My ex gf used to sigh at me about stuff like that. I’ve always liked cars and when I’d point out a cool car I liked while driving she would sigh and roll her eyes, and she wasn’t joking. I know a lot people think dudes shouldn’t be so emotional but it really did hurt, especially because I never treated her that way. I would always confront everything she did like that, because I’m a firm believer in communication but she would always do exactly what Peterson mentioned, “Whaaat? I’m just sighing oh my god calm down.” She would never communicate with me. I found out after we broke up that she had been cheating on me with my brother in law (my sister’s husband) for over a year. If you’re in an unhealthy relationship get out before you marry them. I’m glad I never proposed.

If someone is unhappy they can fucking leave and not stick around and waste the other person’s time, which I should remind you is extremely valuable.

Right now he's taking a massive barrage of flak from media that have just discovered him. Their main straw man attack is that he addresses males only, and fosters a "troll army" of misogynistic A-holes, which of course is completely false. He's got so much to offer, and I'm sure he's got tons of material on relationships. I just hope he stays away from religion, that's probably a brick wall he doesn't want to take a run at.

@persis2223
@persis2223 4 жыл бұрын
I've always said that *unmet expectations* is the biggest relationship killer. Resentment would be a symptom of that like anger, hostility, frustration, and everything else that comes from not having your needs met. In this example the woman had the expectation of the man coming to look at the bird and probably saying something positive to get confirmation of a human's inherent need for connection. It's not just emotional things, either. So, you have the expectation of getting help with house chores, yard work, child rearing, or some other daily task but your partner isn't meeting that for some reason then it causes negative feelings that can pile up. My man does good at exceeding expectations most of the time. He humors me when I get to talking about plants or video games. Like i do when he's on about tools or cars. He does things I ask him to do in a timely manner... A relationship is only hard if you have a hard time caring for someone's needs other than your own.

@Untitled 1 I get it but it's hard a lot of the time. I'm a really anticonfrontational and often find myself getting way more upset at the prospect of bringing up stuff for fear of making things worse or starting a fight. It's something I try to work on as an individual but years of emotional abuse from my mother makes it practically impossible to talk about stuff that upsets me. Every person has their baggage and part of tending to someone else in a relationship is paying attention to the other person and their needs. Trying to understand where they're coming from and having patience where their weaknesses are. My man does a pretty good job of seeing what irritated me or seeing where I'm struggling and fixing it or trying to talk about it. I do the same for him. Sometimes all you got to do to start the flow of conversation is poke the crack in the dam.
@persis2223
@persis2223 4 жыл бұрын
@Untitled 1 the problem is why let it get to that point? The point where you're screaming and yelling. Why not care enough for your partner that you're aware of their problems and sensitivities? I'm not talking about thinking for them but just understanding that sometimes they physically or emotionally need something and fulfilling that need well before it becomes a point of contention. If anything they're doing *your* thinking for you instead of the other way around if you have to have them tell you everything. Also, they may be telling you and your just not listening. It takes a lot of breaths and sighs to blow a balloon to it's popping point. The shoes you leave in the doorway your SO complains about all the time, the dirty dishes all over the house, the clothes in the floor beside the hamper, the side the shower curtain is on, the comment you make about a family member, or whatever little trivial thing that they're "nagging" you over... That's them saying something. You can't be surprised when they've been filling that balloon, for however long, and you've not been paying attention. You shouldn't be surprised when it pops and you stand there all surprised pikachu "why didn't you say something? " ... when they probably already did. Hell, even just calmly asking about whatever it is (bc you were paying attention) and getting a conversation started is enough to confront the problem. Sometimes, the person with the problem, just has a hard time starting that conversation. Which is what I mean by being anticomfrontational. I have a very hard time expressing I'm irritated with how something is or something that happened. Mainly bc I grew up being punished for being anything other than perfectly happy and grateful with the way things were..... It's something I'm growing out of. It's not my man's responsibility to deal with that particular baggage but he's sensitive to it. He understandsand notices when I might beer biting my tongue and just asks. A simple question might elicit a reaction that could solve the problem well before it builds to a conflict. Sometimes people just need help. We rarely really get into big fights. By rarely I mean we've had two in the 6 years we've been together. We have our quibbles but it's a lot less stressful to just deal with it before it gets there. This isn't just romantic relationships but all relationships. I expressed my being overwhelmed with a problem and my friend just came over and helped me. She saw a need and fulfilled it. It's not hard to just pay attention. You don't need to be so self absorbed that you have to have everything spoon fed to you. You'll NEVER find someone that will put all the effort and work into a relationship and be happy with that.

Persis 22 Perfect. I was engaged to a beautiful woman and unfortunately became disabled after a surgery. She has two kids, one 12 and 19. The 19 yo has a medical marijuana card for fibromyalgia. However neither kids have any discipline in achieving things. They were molly coddled and had zero chores. I am a damn good chef been told. My fiancé would do dishes..great trade off because they can’t boil water. But the oldest would sit in her room and smoke pot all day, come down for dinner, blow smoke in my face (which I hate) never offered to help prepare dinner or anything. Hell if her mom was sick she would not even offer to clean dishes. One of my med conditions is chronic fatigue and have very limited energy. So to help out the fiancé when she was sick I would offer to clean and did. My nature to help. Hell the youngest would be told to clean her room and three weeks later it would still not be done. It became a health hazard. The mom would relent and give the phone back after a day.. I should have saw the warning signs early on in our 5 year relationship when the oldest (age 15/16] literally walk over something on the floor, pull a few weeds or by an empty pet water bowl and she would be asked to do these things and her immediate rude response is “not my fu$king job” or I did not sign up for this. Neither one would do basic children chores. So it fell to me and my fiancé. I had literally no energy and she ran out of energy, so we had no quality time together. The past year, I pleaded for more help because I was rapidly going down hill. The fiancé says she is working on it with the girls...they had it “rough” with their bi polar dad.....the help would last one day.. I became resentful for constantly asking for help when at their ages they should do it automatically. I started to withdraw and became very irritable at times. because I felt I nothing more then a servant, at 50 years old nobody should feel that way. I busted my ass for that family and got nothing in return. Beginning of April, I did not sleep for days due to pain and this vid bs. I wanted the day off from cooking and she said no and I blew up how lazy the kids were (I rarely lose my cool) I said I was leaving for a day to rest and she permanently kicked me out. Well I am basically homeless, still waiting for social security and have zero money and started to fall into a deep despair until I read your comment. I love them very much but it may be a blessing in disguise. I started to despise the lack of basic child responsibility because it was affecting my health. I was trying to help the oldest not fall into an addiction trap by locking herself in her room. I was trying to convey the importance of getting outside and pulling a few weeds to get sunlight and have a routine to like empty the dishwasher at a certain times everyday because without those things depression will engulf you. But the mom thought I was attacking her and “parenting style” because I thought kids by the age of 10 should have responsibilities and be held accountable but I was made the bad guy for asking for help for a year... Sorry for the long version, it helped me immensely tonight and can maybe sleep.

Casually "investigate" a person without commitment so you can easily walk away when you catch crazy, aggressive & other various ego-power tripping tendencies. People are entrenched in their habits and beliefs. Learn to walk.

So true. No need to rush into a relationship... give yourself time to just be around a person and go from there. Reasons why relationships of long time friends tend to last I think. You put on your social personality before you walk into the world and there's only a few amount of people you'd feel free to take it off in front of. I think that's when you see more of the real person. When people get to be themselves and not trying to impress you or trying to say the right things.

Its hard sometimes forcing myself to be hopeful and optimistic, it takes practice believe me :(.. :) almost everyone is hurting over someone, like we so obviously are. Stay true to yourself and know we're never alone in feeling hurt for whatever reason. I'm not saying take comfort from others misfortunes.. I'm just saying feeling like we are is not unique to us, bt rather universal and shows us how good we can be, cause we can empathise, hurt and love. Some people don't havr that luxury. (Also they don't argue in circles either, they get to the point pretty quickly...)

I know it’s supposed to be for romantic relationships, but this reminded me of my relationship with my mother. I resent her for so many things that I have forgotten but never forgiven. So every time we interact I immediately notice her flaws or quirks that irritate me. She picks up on it and usually gets defensive, acuses me of bullying her or mistreating her, and then I get mad because I am being accused when I haven’t even said or done anything, but I am guilty because I still hold hateful feelings towards her. I don’t know how to reset our relationship.

We often go back for more, even if we have not had our needs met by our parents for decades. It’s a deep hunger to finally be nurtured, seen, and loved by those who brought us into being. But it’s been my experience that those who cannot meet those needs seldom change. Not because they don’t want to, but because they just aren’t up to the task. They don’t have it in them. They are in too much pain themselves. If you are someone who keeps going back for more, you have to stop. You are holding yourself hostage. It’s no longer them- it’s now you. It’s the unconscious hope to finally feel seen and loved that is wounding you. The key to your liberation is to finally see them for who they are. Really see them, the way you want to be seen. See them in their context, their woundedness, their limitations. Once you do, you no longer imagine them as adults capable of meeting your needs. Because they aren’t. They’re lost children, stumbling over their own patterns and conditioning. They can’t meet your needs because nobody ever met theirs. Of course, reaching this stage of awareness is no easy thing, because you have to achieve this without getting what you needed from them to grow developmentally into adulthood. It’s a kind of catch 22, one that requires that you fully see them as the fractured humans that they are with no part of you imagining them as adults with something they can offer you. It’s a huge and difficult step. But it’s the only step you can take. And when you take it- I mean, really take it- you become free to get those needs met by those who can actually meet them. You become free to truly live. - Jeff Brown

A huge thing I had to get over that helped my relationship immensely was expecting what I wanted out of a relationship to come "naturally". I wanted everything in the relationship to play out perfectly like it was fate, because that would mean it was all "real". I didn't want to have to ask for anything, I wanted him to read me and listen to my implications and then give me what I wanted. Like some adventurous romantic comedy or something. I listened to Jordan Peterson about not punishing someone for something good they did, which I found myself doing a lot. Then I would straight up say what I wanted in the relationship and be extra loving and happy when he does it. Now it does come naturally and communication isn't uncomfortable anymore. It's way more realistic too, I was living in a fantasy.

Took me a long time to realize I’m in a bad relationship. My bf snaps at me so much and he’s rarely ever interested in anything that I talk about but he wants me to always be interested in what he’s interested in. It’s like the relationship has to revolve around him. I was so unhappy for so long.
@charlesbell5500
@charlesbell5500 4 жыл бұрын
Well, you have to understand that one shouldn't impose their interests onto others, because they might not share them. And forcing them to show fake interest in the things you want feels like a chore to them, which annoys them. So, you should definitely tell him the things you're not interested in that he always talks about so he can stop, and you should do the same. Train yourselves not to bring up each other's triggers of annoyance, because that could lead to frustration, and consequently, hatred. The relationship shouldn't revolve around him because you guys should carry an equal weight of relevance. You need to think of yourselves as co-owners of a business, of which each of you are 50% owners. So, you have to make your business partner happy to run a successful business. It seems like you guys have both annoyed each other with the "bird" thing. It would behoove you guys to find common interests. You don't have to give up yet, keep going, but you have to straighten some things out. Good luck with it. I believe that, in order to maintain a healthy relationship, both parties should always look to improve it, find ways to make it better in every aspect all the time. It's extremely difficult, but it's the only way because things will always settle once you relax, so you have to keep adapting, all the time. Most people get to a level that's barely tolerable and they concede to having a sub-par relationship for the rest of their lives, and that's no way to live. I hope this helps, but just ask yourself how much you really care, and if you don't care enough to always seek to improve it, end it.

@charlesbell5500
@charlesbell5500 4 жыл бұрын
Exactly, although this may not seem like a crucial issue, I believe that you shouldn't be expected to let your spouse say or do things that annoy you. Everyone enjoys different things, and you can't impose your likes onto them. In this case, some people might not see the beauty in birds (I don't know how anyone could because they're fucking disgusting, but that's my opinion). It's like trying to get someone to convert to your religion just because you think it's the best, well they might not agree with you. And in that situation, you're forcing them to accept it. However, it's still the sighing spouse's fault because they've failed to tell their partner that they don't care about birds. If they did, their partner would just admire them by themselves silently, and there's nothing wrong with that. And if the "bird" spouse doesn't respect that, now they're the asshole. There are certain things you need to "train" your partner to do, which Peterson talked about before, so that you create a peaceful environment. I don't like the word "training" though because it has implications of dominance and a sense of bossing the person around. It's not that, because both partners should do it, I see it as necessary micro-adjustments for better long-term living conditions.

Funny, because I personally love birds and I point to them whenever out and about. They bring me joy for some reason. Moral of the story, my friend of 18 years is one of my most treasured friendships. I don't see her as often as one should (as adult friendships usually go due to family and etc), but she has literally did the "oh well, look at that!". She is not a fan of birds. Not overly disgusted with them, but has a neutral appreciation. But gosh, it sustains me and makes me happy and feel loved. She does it consistently, in almost any situation. I have many other types of friendships, but she is only one who genuinely lets the image of what I want her to see, get into her head for a couple of seconds. I notice others try, but it is a superficial glance and shared glee. Literally acknowledging what I "see", is a very simple and, yet, essential foundation for ANY relationship. It is not perfect (there is no perfect or idyllic relationship) but things are healthy and easy when something as stupid as "looking at a bird they are pointing at" comes into play. I do the same thing for her. Recently, I did this with a dating situation. He dismissed these little innocent attentions to life around me. I tried to do the same with little things he wanted me to notice. Not reciprocated. Got gruff rebuffs. Axed that. I guess this seemingly moronic and insignificant act of paying attention to what a partner, friend, or child cares about or is drawn to (even for a few seconds), is an indicator of presence and attention. These are like psychological "comfort touches" like when a child touches his mom after spending a few minutes playing with other children on the playground. Peterson is on point with saying that there is something under the surface when there is an outward manifestation of the dialogue "Honey, look at that seal on the rock!" Spouse: "Not now honey.' (even when he or she is not preoccupied enough to not pay attention). The concept of relationship is connection and metaphorically touching base with someone if they are still "here" with you or attuned to your world- even for a mere couple of seconds. This is pivotal to maintaining the "long-term" in a relationship when your mind is scattered else-where to other people, places, and issues after the novelty or romance wears off. Peterson is rare because his abstractions lead to something concrete for the masses. Many academics fail to bridge that with his style of articulation and conviction.

I don't want to be hard on Kacper, but I appreciate the comment Elsa Grace. :) Made my day! Yeesh, I guess people can't take KZbin comments for what they are... just comments, not thoroughly edited publications. I'm new to commenting on KZbin, so I've learned my lesson to watch out for grammar Nazis who harp on a typo as a failure of the entire message. I cannot honestly remember what happened when I typed that sentence. LOL The point was to contribute something positive, and hopefully, as humbly insightful as can be taken from strangers on an internet forum. I, also, was taken aback by such attention to a petty detail. I don't think Peterson was talking about grammar. LOL However, I was embarrassed. Noted the error. Fixed it. But, it came off mean-spirited. It's hard to tell tone of these comments, hence my wordiness to promote better understanding- as you mentioned. I'm talking too much. :) Enough about feelings. We all have better things to do! Moving on. Have a good day everyone! Thanks again for calling him/her out Elsa!

This is a tough topic for some people, probably in large part because in reality people have trouble discussing their deep feelings, and certainly don't want to in every conversation. In a perfect "idealistic" world, people would be okay with discussing their feelings and desires, to the point that most people would exhaustively talk and negotiate and find that they don't want to be together within a month or so. That would be the point initially of "dating." But realistically, I think the healthiest ideal we can strive for is to relevantly communicate, just as much as we can muster. In the moments we can't, we won't. As soon as there is an open conversation that creates an agreement that a couple should break up, then each of the two can amicably know they tried their best to make it work. Through open communication, they found out that the relationship wasn't meant to be. Then, both parties can go their separate ways happily, in a timely fashion. The current reality we live in commonly ends up being, however, that us imperfect, emotional needy humans settle for a version of reality that is perhaps less accurate and even more hostile, in order to gain comforts such as the warmth of a partner. I've been there, done that. And, I may yet make the mistake again. But, as they say, you live and you learn.

He actually said 'walking on eggs', so it could have been the yolk or the whites too. I mean, you could slip and fall, that's gotta be worse than just walking on the shells.😂😂😂 But seriously though, any time you have to keep something inside, it's either because you chose the wrong person and are just putting up with it, or the communication isn't there. Well at least you learned from your experience, good luck in the future.

You really are fantastic. So many of your videos are ah ha moments for me. I have not only thought I was going crazy but have been told by my classic narcissist wife that I am. It has taken me ten years to understand myself culminating with your videos, I can't thank you enough. I started 10 years ago when I was separated on my journey when a stranger told me to read codependent no more by melody beatty, having had a mother who was an alcoholic since 5th grade, and father who was a pedophile since I was 7 ( that is when I first noticed it, in a movie theater, guns of navarrone). I survived consciously ignoring it while being aware of it and built a wall between him and I, it went on for as long as I can remember. He abused cousins on both sides and caused a nervous breakdown in one of my cousin's friends. He wasnt allowed in my grandmothers (my moms mom) house because he abused her granddaughters. He was violent too toward my mom. I became terrific at ignoring bad behavior that spanned my childhood, that no doubt caused me to be codependent. You have described me clearly in many of your videos, agreeable and nice guy haha! I went back to my wife after 18 months, she seemed so different, but I hear going back together is common with a narc. I came to understand why I am locked into a painful dance with a very nasty and unforgiving and critical narcissist. I could speak to you for hours. Thank you so much.

My wife doesn't sigh, she straight up either says "no, I dont care about your bird" or she starts either crying because the house is not decorated how she likes or because she finds my perfectly organized desk a mess and the garage is also messy and I have too many cloths (which I dont, 3/4th of the closet is hers and she has boxes of unworn cloths in the bedroom)... and of course everything is my fault. Then once we've recovered from that argument, she complains we don't talk like we use to. And she's a butterfly, compared to her mom. So... yea /sigh

You have to understand you're in the wrong here. Instead of blaming her for being rude or hard to deal with, why don't you look within? Why don't you have a serious conversation with her, ask what she wants, and tell her what you want as well. Hold up your end of the bargain, namely, clean up the garage, find a way to keep your desk organized, get your own dresser. Sharing a closet with a woman is a death wish. That way, she can't complain about anything you do. God forbid you come up with a system designed to prevent arguments from even happening in the first place. It can be done. Just take the time to think about it. Thinking is the key to everything. Just be open to other perspectives and put some serious work into fixing the problem. You can do it easily. It's easy! Just think.

Bad relationships start with the proverbial drop in the bucket very few people end up dealing with, which only takes tipping it over and emptying it before it gets full enough to cause a real mess. Emotional boundaries, chains, and resentment is what's inside that turns that significant other into an inhibited predator or prey. I believe this starts as early as the first date, since it seems on a social level we've made it a key point to act "our best" in this mating ritual, which isn't a state of being that can be sustained for long periods of time. It's maddening really. This is why parents all around the world stress "just be yourself" to their children when they present themselves to a potential partner.
