what makes machinima's demise so fascinating was how it really reflected the fate of many of its contemporaries. look at similar organizations like channel awesome and rooster teeth, they operated the same exact way machinima did and are now essentially burning down to the ground. hell, yogscast is a mere shadow of its peak. it's not struggling or as corrupt but yogscast isn't exactly much of a powerhouse like it was 5 or so years ago. many of these network organizations are either burning to the ground or are basically at their weakest point they've ever been and are not showing signs of recovering and this is despite the fact that content creator is becoming the career people want to do the most as of now which would make you think these machinima like networks would be thriving with talent rather than being mere relics of the past. it makes you question if machinima crashing and burning was the beginning of the demise of these network based channels with machinima being the 1st domino to fall

One of the biggest items within the business world, which is not talked about at all, is the exit strategy. No matter the venture, no matter the idea, if you lack a concrete way out, then you will find yourself in trouble. With hindsight, I would of written the company charter in such a way that would dissolve the company if a certain earnings threshold is not met. In addition, since the company relied heavily on KZbin, and the partner program was well known at that time, then I would work out a contract with KZbin in such a manner as to be a hiring agency, or simply poached completely dry for some flat some. In either case, the company's focus shifts from trying to be a mini-youtube, to being a strong contender for a venting company, or an easy way out when things go terribly. Doubling down on bad money always goes worse. The ones you hear about in history class are the exception to the rule, not the rule itself.

I know I'm a few months late in this but it seems relevant given the video. In 2012, I was a contestant on a show that aired on the Machinima Prime channel called The Controller. During the filming of that show, they had signed me to one of these Machinima contracts at the time despite not having a KZbin channel at the time. This contract was the start of KZbin for me but I soon found out during filming that Machinima leadership were super scummy. They had tried to replace me early in filming due to not being picked internally. Instead, I was picked by Bunim and Murray Productions. When the show aired a few months later, Machinima hosted a live stream with the cast but replaced me with another Machinima content creator. This stream led to Hecz, xJawz, Temper and others at Machinima talking shit about me during the live stream. At the time, I was signed to Fnatic's Halo team so it was basically me vs Machinima even though they had signed me to a contract during filming of the show. So they signed me to a contract during filming and promised to work with me on my channel. Then proceeded to try to replace me during filming for one of their own creators and then talked shit about me during a live stream to promote the show. I proceeded to move on from Machinima. I ended up working a deal with Twitch with Fnatic's help and left KZbin behind at the time.

That wasn't the founder. 🙃

Not sure if you know, but DSP is planning on using this video for one of his begging streams.

The sad reality is Machina probably could have continued to exist in a smaller capacity if they stepped back from the spotlight and focused on just being an MCN. MCN's still exist, people still use them. Screenwave is probably the biggest around still, at least in America. But, no one hosts their videos on just Screen-Wave's channel/site(s) Screenwave just works behind the scenes, gets their cut. There's a conversation to be had still about just how useful MCN's are, again Screenwave as an example their only client they seem to really do anything for is AVGN, everyone else is left to fend for themselves for the most part. But an MCN could still absolutely function as a Middle-Man between Content Creators, Sponsors and the Platform(s) them/it's self. In theory an MCN could handle the Logistical side of the business while you deal with just the creative side.

I'll never forgive Machinima for buying up some of my favorite machinimas and either never continuing them or destroying them and then cancelling them

The deletion of their entire catalogue is something I will always be angry at. Every now and then I will get a wave of nostalgia around creators like Seananners and Tejbz. I search out their old content but half of it doesn't even exist anymore and internet archival wasn't a hot topic 10-15 years ago

DSP will milk this video hard since he partnered with Machinima. Machinima died after getting too big for their boots and forcing creators to a horrible contract.

I was introduced to Two Best Friends (now defunct) through Machinima. This story is one of the biggest arguments for why third-party internet archiving is extremely important. Peoples’ entire backlog, and viewers’ most nostalgic memories, just gone up in flames in a millisecond. It’s criminal, is what it was.

Let's be honest Dspgaming killed machina... anything dsp touches turns to garbage almost instantly

The reverse Midas. Anything he's involved with ends up in bankruptcy and failure, and DSP will gloat how they deserved it and he hated them, a 180 on how he acted when they were associated with him.

Machinima was one of the first youtube channels I found as a kid. I watched every two best friends play and Christopher Walkenthroughs when I found the channel I was hooked. Same with the actual machinima's they did in Super Mario 64 and Grand theft auto 4. I hate that all the videos are gone but I'm glad that the company can't screw creators anymore

Boy i kinda remember growing through this transition, going from being subscribed directly for all the fun content, to just being subscribed to promotional channels that would just tell you when it showed up on machinima cause it was just so overinflated with random vids (which even the promo channels started to make fun of), to just sorta forgetting machinima was even around after all my favorite creators left

Thank you for making this video. I was never into the YT sphere when I was a teen, despite me playing video games. When I used YT then it was almost always for music. So whenever Machinima was mentioned I always heard it in the context of them being super shitty to content creators and cc's speaking out against them.

Early Machinima upload of Red vs Blue were unauthorized (they stole it), founder of Rooster Teeth Burnie Burns has said. Only years later when Rooster Teeth had begun doing sponsored content with Machinima, did episodes begin being licensed legally (Burnie claimed their major reason for their short partnership was to have Machinima respond to their request). 5:06
