Home is where his parents were. But they died so now his home felt burnt and he felt alone everywhere. But in Europe they understand him, there are multiple references like papaoutai (where are you dad). And pa or papa means dad in the Dutch language. The style is some EDM, happy hard-core and hardstyle. So it's like old upbeat Dutch music styles combined.

tom, your reaction shows perfectly why people shouldn't dismiss all unconventional upbeat songs calling them "joke entries". i love the creativity of the fun songs this year. personally i have estonia, croatia and the netherlands in my top 5 and while i enjoy them mostly for how fun musically they are, i also appreciate the message!
@Funkytrip737 ай бұрын
Exactly. It may have a bit of a joke entry vibe, but the song structure is really crafty, with little bits of extras in every piece of the track. There is a reason the Dutch has so many top DJs.

Totally agree, I subscribed to Tom after watching his No Rules video where he was one of the people that totally saw the vision and the appeal, while ignoring the randos online that were (ironically) taking it so seriously, despite that being the exact anti-message of the song. Tom really has a knack for seeing and understanding why countries send the entries they do even when others don't think they deserve it!

@@jijitters i cannot even begin to imagine why people upon seeing a performance and song that's intentionally a pastiche of 90s dance music would decide to treat it like it was the most serious thing in the world. a hilarious reaction from a fandom that also loves to complain whenever too many ballads get chosen to represent the countries. we need variety and fun songs that are not a solo artist pop songs are most welcome!!!

Tom, you know what: every time I've listened to this song, I've started to cry at the last part. My daughters were jumping through the living room in the gabber beat, and the final part comes and Dad's tearing up. It hits so hard; I totally get your reaction. It probably won't be a surprise that this isn't my style of music at all. In the 90s when this type of music was literally everywhere in the Netherlands, I was happy to let it pass me by. Now, it does feel kinda nostalgic, although I'd still never listen to this type of music outside of Eurovision. I didn't feel very positive on first listen, although I was immediately drawn to the contrast between the happy hardcore style and the lyrics, which I actually find really sad. There's such a sense of melancholy there. As Deban from Wiwibloggs put it: longing and belonging. That's just it. It's already in the title: Europa is of course Europe in Dutch, and papa is dad. Well and then the end hits. Wow. The crowd in Malmö will probably be jumping along on this, and I'm so curious how the intensity of the lyrics will be translated to the performance. Am I proud of this? Well.. yeah, even if it's not my kind of music, there really is something special here. ❤

awwww i love that you watch it with your daughters, and that you both have very different reactions to it. that's cool to know some of the history about this music. honestly i didnt know it existed until i did that original video reacting to him being announced. 8:52 - I think the image of the elderly gentleman and the kid are both supposed to be Joost. Notice how they have the same clothing and glasses as Joost. There's the face value aspect of the song that's happy, fun and pro-European, but the deeper layer shows so much impact - the wink to Papaoutai, the song being about belonging somewhere, and how, although we can try to escape our feelings by physically/ literally moving away, you can't escape. The image of the burning house. A brilliant song that has so many layers - so unexpected. Joost has done it! I'm proud of him as a Dutchie. Lovely reaction to see, Tom. Much love to you
@QnA226 ай бұрын
I interpreted the burning house differently. At the start the house, which is made up of different EU countries styles, is whole. He sings, let's come together, this is our last chance. Then in the end the European house burns. It's a warning that it's a possible future. We never know what you miss until it's gone forever, just like his parents.
@JelleTheTunes6 ай бұрын
I also interpret it as him as being all three. He has been fleeing from pain all over Europe, but it's not fulfilling. In the end hefound that his parents are always with him anyway ('ik heb gelukkig geen visum nodig om bij je te zijn'). Current Joost is saying 'it's OK, we/I've come full circle; we can safely burn this pain, so that we all (kid, current and old man Joost) can say goodbye to pain and just enjoy good memories of mum and dad.'

Joost Klein dedicated this song to his father, who died when he was 12 years old due to cancer. His dad taught him that the world has no actual boundaries. His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision. At first I was disappointed by this song because the first three minutes had little to do with the last couple of seconds which hit like a truck. Or so it seemed, since later on I realised that in between stating superficial benefits of being part of Schengen, he also put some lyrical gems here and there to build up to that emotional ending such as happily stating he's going to stay in Europe until he dies, Stromae, the visual aid of father and young Joost as well as literally stating he seeks validation (that others may get from their parents). And if those elements translate well on stage, suddenly it is a contender to win over first-time viewers as well. The field is wide open, so even Joost can dream big

You know the thing is that Joost also is such a marketing genius by only uploading it to Eurovision channel and creating a TikTok dance. Also adding some really deep emotional piece in it at the end is perfect. He uses biology for this since he knows that hardcore buildup is perfect and then increases emotion by the hard bass of the hardcore and then a beautiful transition to the emotional part. This makes sure that people are high in their emotions resulting in the emotional part hitting very hard.

For the really first time i love the song from my country and really hope to get one of the Top from Eurovision this year!🙏 I also like France with Mon Amour, that one is beautiful, but Europapa means so much with a true message and means a lot for people to be one in Europe! By the way; i like it a lot how you did this video with all your thoughts! That is epic because so far you are the only one and i love that!

Such an intelligent reaction to this song. The way it can get you to a maximum high then punch you right in the gut and immediately bring the tears is SO impressive. The power of music!

I am one of the over six hundred songwriters who entered this year's Dutch Selection but did not win. I was asked not to react in public about the selection process. So only two things, you need good songwriters and artists ready to take a risk for defending their country (like Dustin the Turkey did :-). And you need a selection system that is able to recognize talent. Looking back at 2019 our selection system works. (Duncan Lawrence won, I had never heard of the guy) but not faultless. Who represented the Netherlands back in 2023 ? I don't remember. I had bever heard of Joost Klein either but I have high hopes. I feel he much more represents my Dutch culture, and how I see Hollands place in Europe than Duncan Lawrence. So hopefully see you next year in Rotterdam.

Aaah having some much fun watching your reaction, especially at the breakdown! I was the same, laughter and then near tears at the ending. ❤

This is my fave this year. Reading a lot of comments and the lyrics are a lot deeper then they sound at first. The chorus, the drop, the ending it's a 10/10! Also it's gone up to 5th in the odds now.

i see the whole "joke entry" discourse in fandom sometimes as the "modern art" discourse that permeates art critiques. is the banana stuck to the wall 'real art' or not? some people see it as an insult to artists while others look for the message beyond the superficial. anyway, good video, thoroughly enjoyed!

I'm crying too Tom. This hits hard as I lost my dad two years ago to COVID. Breathe by Vladana (Montenegro, 2022) had exactly the same effect on me too.

Little fun fact about the title Europapa. It's a pun. Europe in dutch is Europa, and dad is papa. So it is a mix of these two words.

I don't know exactly how popular he is in Germany, but I think Joost will do fine with the Belgian televote and jury. He's not completely unknown as an artist and he was also a contestant on a quiz show (De Slimste Mens) last season. I mean, even my 70-year-old mother knows who he is, so he's got some name recognition (and she likes the song!) But on the other hand I can already see people online dismissing this as "noise" and a joke entry, which is a real shame.
