During the early days of WW2 I lived in Hampstead. On a Sunday morning my dad used to take me out for a walk while my mum got the dinner ready. Sometimes we would walk up to the whitestone pond, and very often the air raid siren would go off as we reached it. The siren itself was just across the road from the pond. We used to stand close to the siren and look out over London (the trees were much smaller then and we had a good view) and watch the bombers coming towards us. The nearest we got to the enemy planes was once when a Me110 swooped low over the vale of health.

Great stuff Joolz. You were standing outside the house owned by Peter Cook in Church Row. The East End Victorians called it 'Appy Ampstead' and then they walked down the hill to the Bull and Bush pub. You mention the water. Just past Whitestone Pond there is the Vale of Health where people in the 17th century went to escape the plague.

Holly Bush My favourite pub in London! I've come down from Scotland for a London break a couple of times in recent years. I brought a book from my local library - 32 London Walks. I must have now done c 25 of them. So I recognise a lot of locations Jools visits, e.g. Goldfinger's flats, Smithfields etc. Very enjoyable series. When I win the Euromillions I'll buy a place in Hampstead - out of the way a bit, but easy access to the centre.

I used to drink in Jack Straw's Castle in the 80s and 90s when it was a pub. It is now luxury flats. Opposite it and behind the war memorial, is Heath House, which from 1790 was the home of Sir Samuel Hoare, a wealthy Quaker banker, who was one of the prime campaigners for the abolition of slavery. William Wilberforce and Elizabeth Fry were often at Heath House.

Hampstead is my native home town, too, where I was born and raised... I really think about it a lot, there are so many great memories of my childhood here, and I miss it. Not just because I'm from Hampstead, but it's always been one of my most favourite ever areas of London and all. I used to attend services at St. John-at-Hampstead Parish Church with my mum (rest her good soul) - not l'm religious in any way (which l'm not whatsoever), but my mum did a lot of helping out in the community with friends she knew at the church, and she herself did have quite a religious background and upbringing. But she never ever forced it down my throat, or anyone else's... May you rest in peace Mum.😢

No.2 Willow Road reminds me strongly of the house Ben Aaronovitch describes in 'Broken Homes' as the home of fictuous architect Erik Stromberg.
