That channel mixer has changed my entire life. I've been getting so mad with my gh5 lately because i'm constant fighting to get my skin tones right and they were always green/yellow and everyone looked ill. I watched one of your videos before i got vlog so never applied it. I wish i came back sooner, ive fallen in love with this camera again. I've been applying it to all my old footage where I was blaming it on the dark conditions and it's just fixed it all in one click. I honestly can't thank you enough. subbed

Hi. I m working in GH5s panasonic . I m working the bracheting mode with multiple exposures. Then working the pictures in camera raw. Merging the hdr images and then continue the post processing in photoshop. I ve recently discovered logs and luts. I m not so sure how as a photographer this would give me more dynamic and tonal range than the procedure i m already following. However i find it very useful for filmmakers and videographers. I would like to enlighten me more about that if i m wrong. love your work. Thank you in advance :)

Thank you for your video tutorial - I really like your approach to working with V-log. One question. When your working with v-log can I ask how you set up your sequence in premiere - do you have your colour space set to a Red 709 work space or do you start with a REC 2100 HQ? Just when you drag your clips and add the Lut to change the colour space to 709 - would that negatively effect it? Would love to see a quick video showing your import and export process Thanks for your time Best C

Great work! How do you make your channel mixer numbers? I work with sony, and tried lut creator and colorchecker but the colors are way off every time.. Do you have a consistent way og making the colors right? Or is it maybe because i dont have the bit depth to work with as you have?
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Bjørn Pierri Enevoldsen hmm... what was your exact process in 3d lut creator?
@pierrienevoldsen6 жыл бұрын
I open a frame in lut creator with my color checker in it, and click on the little colorchecker icon. choose x-rite, place the color grid and click match and export the lut. but when i try to use it in photoshop or premiere on a clip with my same Slog it is way over saturated and off in the colors with a lot of banding to... I can maybe send you examples later if i may? I'm off to work now, so a bit later perhaps?
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Rule of thumb is to get as close to the end result without any "interpretation" like setting correct values into the program and only after that calibrate with the x-rite. So Log you need to set the channel mixer first (small arrow in top right part of the colour are and choose "create a colour space transform matrix" Then create you matrix) Then set your log settings, then your exposure, then your WB and then you do you calibration. Calibration is always the last thing you do.

Hi. Amazing video! I recently got my V-Log and I have a question - what settings do you use for the color profile? Do you have a specific Sharpness or Noise Reduction values set? I like the video but don't understand one thing. In 6:41 - why are you using the V-Log to Rec709 LUT in the Creative -> Look? I thought the LUTs are supposed to be used in Basic -> LUT so that all the colour and contrast modifications are applied AFTER the LUT (in the same way as in your first example where you simulate the LUT by Channel Mixer and RGB Curves tweaks). Or not?
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Try it and you know. When you edit the fooatge as v-log before the Lut, the results are simply better. :-)

@@JooWorks OK thanks, will try that

I tried to use your numbers but in my case, the v-log 10bit footy from the GH5s had crazy magenta/green noise on the skin and in the shadows. Is this caused by the different colorspace? For me the Panasonic Varicam35 LUT works best to translate to Rec.709 right now but it is still not perfect.
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
beeftownskate after making this video it has come to my attetion that the channel mixer is somehow flawed in premiere. It causes this noise and banding. You can try it in resolve and the export it as a lut for premieree

I really like what you've done in this video and I use it for reference a lot. I've noticed though, when I use the same settings you have in channel mixer the pixelation and compression of the footage really shows. In addition to that it causes my renders to slow down greatly. Can you explain these things? Thanks.
@JooWorks5 жыл бұрын
If you use premiere, the channel mixer in premier is apparently quite bad. Slow and migth only work in 8bits. I have started to use the channel mixer so that I set lower saturation values to the matrix and the rise the saturation only for midtones. This will give me a cleaner end result.
@DTChunky5 жыл бұрын
@@JooWorks The values you have in channel mixer makes the footage look so much better! But it's so slow and almost crashing my fast machine. Is there a LUT you could make that creates the same values as your channel mixer but doesn't slow down renders?

First time recording in V-Log on my GH5: Why does it look so grainy? It looks very distressed after using these settings, but even before editing it looked like my ISO was over 1600. It was at 400, which my camera didn't let me go under when I was in V-Log mode. I recorded in MOV 8bit 60p. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong?
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Rossano try to add as much contrast as other profiles and bring black down as much. Is the noise still visible? Or do the opposite: take a shot with other profiles and bring the shadows up as much as with v-log, is the grain similar? In general it's better to over expose with log and then bring the exposure down in post.
@elizabethrossanofilms6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for replying! I took all my footage on the whole shoot in V-log, thinking it was going to universally improve my footage, so I don't really have a direct comparison. But I've been shooting on my GH5 using mostly Cine-D for about a year and I've never had this problem except in very low light situations where I had to bump up my ISO. I suspect that my problem isn't solvable because I simply didn't realize that I should over-expose, like you said. I'm used to erring on the other side, so I may have ruined my footage. :'(
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Rossano send me some short clips or stills here: joo.works/feedback and I'll take a look does it look off to my eyes.

I took a look. Did you shoot in 8 bits? If so that is causing most of the banding and noise. The darker shot was really dark, the highest IRE was about 35... So underexposure is clearly on reason. AND premiere pro's channel mixer apparently is causing banding to the footage as well... It's not really good... :-/ So next time try out ETTR, here is a video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z3-3Yo14l7CibZY

Where did you get the numbers for the channel mixer. You criticized youTubers for using their eyes - but no explanations as to how or why each change in the channel mixer is determined. Telling people to copy those numbers is not educational for them. They may as well apply the LUT.
@JooWorks6 жыл бұрын
Jim Robinson The LUTs inside the kit are done with the channel mixer, but there is bit more magic done when it comes to the gamma correction and out of gamut colours, so I wound recommend using the luts. I would really like to nerd out and explain how the channel mixer works, because it's so powerful tool, but for now I'll just say that these number have been copied from official numbers given in white papers.
