts. Granted these games are more than 20 years old by now and that is definitely noticeable with the graphics and the controls but almost no game comes close to them in terms of immersion and feeling of progression. As to the people being always friendly, the first game starts with you getting thrown into a prison colony and then getting punched in the face by the first person you meet and the games overall have a much more grounded feel to them.

An aggressive decade-long marketing campaign and a vibrant modding community is a big reason as to why we're still talking about Skyrim, not necessarily because it's a masterpiece.
@justinlacek14813 жыл бұрын
At the time, it really was a masterpiece. Base Skyrim did a lot of things that we hadn't really seen done before, or done well (outside of like Fallout). In fact, the base game, if we're talking raw features/mechanics/gameplay, beats out a lot of newer titles. How many homes can you own and improve in Cyberpunk 77? How many playable species are in thd Mass Effect games? In Red Dead 2, how many options do you have for dealing with guards when they come to arrest you? The game has an insane amount of creative freedom in how the player approaches it and offers still one of the best roleplaying experiences you can find. Even the crafting system, where you could level up enough to create almost any armor, amulet, weapon, etc. *and* add special effects was something we hadn't ever seen done that well before outside of maybe some MMOs. Mods helped a lot, but that's not what *made* Skyrim. An easy way to see this is to contrast the legacy of Skyrim with that of Fallout 4. One of these games had a legendary impact on the gaming industry.
@zacheryeckard30513 жыл бұрын
@@justinlacek1481 And what of that wasn't present in Oblivion or Morrowind? The housing stuff in the base game was very rudimentary.
@justinlacek14813 жыл бұрын
@@zacheryeckard3051 The point is that Skyrim did all that way better, and it's not really a knock against the game if your counter-example is a game in that same series. That's like me saying Halo Reach's Forge isn't impressive because Halo 3 had it. Again - How many homes can I buy in Cyberpunk 2077? Can I bribe a guard or persuade them in Red Dead 2? How many hire-able mercenaries are in The Witcher 3? Can my Shepard or Ryder be a different species in Mass Effect? I could literally go on and on. I guarantee, you'll be hard-pressed to find a non-Bethesda or Fallout title with a package as complete as base skyrim. Skyrim did all of this shit in 2011. This is pre-Witcher 3, pre-Divinity 2. Pre-DA Inquisition. Pre-Bannerlord. Nier didn't exist back then, and neither did Horizon Zero

Since the comparison to New Vegas came up: New Vegas had an impressive amount of variety in the way some of its quests could play out, and the way skills and stats can influence dialogue options. Just taking the quest where a couple of ghouls want to fly away with some rockets: You start it because someone said he needs your help and will give you information you need for the main quest. First option: Ignore the quest by stealing the information from the person (probably requires you to have skilled sneaking and stealing) or killing and looting him. Second Option: Deal with the problem by killing all ghouls. Or you could help them ready the rockets and... Third Option: send them on their merry way. Fourth Option: sabotage the rockets so they would crash. Fifth option: If your character knows their science and technology well enough: Optimise the route the computer had planned for the rockets. And then you have options beyond that, like talking the human in the ghoul-group out of thinking he is a ghoul. I've played Skyrim quite a bit but I can't remember a quest that had similiarly branched outcomes. And as to the dialogue options: It's pretty telling that two thirds of the speech-perks in Skyrim have to do with selling or buying. And the few times that any sort of speech is useful outside of bartering it's always "[What your character would say] (Persuade/Intimidate/Lie)" with no hint of whether you have the skills that are required or how likely you are to succeed. New Vegas just tells you what skills you need to succeed, and gives you a joke option that fails if you don't have the skills. And then it aren't even always just speech-skills that are required. If the PC isn't a good talker but know their way around computers, they could call out someone who is lying about computers with a dialogue options that requires sufficient points in the science-skill, or they could impress a fellow hunter with survivalist knowledge about some animal.

I have the same opinion of Skyrim that I have of Fallout 4; I really liked and remember my first time stepping out of Helgen/Vault 111. However the stories both main and side quests are completely ass; it's almost all just fetch quests. The main quest has me chasing down some dragon/baby I don't care about until eventually I fight some climatic battle with him for no real reward or impact on the world. Since there's no RPG system in place I never feel like any one playtrhrough matters because I can become anything I want in any playthrough. If I try to skip the story I install the game, wander around for 40 minutes clearing the same handful of beginner dungeons that are completely similar in design/difficulty/cool factor to any other dungeon anywhere on the map. After I get a few rewards I realize it's all building to nothing and leave the game.

fallout 4 actually rewards exploration through the scrap serving as an actual mechanic beyond the already unlimited currency. i think they also tried to make more interesting and good looking environments as well. it isn't great, but if the actual feel of the gameplay improved i'd actually recommend it to people. it isn't just me that feels like the gameplay is jittery and uncomfortable to actually play, right? like, in stalker i can deal with running mutants, but in fallout i just cannot deal with dogs.

@@comyuse9103 I personally hit post scarcity levels of scrap by hour 10 or so. 20 or 30 hours in even the rare stuff like screws and fiber optics you should be sitting on a couple dozen. It could have been a good idea, but it was too easy stockpile over time.
@ashfox74983 жыл бұрын
@Glockjaw I guess that's what I mean, New Vegas is ultimately a fetch quest; but it's has a huge story that makes it worth completing. By contrast with Fallout 4 it's "Hey can you go out and grab me 5 blood leaf so I make some drugs?" > yes > sarcastic yes > pay me more, but yes > no (later yes) Skyrim put a huge focus on radiant quests and Fallout 4 quadruppled down on them. Even just counting each radiant quest as one thing I'd think easily over half of the quests in the game are just radiant quests which half the time just involve you clearing some dungeon of raiders/ghouls. And the few quests that do have writing range from just barely serviceable (the quest to escape the cannery of ghouls was okay) to truly awful (boy in the fridge anyone?) Even the guild quests in Skyrim were horribly disappointing. I didn't notice until my third playthrough but you can go from new recruit to guildmaster in 2 hours for any guild in Skyrim, and that's not even with some crazy speedrunning strategy; it's just that's how little story you have. I think that's what keeps Oblivion from being this bad, while the combat system is bad in that game too (at least stealth archers weren't so broken and OP) the quests are fun to complete and the people are fun to talk to.

No that's completely fair. I enjoy the underworld movies, but they are soooo fkn bad as actual movies. We can recognize stuff being bad, but we are still allowed to enjoy these things. Nothing is 100% objective, as everything by definition with our senses is subjective. Just because skyrim sucks in a design perspective, doesn't mean nobody should ever enjoy it. For example; Tetris is a masterpiece in video games. But far from everyone should objectively deem it to be one of their favorites. But we can still recognize the genius behind things. I love Bethesda's ambition, but they always focus on the wrong thing. That's why New Vegas is better than any Bethesda game ever made. It put the focus on the right areas. On the other hand; I will defend "The Pitt"-DLC for Fallout 3 as one of the best DLCs I have ever touched.

@@7PlayingWithFire7 In the case of skyrim I think it's actually more complicated, because while every single element taken in isolation is kinda bad (generally meaning lacking in polish and balancing), the general designs is amazing at creating that sense of freedom that is the whole point of the game- and in that sense the game is great and very successful at what it attempts. While many of the features deserve criticism and we should demand better for the sequels, and make mods to remediate them if we want; if we're honest we know that pretty much any improvement during the actual development back in 2010 would probably come at the cost of other features of the game. The design and dev philosophy is absolutely what the game needed to be released at all, and the game is actually better than the sum of its parts.

Yep. It popular and has greatly affected the gaming culture. But it's shallow even for an open world game. However, I like it as a game I can play while I listen to political KZbin to sate my ADHD, without need pay attention. Keeps the hands busy. The difficulty is even worse than you described. It only effects the player. Your Summons and Followers are uneffected when you change the difficulty. Want to beat Legendary? Make a Conjuration character and give all the best gear to a Follower. The crafting recursion is a bug known as the Fortify Restoration Loop and is a bug that you can mod out. Crafting it still crazy overpowered even without the bug. Vendors money limits are hilarious in how you can reset their inventory by saving, attacking the shopkeeper, and then reloading the save. Want to sell more stuff? Commit a felony and then rewind time! Yeah, mods make it better, but you can't fix fundamental issues with mods.

it is kind of sad that some of the bugs and console commands feel more magical than the actual spells and shouts in the game. like, punching a dude in the dick, and then warping the fabric of space, and creating a diverging timeline just so you can sell your 50th iron dagger is some seriously impressive wizard shit, and I kind of wish the game had more of that than just slow moving fireballs and flying icesicles. also, using console commands to kill or rez NPCs, or spawn a bugged quest item because it failed to load is arcane enough that it ACTUALLY looks like you are writing out a spell, or at least using a death note.

Skyrim is among my favorite games to this day, and I agree with basically everything Vaush says. The fun of Skyrim, for me, 200% is in the atmosphere and the fact that it’s an Elder Scrolls title with all the accompanying fun lore rather than the gameplay (to be fair though, and maybe I’m just too casual a gamer, but I don’t think the game was *that* unfun). While I recognize that it isn’t a good gameplay feature, but I actually had a lot of fun exploiting the enchanting system. I basically made my mage Iron Man and enchanted a suit of armor so that Destruction and Conjuration spells wouldn’t cost any magicka. Maybe not fun in the traditional difficulty sense, but definitely fun in the power-trip sense.
@nicksiegfried49062 жыл бұрын
Yea except the elder scrolls lore kinda sucks tho. It doesn't help that while the world is fun to explore, the stories in the games are presented in such a mediocre way that it makes the lore behind said stories incredibly uninteresting and unsatisfying. Good fantasy games/movies/books usually are written in well and interesting enough ways that it makes you want to explore the world further like the intrigue and mystery of dark souls/bloodborne, the cool characters and creatures of the witcher, or just the sheer depth and detail of JRR Tolkien's legendarium, yet whenever I'm faced with a lore dump in skyrim I'm always like, "yea, but why tf should I actually care about this?" The elder scrolls just feels like a bargain bin version of someone else's fantasy universe and it isn't made any more interesting by the fact that the lore is only told through wiki pages, in-game books, boring dialog from NPCs, or "by the numbers" quests that you could find in any other rpg. It's not the worst thing ever but it's just that there isn't a single character, event, or location in the game interesting enough to make the lore behind them interesting and because the stuff in the game isn't interesting there's no real payoff if you do actually read into the lore. I swear there's more interesting lore behind that one battering ram named Grond in LOTR than there is in the entirety of Skyrim.

16:30 not really like that. The way the recursion works is that your armor enchantments scale up with restoration (since they are considered buffs). So you enchant full gear of fortify alchemy, make a restoration potion, drink it, unequip and reequip all your alchemy gear to update the stats, and creat a new more powerful restoration potion; until you want to break the cycle and make multiple restoration potions (as to save the progress), enchanting potion and blacksmith potion to have op gear (can be like 1million dmg enchantments and armor in 2 mins of doing this)

Skyrim is a great sandbox. Just avoid crafting and conjuration (dremora lords specifically). I dont get why they didnt make the dremora lords scale to your level like they did with the sanguine rose (supercool staff that doesn't break the game). Up to level 60 the dremoras just demolish everything in sight while you're just sitting there. Sounds fun, but it isn't. I personally just use the rose staff and a bound bow. Use the dremora lord as a meatshield while I snipe targets from afar (without sneaking). Generally keeps me amused for about 30 hours untill I put the game away again. The story is just background noise. It's all about exploration and looting. If you get 100 in enchanting there is no reason to do either anymore and the game just immediately turns stale.

It literally just plays the same theme over and over, which quickly loses all of its epicness when you realize how lazy the soundtrack is. It lacks variety, it lacks mixing. I mean just contrast that to Botw, where the music will dynamically alter instruments and pace depending on the situation or time of day. GRANTED! I do NOT think that Botw music is an amazing casual listening to music experience, or even more memorable, skyrim is certainly more memorable. Just saying the music gets diluted by how bad the actual game is. Like I never think "oh the dragonborn song started cause theres a dragon! THIS IS EXCITING!" I just think "ugh this lame garbage again". That might just be being biased there, but if you want supreme music just check out the Final fantasy series.

Bethesda RPGs are "baby's first RPG" games. They're impressive to people who don't have a deep appreciation of the genre. Everything in a Bethesda RPG has been done much, much better in another RPG. The roleplaying is at a bare minimum in a Bethesda RPG too. They're more open world action adventure games than RPGs. It's pretty telling that New Vegas is considered the best modern day Bethesda RPG when it was developed by a different team.

That's a pretty fair take on Skyrim. It's been more than 8 years since I played the game and the only character I vaguely remember is the Jarl played by Vladimir Kulich from The 13th Warrior. The main story line, equally unmemorable. From a combat perspective, I prefer more tactical, party-based games. I absolutely loathe busy work/grinding, crafting/recipes, & inventory management/shopping. There've been a few games where I've fallen behind the curve in equipment because I've held off on crafting & shopping around (in so many games the best gear is not found adventuring), despite having an abundance of ingredients & coin; ultimately leaving the game unfinished because I couldn't be bothered going through the rigmarole of upgrading - yeah, I'll do all that optimisation stuff with my best ingredients later.
