@@downtown_ethanbrownEvery KZbinr that receives a kickback for a product’s sale, receives the item being reviewed for free, or is straight up paid to review a product is not unbiased. They all do the mental gymnastics like at the end of this video trying to convince themselves and viewers that they’re somehow the exception. I know nothing about these people beyond their KZbin persona, so there’s no way to judge which of them, if any, are trustworthy. Therefore to me, none of them are trustworthy. Pickleball paddle KZbinrs should lead each review video with a statement laying out what they’re paid if a person uses their code to purchase a paddle, but I’ve yet to see a KZbinr that does so.

So, if you have a code for every single company in the industry, how is that biased toward one specific company? When every single company in the industry offers to send you the gear for free, I also don't understand how that adds bias to the review. Feel free to look at any of my negative reviews (Franklin STK, Gearbox CX11, Adidas Metalbone, Vatic Pro Oni, Zane Navratil signature paddle, etc) and tell me that receiving that product for free added bias to the review. You are welcome to believe what ever you would like about us or how we do our reviews, but we have plenty of history to prove as minimal bias as possible. There will of course always be bias toward what one individual player likes more than another (I don't tend to prefer high swing weight paddles) but no company gets favoritism as a brand. You are calling it "mental gymnastics" when we are literally trying to give you what you want which is MORE transparency. If that's how you would like to view it, then I don't believe any review any KZbin is going to be your cup of tea.

Chris, thanks for the introduction to the Franklin Sweet Spot Trainer paddle. I've been using it for most of this summer in south Florida. In June, the heat and humidity was just too much for this 78 y/o to handle so I started playing indoors instead. Since the level of play indoors is lower I thought that using a trainer might level the playing field. The results have been a mixed bag. It's been fun having folks coming over and wanting to feel it and measure the trainer against their paddles. Almost universally they're amazed how well it plays. Since you were talking about quiet paddles in this episode I had to mention that the trainer is VERY quiet and what you and your brother described about quiet paddles is so true and how it slows down your opponents reaction time. That's a comment I hear daily. I've gotten so used to playing with the trainer it takes a few game points to get accustomed to switching back to one of my Legacies. So by now I've got in 50+ games with the trainer and I love it. To bad it's not USAP approved. Thanks again for all your efforts. Hope to see you in Mesa.

Chris, as for the paddle vendors "complaining" about your time &/or opinion, to timely review or not & personal opinion, outside of their petty complaints, realize this is a reflection of just how IMPORTANT your channel & paddle option has become. Meaning, take it as a COMPLIMENT for where you taken your podcast. I, personally, ALWAYS look forward to YOUR paddle review - over ALL other reviewers. And a large reason for you being my personal favorite is strongly due to your perceived level of PERSONAL INTEGRITY. In closing, just keep doing what you are doing & being TRUE TO ONESELF. I suspect, just like myself, this is a large reason WHY so many regular viewers keep returning to your channel. #BigFan

TD here: Our tourney and rec play uses Franklin balls which are obviously a bit slower than dura/ selkirk/ vulcan, so the gen 3s and poppy gen 2s feel ok to me speed wise (I also play competitively at 5.0 level). IMO pickleball should cap power/ pop/ spin at Gen 3 levels and either use Franklin balls or pressure other companies to make balls that are similar in speed. They also stay round/ bounce more true on avg than dura/ selkirk/ vulcan so it would solve that problem. As far as upa vs usap rules, not sure yet on what we will do if that becomes a thing.

Tournament organizer for a parks and rec department here. I will be checking the USAP approved paddle list online on the day of the tournament and will have to check every paddle at check in. I put this on our rule sheet and plan to send a reminder email a week in advance. Unfortunately with the Joola delisting, I’m worried there might be some confusion. I decided to not use UPAA because it isn’t widely known and most people have paddles with USAP stamps still. In the future I will probably use whatever is more common amongst our local rec players. I announced our September tournament about 3 weeks ago and now there are joola mod paddles, another joola on the way, and apparently a legal 14mm ronbus ripple you guys mentioned in this podcast that isn’t coming up for me on the USAP website when I search (as of 8/14/24 at 1pm). Hopefully our players remember this is a non duper tournament with pickle jars for trophies and nobody gets heated over this confusing paddle mess.

As long as you can remain unbiased, like you, and I, believe you can, there's no need to feel a conflict of interest in making higher profits if offered. If you are offered higher percentages and the paddle performs, than good for you and the company, if not, no sweat for you, you did your job. I see what you're saying tho

KS PPA was my first qualifier event ever and I had to play first round against another team from KS who I literally train with every week. This is incredibly disappointing and frustrating for everyone. I complained to the tournament director and they told me the draw is created using points. However, as you pointed out, the chance of us getting paired up against each other given the number of teams in the draw is quite low. I call BS on their system and seems like their “system” is using address/player location as a way to match people up. Looks like I’ll be going to more APP tourneys to make it worth my money. Great episode!

I’ve been enjoying your content and appreciate the insightful discussions and engaging format of your podcast. I noticed in your episodes that you often hold your microphones manually. I’m curious if there is a specific reason for this choice rather than using stationary microphones, like those seen in radio stations, which might allow for a more relaxed presentation style. Is this a stylistic decision, or perhaps there are technical considerations?

Chris stop engaging with these people, I think they enjoy it. Anyway, a couple of points. 1). I never use your reviews, John Kew's reviews or Braydons as the sole basis on which paddle I am going to purchase, rather I use these reviews to educate myself on the various technologies and specs etc. 2. The reviewers are where I learned about a key metric, swing weight, which has been very important to me. 3. No one HAS to use the affiliate link. So many people have affiliate links and discount codes - reviewers, instructors, ambassadors/reps. etc. Not to mention sales etc. Oh yeah one more thing.....the Head pro revolt 4.0 shoe that you mentioned because of your Plantar Fasciitis - my husband and I LOVE and have purchased 6 pair off amazon - no links, no codes nothing ! I predict local tournaments will allow whichever types of paddles that attract the most paying customers, which will be that basically any paddle can be used. I’ll also predict that in 5 years, pickleball leagues and tournaments with strict paddle rules (such as no paddles allowed beyond a typical Gen 2 paddle) will gain popularity due to paddles hitting ever harder, and a lot of people saying enough is enough and not wanting to risk injury. This happened in softball, where crazy hot softball bats caused the rise of wood only bat leagues. I quit playing softball 15 years ago when I saw a second baseman in a supposed rec league take a 1 hopper hit by a crazy hot bat off his forehead, and he was in a coma for days before thankfully recovering.
