I think that's a little one sided. Seems like that's putting all the success or failure of the relationship on your partner. I think before you ask yourself this kind of question, you better be pretty damn sure YOU are not the one who is making or breaking yourself. Or ask yourself whether YOU are the one making or breaking the relationship. It's very difficult to discern between the two. Sure there are times when one may be with someone seriously abusive and violent, and you obviously should leave in that situation, but even then you have to ask yourself at least once "who am i that allowed me to get in to that situation in the first place," because if you don't ask yourself that it's not unlikely that you'll find yourself in that same situation again.
@bdetert82
@bdetert82 6 жыл бұрын
Would have to disagree with you. You yourself can be a success and be brought down to fail at something because your partner creates such a negative impact on the situation. Obviously if YOU are the destructive force in the relationship then some self reflecting and changes may need to be made.
@topgun213
@topgun213 6 жыл бұрын
haha sounds like you agree with me not disagree with me, because you pretty much repeated what I said. I was just expanding on the idea of "does your partner make you or break you" because that statement completely excludes yourself from the equation, and it's not always self-evident that you are NOT the cause of the problem. I agree that you could be brought down by a single bad partner who is just completely mad and crazy, who wanted to bring you down from the beginning, but I would argue that is the exception and not the rule. Also I'm curious to know how you define "success"

Summary of the relationship advice: Don't make the mistakes that get you into stupid relationships to begin with. Try not to delude yourself any more than is absolutely necessary. When you're in the relationship, tell the person the truth and try to figure out what the truth is for you. Don't put up with any non-sense, and stand up for yourself. Aim towards the good. If you do all those things, then your relationship is probably going to work. If you're trying to do all those things and you have a partner that will not do that, then leave. It's a rare person who won't do that if they're stepped along the way properly and they learn how to do it. Not everyone's like that. You do run into people who are devoted towards mayhem and trouble. But usually a person is a balance of striving for the good and messing about in the hell. You're both like that when you start a relationship and you try to tilt it towards the good. And then you won't run into that problem. But you have to do that right from the beginning of the relationship. It doesn't take that much to corrupt a relationship so that it's not salvageable. 3 or 4 acts of infidelity, you're done. You're never going to come back from that because the fundamental element of trust has been removed. And then you can't communicate with the person because you don't know if they're telling you the truth. So a lot of the issue is don't get into the trouble to begin with.

I would also agree! But I think there is a big difference between being in a relationship with the intent of it working out in the long run (and it doesn't), versus staying in a relationship even though you know that it won't work out in the long run, wasting time that you could be searching for a partner that you actually see a future with.

The issue here is "ideal partner". You get older (and I dont want to be rude, just telling the truth) and as that, fewer men are interested in you and when you write "ideal partner" that means your expectations grow...and there lies the conflict. There is no ideal partner, there never will be. The first thing you should learn about the realationship (and only that) is where you fucked up. It helps.

Yeah. Infidelity. Hitting. Lies. Secret alcohol abuse. Leave. They don't love you. They love only themselves. It's painful to leave but you must do it. Some people are so afraid of the loss of the person they love and the terrible pain that they will feel that they stay. And they live on in misery. Moving far away is an excellent choice. Put some space between the two of you and make a new life.

@@goldkhw I think it’s more that they aren’t loving themselves in the way that is the right way. For whatever reason they can’t see the right way or something is propelling them to do what they do out of a learned ingrained compulsion. I’m not excusing bad behavior, but many people stuck in it are wrestling with demons that you maybe can’t even imagine. It probably is very wise to not start a relationship with them, but I’m just saying you don’t have to demonize them more. They are incapable of loving... that should be pitied, not hated. Hate is the same force that created their situation and by throwing shade on them, you are guilty of keeping them there. Love doesn’t have to come in the form of sacrificing your life for them, but at least sacrifice your hatred for them, which is actually the right thing to do because God asks that of all of us at the very least to love others. Loving others does not mean being all ooey gooy fun and sweetness...it also means to be firm and tell people what they don’t want to hear.

I later learned that his entire early life had been filled with pain. That is why he was incapable of giving love. He had never received any during his formative years. He had been neglected. Advice from a 73-year-old grandma. When you bring home that guy/girl to meet your mom and dad, and they don't like them, you'd better listen (edit 1 yr. later. When I wrote this I was not referring to toxic parents who do not have their child's best interest at heart. I was assuming normal parents, like mine were, who want their child to grow up and have a safe and happy life, like my son does for his daughter. Tragically, not all children are so blessed)

Well...when i see traditional households, the women are so exhausted all the time for decades... This women are not nice to live with anymore. Their bodies and minds are chronic stressed. Lack of sleep. Frustrated. While the males go to work, come home and relax in the sofa in front of the television. Or they go out and drink a beer with their mates. Or do other hobby they like. While the women get up before husband and children, make breakfast, coock lunch, clean, go shopping, go to doctorappointments with sick children, wash clothes, iron, collecting children from school, cook again, dishes, doing homewirk with children, talk with them. Wash them. Go to bed with them, read a story, snuggle with them...Goes up again, makes preparations for the next day, cleans up again, irons. And on and on. Husband want sex. She is exhausted and is scared of the next day and she has to get up early for husbabd and kids. I knew a wife, who got up in the morning at 4 AM and went to sleep at 1 AM. Had a part time job also. She told me, i wush i could blew my kids. Was allway walking quick and had very manly nervous body movements when she did things, was irritated all the time, frustrated, exhausted, wuth dark circkes under her sunken eyes. The husband came from wirk at 6 PM and went to the couch, watching television, until dinner time, stood up, watched television again, until he went to bed at 9 PM. She was still working in the household, cleaning, doing so much stuf, until 1 AM or 2 AM. The garden was full off wild edibles, becayse the husband did not do the garden either. So i did it ( i was a neighbour and a woman ). Very much traditional. A few family members are like that. Even when the women stay home. The women look all totally worn inside out. The men where better looking and relaxed and had better outcomes. The women where just walking atomic bombs. And had mire auto immune diseases. Hair premature falling ouy, more wrinckles. And not feminine anymore, but more manly. I do not know, if women are happy in those traditional households. I wonder even if they have intimacy or sex lives. Even cuddles i do never see. Only frustrated hard faces on the womans face. And the husbands do not look happy either, because probably they miss their wife and how they where when young and flirty. The man looked very relaxed. But women never. Is that how a traditional marriage is? I never wanted even to marry or having a relationship living together... I thought...i never want to look like this women, slaving their asses of, with no or little help from their husband. And not even being cared for or sherished? A man who does not want to do the household together and wants literal a 8 to 5 job... A woman who has to wake up even earlier then him and then goes to bed after him at 1Am? Works around the clock. Chronic extreme lack of quality sleep? Maybe having sex, so your sleep is shorter? Extreme multitasking? I never wanted that. When i see women working so many hours at home and maybe outside also, until 80 years old! While their husband has all day free, but refuses even then to do equal household together with his wife? She works around the clock non-stop, until she dies. The man...well... I never wanted, what they had. I will never...

Now 5 years togehter. So after 3,4,5 month you should realy think if this relationship has a future - but also to find the right one - gibt it always a fair chance

"The kitchen" he spoke about at the end is very meaningful.... I think a lot of us take this for granted nowadays due to career driven attitudes or thinking we can fill this responsibility with something else. There is nothing wrong with tending to the domestic work, and having this clear cut discussion and discipline early in the relationship is important. I wish I had heard this so much sooner... People truly think they're easy to get along with but they are not, including one's self...

When I listen to Jordan Peterson, I feel he tells it as it is with all the practical and realistic detail and we need that. Robert Smith this assumes the hosting video site doesn't censor the content producer (JP), which it has in the past. Or put up pay walls, or fail technically (it has, rarely, but has). Or that JP leaves the content up on YT. He doesn't seem to be a fan of their policies, and may well just dump them in the future.

Joseph G. JP seems to have some alright technical support and contacts in IT. His websites are good, and his next project is a collaborative writing platform. If he and YT ever have a big disagreement, he will probably either leave for something like Vimeo or will just self-host his lectures.

My last relationship began when I was 43 with a high school crush. It lasted 2 yrs. The beginning of our relationship was great. We picked up right where we left off and I kept thinking "this is too good to be true". What I didn't know (not for sure) until he moved in with me 2 yrs later was he was bipolar (and not taking any medication for it) and an alcoholic. There were clues along the way even though we lived an hour and a half apart. Had I paid attention better we would have never lived together. My problem was that I didn't want to lose my soulmate, so I made excuses for his behavior and allowed myself to believe the lies he told me. So, some advice, if there are any red flags pay attention to them. And do not make any important decisions unless you're 100% sure they're meritless.

I’m 50 and reunited with a man I fell in love with at age 17. After him love bombing me, I’m seeing some unhealthy things in him. It’s hard to come to terms with the idea that all those years of loving him from afar may be destroyed so quickly because he can’t get past arguing, refusal to listen or understand, not caring about my feelings, and now he’s started saying mild things to put me down or are just mean. It seems to get worse little by little. I was supposed to travel to see him tomorrow, and I cancelled the trip because of things he said. I needed to set boundaries. And today he started problems again.

@@marcilk7534 Everything you listed sound like bright red flags for an abusive relationship. It could also be maybe a counseling session or two would help. Or taking a step back and letting him know you won't accept that kind of treatment. It's normal to argue, but what you desribe doesn't sound like normal arguing. It could also be influenced by others he may be around who act like that. My daughter's husband when he's been around his dad will start to act like him, a grown 2 year old, tantrums and all.

@@notadumbblond3 I want to suggest counseling, but we live in different countries. Where he lives, the internet connection is so poor when trying to do video calls. After the fight last night, I did send a text that I need a few days to think about how I want to proceed with the relationship. I also sent him a video that describes a technique where you repeat back what the other person said to their satisfaction before you can talk, and asked if he’d be willing to try. I’ll see how he responds, but it seems like he’s finding it easier and easier as the relationship progresses to say hurtful things and disregard my feelings. I’m the beginning of the relationship, he used to interrupt a lot, but he’d always excuse it that he had a thought and couldn’t remember it long enough for me to finish talking. But he swears now he can remember my exact words of something I said a month ago.

I have so many questions for Dr. Jordan when I watch his videos. He's absolutely brilliant. He nails it when he says it's about telling the truth. We're all blind to some extent when it comes to owning the truth about our own shortcomings. And you need to be able to do that before you can have any successful long term relationship. I have not succeeded yet. I usually figure it out, but it's years after the fact.
