Jordan Peterson is joined by Jonathan Pageau and Gregg Hurwitz, who confronted him on dead naming Elliot Page and Peterson’s Sports Illustrator comments which Peterson called incautious. The Majority Report crew discusses Peterson’s disturbing comments in which he tries to justify why it is wrong for an individual to transition as he finds it “disruptive” to society.

This is the regressive, right wing party line on this: transgenderism is destabilizing the country! No. The far right sees the writing on the wall. More Americans than ever before have no religious affiliation whatsoever. Not only do more Americans not agree with or believe in the fundamentalist theology of Christian birthright male headship, but they aren't living according to that worldview. More men are single. Single women continue to lead the nation in first-time home ownership. The nation isn't destabilized. Women don't have to get married, and largely resist the idea that they ought to submit to every single man because he's a man. And now transgender people are proving that a cocktail of hormones, surgery and practice can make gender truly a series of performances and aesthetics. Regressive conservative men and Christofascists know there is no way for them to stay on top just by being born with testicles and a penis. So they're doing everything they can to shove women and men back into the old boxes.

Such a devastating point. And one which any person with a modicum of self-awareness and respect for themselves would take as a helpful and honest, if not blunt cue that it was time for them to _peace the f#%k out_ of the public eye, take a huge step back and a very long break from social media (including by logging out and/or uninstalling if necessary), and just do whatever they needed to do to start working on an extensive deep dive (and this DOESN'T NEED TO BE ALONE) into themselves and of *everything* they've got going on. Y'know, re-evaluate personal perspectives and priorities. Consider the healthiness or unhealthiness of any relationships they might have, not just including romantic involvement. Or in a nutshell, very simply, slowing down, taking a breath, and just asking themselves "what's up" (we can ignore that question in our minds for years upon years on end without ever stopping to think about what that answer might be, because it can be genuinely uncomfortable to take one's subconscious awareness of their situation, problems, unhappiness, etc. into their conscious mind, but no matter what it might be, something is always up with all of us). BECAUSE THE ALTERNATIVE is going to be really, REALLY ugly for them if they don't change, get help, whatever it might be, especially for a public figure, and DOUBLE ESPECIALLY for a public figure like Jordan Peterson. But Peterson isn't a man with even that minute quantity of self-awareness and self-respect, let alone any freaking _wisdom_ lol. We can all see the signs with Peterson from a lightyear away, and people who disagree with everything he says are trying to warn him about the trajectory into madness, possibly addiction, and god knows what else which he's obviously on right now, but the man who exclaimed "I remember when pride used to be a sin" referring to the LGBTQ+ community is going to indisputably continue to live, or unfortunately die, by his own.

@@daniaallaf2032 i arrogantly assume you mean me :). The first transsurgery happened in 1930 in germany. The first known book about transsexuality was written in 1912 and part of the 20000 books from the institute of sexology nazis burned in 1933. The pink triangle is a marking Nazis used to signal that someone is a degenerate/untermensch that is grooming children, raping destroying the country (everything sex related that is not man-impragnates-woman basically). One of petersons first videos on Shapibos site was about not being able to call someone by their name if they had a different name in the past and pretend he is a toddler and confused by the accustical version of non existing object-permanance. Peterson then claimed doctors who perform trans surgery are butchers comparible to the doctors experimenting in concentration camps (maybe he said jews explicitly but Nazis experimented on gay,trans, political oppenent, criminals, roma... Everybody with a different colored triangle in short) I dont remember if he claimed doctors perform gender affirming surgery on children, as that is a blatant lie. The only gender affirming surgery allowed under 18 in USA are mastectomys (breast reductions) at 16 and above. Everything under 18 other than those are psychiatric treatment and hormone blockers, in some cases hormone therapy (if Im not mistaken). Non of which are irreversable. Hormone blockers are in use for over 40 years and well tested btw. I hope that satisfies your interest. The chart for the nazi triangles are preserved and online. You can look them up. Even though you have to know, Nazis didnt believe transgenderism could exist and didnt had a term as far as Im aware other then "degenerate" but hey. They were Nazis.

This is the behavior of an abuser and gaslighter. When asked the question "Are trans people real?" and he replies "none of us truly know who we are" that is a classic abuser tactic when arguing. They philosophize and make the topic an abstraction at the right moment in an effort to try to confuse you. It's mentally abusive regardless of the context of which it's happening and regardless of whether they even realize that they are doing it.

@@charadreemurr8673 She was a conservative who, during the 70s argued against the Equal Rights Amendment using the same type of absurd interpretations of the law that Peterson is now using to oppose trans rights. For example, she said that equal rights for the sexes would lead to judges, in the case of custody battles, being forced to divide the children up between the parents. So in a family with 4 kids, two would have to go to the father and 2 to the mother, because that's what equality means. It's obviously ridiculous, but it convinced plenty of conservatives back then. Most people don't know who she is now, because her arguments are so contrived. The only people who do know who she is usually are well versed in the rightful struggles that she fought against. Everyone (nearly), knows who Martin Luther king Jr is. His arguments have stood the test of time. Peterson, imo, will go the way of Schlafly, being unknown to the general population because as rights advance his arguments will be proven to be as equally vacuous and reactionary.

Conservatism is like jazz: you need to listen to the things they don't say. Peterson says that you don't have the right to disrupt social norms; what he's not saying, but clearly believes, is that social norms are inherently good, presumably so long as they're norms that he values. Respect for and acceptance of transgender identity (and identities elsewhere on the spectrum) will, in time, become a cultural norm unto itself, if it's not already.

Not just that, but in many places trans people have to repeatedly see a licensed psychiatrist who specializes in gender identity issues, which is both not cheap and not readily available for most people. So it's not just wearing clothing and using a different name, you're also spending multiple hours being analyzed by someone with extensive training in psychology pertaining to gender and sexuality. Peterson is literally unqualified to see patients for transgender issues so his opinion on the matter, from a clinical psychology perspective, is completely worthless.

What you call, “mental gymnastics” is the act of a philosopher trying to get to the bottom of things - which isn’t easy. Fascists believe in top-down authority, which is the opposite of what JP believes in. If you listened to anything he’s said in good faith you would see that. And the belief of the Nazis, as Jordan has pointed out to EXHAUSTION, is something that he and right wingers like him have drawn a box around and publicly outlawed. The confidence that you have is astounding to me. How could someone criticize another when they know nothing about them, didn’t listen to them speak, didn’t internalize what they said if they did listen, and yet frame them as a “Nazi,” the most deplorable term that we Americans can use? And I don't think he's the type of guy who normally reads Sports Illustrated. If he was, he'd have railed against gymnast Aly Raisman due to the fact that she's a body positivity advocate. She's not fat, so you'd have to read the article to get that (I didn't, I got that from her autobiography), but she was definitely fat shamed by USA Gymnastics because of the fact that female gymnasts are held to unrealistic standards of being built like sylphs a lot of the time (though I think Simone Biles might be helping to change that trajectory by showing how powerful physiques can help there), and so Raisman knows you don't even have to actually be fat to be on the receiving end of fat shaming. And I know that women who work on building muscle intentionally get fat shamed as well, and I have also seen magazine articles where women are shown wearing dresses that emphasize a powerful look and get fat shamed for it (I suspect that depends partly on which body is "on trend", but the thing is, real bodies aren't a trend, they are what bodies look like). So Aly Raisman definitely has a point there. One that Jordan Peterson didn't refute with his intellectual fluff only because he doesn't actually read Sports Illustrated.

Hi MR team, i am a trans girl and i have to say, gender dysphoria absolutely is a mental disorder, however the consensus on it in the medical and psychiatric community is, overwhelming, that medical and social transition is the best treatment for that disorder currently available. Jordan Peterson, however, is not a physician, nor is he a practicing psychologist or even a professor anymore, so why anyone should even humor his thoughts on the matter is beyond me. There are few people in public life less deserving of a career of any kind than this man, he is tedious, he is profoundly unintelligent and the fact that he is considered, by a large swath of our society, to be a public intellectual is a horror.

And that's one of the issues, Peterson is not boundary pushing in any way, he's embarrassingly proven multiple times that he's not even well versed on the study/theory behind his own core talking points that he went viral for. Actually, the consensus is that therapy and guidance without surgical and hormonal intervention will see that individual mature into their biological sex and homosexuality in adult life. The best treatment currently available is not for a for profit billion dollar medical growth industry to prey on confused kids and usher them through irreversible medical procedures. The social contagion of gender dysphoria is being reported in record numbers, in large part due to the minimisation of the severity of this decision by its most vocal proponents, in turn, victimising impressionable young people further. Sweden, Finland, the UK, and Norway all have concluded through longitudinal studies that the risk-benefit ratio of youth gender transition ranges from unknown to unfavorable, and now recommend addressing psychiatric co-morbidities, not gender affirming care. To say jordan doesn't deserve a career because he is aware of this fundamental reality and concerned with protecting children is absurd. Children deserve to be protected from an ideologically corrupt society, and medical industry.

So, it seems like Jordan Peterson doesn't care about science at all. People have studied gender, and the effects of social transitioning, the impact of hormones, the impact of surgery. Social transitioning has always existed through human history. But, even these medical interventions are not new and mysterious. Lots of people have done it, and it has received TONS maybe even too much scrutiny. And the bottom line in study after study is that it just works. But, there are other benefits to being a trans accepting society that we don't discuss as often, and that's the impact on people who aren't trans. Think of all the anxiety and self-hate that's tied to failing to fit perfectly within your assigned gender roll. Everyone feels this a little, some of us feel it a lot. In a world where trans people, including non-binary trans people are just part of the landscape that anxiety is suddenly very small. I think this is what really scares people like Peterson about trans acceptance. Peterson thinks that it's healthy to beat yourself up for failing to be "enough of a man" -- he thinks there's some value in little girls growing up with bulimia and anorexia for fear of being worthless. If all of those pathologies are exposed as artificial what will keep the swimsuit models thin? What will keep the boys tough? After all he grew up with all these things and cannot imagine a world without them. Or he imagines that such a world is one without borders, or standards. Which of course it isn't. The creativity and mental discipline that is wasted on conforming to gender roles will be applied to other projects. That could be scientific exploration, artistic creation, or simply taking good care of the elderly in your community. There is no inherent virtue in the suffering. And we have hard evidence that it's unproductive. Show me a improving purpose and I'll change my mind.

3 Things: 1. It's clearly wrong to inflict prejudice/discrimination on someone who's already transitioned even if, for arguments sake, we assume that it was wrong for them to do so--full castration is obviously an excessive punishment for any offense. 2. The surgery involved in transitioning makes it very hard to believe that any cultural trend could convert anyone to transgenderism. 3. A point that needs to be made here is that people w/mental illness also constitute a wrongly marginalized group that deserves to be free from prejudice and discrimination.

I wonder if Jordan Peterson would be willing to take a sociopathy test on camera. Like, tell him that it's a test to see how alpha he is, or something, then just publicly try and figure out whether he is capable of caring if he harms others, or even believes that other people have rights and feelings beyond what is convenient for him.
@ivandafoe5451

In many ways this is what Peterson is already unwittingly doing in front of the cameras. In his many appearances like this, he thinks he is imparting some form of wisdom to his followers. But many of us see him instead as actually revealing his personal struggles with his pathological mental health issues. It seems he can't stop himself from doing this, because he is clearly now completely addicted to the attention and the "high life" of being a celebrity.

Adding onto the statement about being trans for any Jordan Peterson watchers. It's definitely not something we can just "go and do." It takes so much confidence to tell people, let alone openly go and walk around even a few minutes as your actual gender identity. I struggle with even just wearing simple femme clothing at work even though everyone is aware, I feel as though I'm still being stared at. And yeah, I WISH I had the confidence that Elliot Page does, because that's awesome.

This idea of trendy trans baffles me. Who would want to transition and go through all that time, effort, and hardship, in a society that generally victimizes, others, hates on, and commits violence on trans people? No one is dealing with all of that just to be trendy or cool, especially knowing it's not like they can just snap their fingers and go back to how they were. The idea that there are many, if any people doing this to be cool or trendy is utterly absurd when you think about it. The process is so long and painful just to be hated on and attacked.
