This is great. The three dimensionality of color spaces is something not a lot of people really understand, so I appreciate you taking the time to explain how complicated the various attempts at managing the color space really is. Different Log converters tend to have different priorities, and yours are obviously focus on the blending of colors and more fully saturating the color space. Nicely displayed. This is also why I started focusing less on just having 'more dynamic range' and more on what am I doing with my midtones, highlights, and shadows. We get our best and most vibrant colors in the midtones so we should manage our light and our exposure to use that well.

Great, really helpful video, thanks! Just one point of clarification for those who are interested. 18:05 The "safety line" on the Premiere vector scope - connecting the six inner boxes - is an indication of whether colours fit within what is safe for broadcast (PAL/NTSC). That is, it shows where colours will be clipped because of bandwidth limitations (with a safety margin) within the broadcasting system. So while it might be helpful in this situation as a rule of thumb, that's not strictly what it's there for, especially if the intention is to produce the most saturated colours that the colourspace itself will allow. The six outer boxes on the vectorscope equate to the remaining six corners of the cube (after black-white) in the 3D Lut Creator vectorscope, so these are the limits of the colourspace. Unless you are creating content for broadcast, it's debatable whether you need to stick within the safety line - although on the other hand you never know what it's going to look like on someone else's screen!

very informative, I learned a lot! I do however have a couple tips for you: 1 - The pushing your face again glass metaphor did not work to well, perhaps it wouldve been easier if you just explained that you get less diverse colours if the gradients clip or something? It's a hard concepts to explain though. 2 - Given that this method would work with any camera shooting with a flat color profile, I guess you could appeal to a much broader audience with a less specific title. Nonetheless, awesome video! Keep it ut:)

Great video, thanks so much for posting! I'm currently using the Leeming LUT, and one thing I find particularly useful about it is that it works in any light as long as I'm doing a custom white balance when I shoot. What are your thoughts on the leeming LUTs for skin tones? Curious on your thoughts on that.
@JooWorks5 жыл бұрын
I like the Leeming LUT from a technical point of view. Really well done, but the colors are not accurate and I don't think I like the aesthetics that much either. I would like to talk to mister leeming and and as why hi makes the lut as he does for the look is off but other than that it's great, no banding no stress to the image. I use it as a bench mark when I'm trying to make my LUTs "smooth".
@tomcypher38645 жыл бұрын
Great research! By the way, I saw that you had a sharp edge at the top of your cube (your LUT), which probably represents white (and, because of that, represents also highlight rolloff). Did you try to get this edge soft (like other edges of the cube)? Maybe that could help get rid of the coloured ring around the sun?
@JooWorks5 жыл бұрын
The sharp edge is actually the sun fixing. The highlight is closer to the neutral axis making the top sharp. :-D You are really observative.
