Well, several things: 1. Do well in incoming classes, design a schedule that is conducive to this goal. 2. I used a loophole my school allows to drop some classes I did poorly in off my record completely, because I changed majors a while back & they no longer applied to me. 3. I rigged up my degree so that I'm doing a senior thesis instead of traditional major electives so I have a chance at getting published if I do good enough work (see step 1 for work ethic).

Around an hour in he says something about social work being a job that hammers people into the ground, and then a few minutes later he goes onto mention the PsyD degree. Well, over the course of the first year of my masters of social work program, I realized my supervisors and those working in the field, and even a lot of my classmates, were very unhappy people burning it at both ends in their work lives. That partially contributed to the decision to apply to doctoral programs. He’s also right about not choosing where you go to graduate school. I got into 1 of the 8 PsyD programs I applied to. Learn Motivational Interviewing. Try to get hired anytime after your BA in a psych hospital for a time if you want to be able to do quick assessments and see the front lines of mental health- emergency psych eval is quick, plus in a medical setting. It pays ok but you gotta have a Masters so you want to earn good money for your investments of time, etc. A physical therapist helps people too. LMFT is too limited. Look up the careers on US News and World Reports Top Careers for links to schools, career outlooks etc Never forget- it’s the clients issue. You’re responsible for helping, not solving. Best wished

I wonder where Shelly Parson is these days, and if those students ever ended up speaking with her. Great lecture! Super useful even just to understand that there is a distinction between being an academic clinical psychologist and going more directly to the practicing side of things through a PsyD which sounds difficult, but nothing compared to the academic route.

At 21:17, he says that you should just go into business if you’re after status. What does that mean? Does he mean to open up a practice or consult organizations once the Ph.D is obtained or to not get a Ph.D at all?
@izzyayoubi63822 жыл бұрын
He’s referring to setting up a private practice.

Psychologists make a pretty good income. Many students want to be one because of it. Peterson is recommending students to just go to business school where they are more likely to make a higher income instead of going through the long and treacherous length of a clinical psychology Ph.D for the students who are in it for money.

Although your opinion seems like a rational way to think, the way I see this is that it's actually detrimental to the society to have large disparities between social groups. I don't want to elaborate on this because it seems obvious to me that a society should support low end of population in as many areas as possible in order to maintain the social equilibrium, using means other than brute force. So in case you don't want to have a lot of people around you that are hungry, and hungry people can be problematic in many ways, you should consider a way of supporting them so that your own life circumstances become better. Social support is not really altruistic when seen that way, it's actually very selfish. Same applies to universities, and almost any other area of social interaction.

Im not that capable of emotional support but Im fascinated by the human mind and philosophical questions. I like to analyze and solve complex problems; being of use. Im aspiring to be clinical psychologist so it is a relief to hear one must be detached from the patient since that comes for me naturally. Is it normal to study psychology but not particularly LOVE people lol
@EasierSaidwithDito6 жыл бұрын
uniikkiz I’d suggest you not become a clinician if you’re that apathetic about people lmao. You could still do something in psychology. A good clinician is detached from client suffering in that they’re not necessarily a friend. A big part of the job is emotional mirroring and that’s easier if you genuinely feel with the client
@TheDreamStar956 жыл бұрын
I don't think you need to get emotional to provide emotional support. As long as you can LISTEN to them and actually take their problems SERIOUSLY, the client will find levity in being able the process things verbally (something they may not be able to do with anyone they know). Providing an alternative way of looking at a problem or helping them to take a large problem and break it down into smaller problems can go a long way towards clients overcoming emotionally difficult issues. These things don't require you to get emotional. Clients aren't looking for pity parties, they're looking for solutions that will make their life better than it is now. It's especially important to be able to build TRUST with the client, which means being friendly, being gentle, and being patient. Being patient includes watching clients make very slow progress, potentially across many years. As long as don't get fed up or irritated by clients (or at least control it) and can build trust with them, you should be fine.

Thank you for the replies. Especially I found Mortimer Mages comment very informative and helpful. I am not in no way blind to peoples feelings and I do like to help people(paradoxical isn't it). Damn, I've been listening to Dr. Peterson for years but still, I'm 32, I haven't solved the most important issue in my life: WHAT AM I? Living in Belarus, a dictatorship aggressive regime, being married twice with two kids, I found myself in misery and despair cause I haven't found MY PLACE and MY JOB. I've been an English teacher for 8 years so far and so sick and tired of it, never liked it but took it up just to get some education and have something to eat...been struggling through self-studying Programming, understanding that it's unreal to beat it with 0 free time and lack of money, so completely lost that I've stopped even believing that such a person as Dr. Peterson could help me. I wish I'd heared his lectures when I was 15. To understand what's really important and at least to try to find my field before starting to chase women...

I also want to teach psychology as a professor as I also love teaching. Can you PLEASE guide me how to move forward! Any help would be appreciated!

You can take the necessary prerequisites for a Psy.D program. With a Psy.D, it is much more holistic on how well you did on your classes / extra curricular participation during undergrad rather than research experience. Once you take those prerequisites, you can start asking your psychology professors (form good relationships with them) for letters of recommendation. Boom. 5 years time you’ll be a Doctor of Clinical Psychology!
